Sprains, concussions, and tears. These are all common injuries that could happen while playing middle/high school sports. According to Stanford Medicine, in Children's health, more than 3.5 million injuries each year are caused by sports. The main reason why middle/high school athletes are injured is because they feel obligated to play sports competitively in America to feel accepted. Middle school/ high school aged students should not have to play a sport competitively to feel accepted in America as a result of sports not being played for the fun of it anymore, sports are mentally and physically draining, along with athletes may get too competitive in sports at a young age

They may think that playing a sport is necessary in middle/high school because it is a part of American culture, along with helping build social skills. In the article “Play More Than One Youth Sport Better Mental Health”, Dr.Jamie Pardini states, “As well, when kids play different sports, they are exposed to different peer groups in activities that require different types of teamwork and collaboration- skills that transfer well into adulthood.” The problem with the argument is that they say sports are good for kids to play so they experience different peer groups, but they don’t tell what could all come with that. They also don’t mention that other activities, like clubs, could help children be exposed to many different peer groups. In closing, students in middle and high school should not be held up to the sport standards in America. Playing sports competitively at a young age can take the love out of the game. Competitive sports can be mentally and physically draining to the body because they are not fully devolved yet. The last reason that sports aren’t the best thing in America, is that sports cause violence, and being exposed to this at a young age can impact and stay with you into adulthood. The overall (i.e., practice and competition) injury rate in all sports combined was 2.44 injuries per 1,000 athlete exposures (Table). Football had the highest injury rate (4.36 injuries per 1,000 athlete exposures) followed by wrestling (2.50), boys ' (2.43) and girls ' (2.36) soccer, and girls ' basketball (2.01). Boys ' basketball, volleyball, baseball, and softball each had injury rates of less than 2.0 injuries per 1,000 athlete exposures. In each sport, the injury rate was higher in competition than practice settings.
Sports have been a part of America for a long time. Long enough that they are big part of American’s culture. When the word “sports” is mentioned to any American, the first thing that comes to mind are sports at a professional level, mean while forgetting the National Collegiate Athletic Association(NCAA) athletes. While there may be some negatives to competitive sports, that’s just life, and to add on to that; there are plenty of benefits which are sure to override to media’s facts.
