Throughout the history, gamers are generally thought of as a dumb, anti-social person, but recently researchers have discovered that video games could make you smarter than the average person. One person could say that video games distract from the academic goals and ultimately disrupt a person’s grades for school. On the other hand, one could believe that playing video games could actually improve social behavior, provide technical skills, increase one’s strategic skills, and improve critical thinking skills in everyday situations. Maybe catching Pokemon and shooting zombies could be more beneficial than just a recreational activity for free time. One reason that video games can improve one's academic qualities is that they can make a person more sociable, increase communication abilities, and improve interpersonal skills with others. In James Paul Gee’s article “Games, Not Schools, Are Teaching Kids to Think”, he argues that video games are better at teaching kids cognitive abilities such as problem solving and micromanagement of tasks than schools and teachers. He claims that traditional classroom learning has shifted to “mechanical instruction methods that rely on line-by-line scripting for teachers and endless multiple-choice testing” (Gee, 566) rather than teaching children HOW to learn. He provides examples of how video games provide young gamers with the opportunity to achieve new learning concepts and skill sets. Mr. Gee gives very little in evidence that schools are not teaching children how to learn.
World War Video Games In Steven Johnson ’s essay “Games” (2005), he constructs his argument by saying that playing video games is no better or worse than reading, it is simply exercising different skills. What kept my interest in this short essay was the fresh take on the subject on how video games effect young adults. He addresses the audience knowing they will agree with his contrast of the two subjects or take it to be completely true. His explanation of it allows him to reach even the biased of readers to accept the rest of his argument.
In school, lectures to young students can be very boring and cause them to get side track and not pay attention which could be harmful to their grade, but what if you put the teaching into a video game? Researches claimed that coordination and spatial cognition, critical thinking, teamwork and creativity are enhanced when playing video games like Tetris, puzzle games, and such (Anderson & Warburton, 2012). With the release of Wii and arcade games like Dance Dance Revolution and Just dance, the idea that video games are not good for the health was negated. They are called exergames or interactive games that required body movements which promote exercise that contribute to the physical fitness (Prot, Anderson, Gentile, Brown, & Swing, 2014). There are also games meant for teaching and learning. They are called educational games which target specific field or learning and are also used in higher education and are called simulation/simulator games.
Are video-games a sport? In recent years a pressing topic that has surfaced, especially among parents to children involved in such activities. I am of the belief that they are as real of a sport as football and hockey and that professional gamers should for all intents and purposes be considered athletes. Violet video games have been blamed for several young people killing students at school. Young people are not able to think like adults so they are easy to follow the wrong way of doing things like they see in video games. Other countries do not have the same problems because their laws are strict or their customs for punishing wrong doing is much harder. Thus children who play more violent and dangerous video games are more likely to have increased of aggressive thoughts, behavior, feelings and decreased in prosocial helping. For the repeated cases of violence in video games, the child is in control of the violence and experiences in his own eye by killing, kicking, stabbing and shooting in games.
