Hamlet shows his love for Ophelia in many different ways throughout the play. the first way Hamlet shows his love towards Ophelia is with …show more content…
In Act 5 scene 1, page 12 Hamlet says “ I loved Ophelia. Forty thousand brothers could not with all their quantity of love make up my sum. What wilt thou do for her.” In this case, the hamlet has proven to everyone that he is in love with Ophelia, with him saying that if you added a forty thousand brothers their love couldn't match mine. With this Hamlet is finally coming out and finally showing his love for Ophelia. All along hamlet did love Ophelia but he was just afraid to show that he did love her because he was afraid that he would get hurt. On the other hand, Hamlet could have also hidden his love to protect Ophelia from getting hurt from Claudius for the revenge they both wanted on each other. For instance when hamlet first tell Ophelia that he did love her but then changes with saying that he didn't he loved her because he knew that their conversation was being
In Act 1 scene 3 he tells her that “For Hamlet, and the trifling of his favor, Hold it a fashion and a toy in blood, A violet in the youth of primy nature, Forward, not permanent.” He is saying that what their experiencing is essentially puppy love and it will not last long because he is a prince and can’t control who he marries. She tells him she’ll remember his words. Then when she tells her father about their exchange, he states the same thing and goes a tad bit further. Ophelia tells her father that Hamlet has said that he wanted to marry her “And hath given countenance to his speech, my lord, With almost all the holy vows of heaven.”
Meanwhile, he receives support from many citizens while Hamlet just has about one or two loyal people who try to help him. The actions of Laertes reveal that he is calm because he doesn’t kill Claudius right away even though he hears many rumors before on the way to Denmark. Another similar point between these two people is that they both love Ophelia, but in different ways. Laertes loves Ophelia as a brother, so he gives many suggestions to Ophelia when he knows that Hamlet shows affection toward Ophelia; he keeps telling her that Hamlet is a young prince that his affection is not permanently, which alludes that he is really concerned about the future if Ophelia agrees to be with Hamlet. Hamlet loves Ophelia as a man since he writes a long letter showing his feelings toward Ophelia.
Hamlet openly states that he loved Ophelia not that he loves her or if they could get back together “I did love you once.” ( 3.1, 125) However, he never stated it or tried to show
These characteristics of Hamlet’s can be shown through him expressing, “you should not have believed me: for virtue cannot so inoculate our old stock but we shall relish of it: I loved you not.” (3.1.117-119). Hamlet explains this to his love interest Ophelia, whose relationship with Hamlet is quick to begin and end. Hamlet’s mass deception throughout the play of “pretending to be mad” hurts many relationships. Through this quote, Hamlet tells Ophelia that he never loved her, however through prior quotes, this is hard to believe.
All of Hamlet’s comments towards Ophelia suggest that he feels betrayed. Hamlet and Ophelia showed each other true love but both were mad after their fathers’ deaths. Hamlet was acting mad to have revenge while Ophelia was truly mad. During Ophelia’s funeral, Hamlet stated “I loved Ophelia; forty thousand brothers could not with all their quantity of love make up my sum”, expressing his true feelings towards her. Ophelia’s betrayal and lies to Hamlet in Act 3 deeply hurt his feelings causing Hamlet to hate
The type of love felt by Hamlet and Laertes is quite different. Ophelia is the sister of Laertes and therefore he has brotherly love for her. Before leaving Denmark, Laertes advises against relations with Hamlet. He remarks on the love Hamlet has for Ophelia as being “The perfume and suppliance of a minute,/ No more.” (I, iii, 9-10)
Hamlet views Ophelia as a naive and ignorant girl who is nothing but Polonius and Claudius's puppet. This was revealed when Hamlet said "God has given you one face and you make yourself another. . You jig and amble, and you lisp, you nickname God's creatures and make your wantonness your ignorance." (III, i, 143-146) In this quote Hamlet knows that Ophelia is spying on him for Polonius and Claudius.
Ophelia is grieving the loss of her father after Hamlet kills him. Ophelia doesn't know that Hamlet killed her father. But Ophelia has gone mad from learning about her father's death. Also, after Hamlet telling Ophelia that she needs to go to a nunnery, Ophelia is a little bit discouraged. She is discouraged because Hamlet had told her before that if Ophelia would sleep with him that they would get married.
In Act III Scene I, Hamlet approaches Ophelia and proceeds to confuse her with mixed messages. Hamlet goes to say “I did love you once”(3.1.116) and then later on contradicts this statement by saying “I loved you not” (3.1.120). Opehlia now feels like “the most deject and wretched” (3.1. 156) as she hears daggers from Hamlet. This was the start of Ophelia's madness. With Hamlet's emotional abuse of Ophelia, he shows no regard to how she’ll react to his words.
Love is Toxic “ But never doubt that I love” (2.2.119). Throughout the play The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare, Hamlet professes much love to his girlfriend Ophelia. However he begins to mistreat her through his antic dispositions caused by revenge on his uncle, King Claudius, who killed his father.
In Act III, scene i of The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare, readers will come upon Ophelia’s soliloquy. After Rosencrantz and Guildenstern have failed to find a reason as to why Hamlet is acting in a peculiar and mad way, Claudius is persuaded by Polonius that the reason for Hamlet’s madness is the broken romance between Hamlet and Ophelia. To prove this, Claudius and Polonius plan to spy on Ophelia’s meeting with Hamlet. During their conversation, Hamlet denies ever having loved her and curses her. Ophelia is left fretting over his sanity.
Ophelia is in love with Hamlet but her family thinks he isn't right for her. In the beginning Laertes is telling Ophelia that she shouldn't see Hamlet anymore. She told him that she was going to keep seeing him besides for what he is saying. A few minutes later her dad, Polonius, joins their conversation and says some things about hamlet that surprises her, so she listens to him and agreed not to see him anymore. Even though what he was saying surprised her, she still believed Hamlet did love her once.
Hamlet surely thought that his mother Gertrude dearly loved his father Old King Hamlet, now he may feel like his mother never loved his father. This may result in why he feels like he may not love Ophelia. We are also aware that Hamlet has trouble with his own happiness and this probably reflects on the way we feels towards people mostly women. Hamlet thinks that the reason real love does not exist is because of the female gender. Hamlet blames both his mother Gertrude and Ophelia for portraying men as monsters.
Despite all the reasons throughout the play to show that Hamlet did not in fact love Ophelia, I believe he may have loved her in some sense. Hamlet may or may not have been hopelessly in love with Ophelia but he definitely felt some sort of love for her. Evidence of his love for her is shown massively by how he responds to learning of about her unfortunate death. In Act V, it is revealed that Ophelia had drowned herself, later in the act, Hamlet discovers the truth.
(43) how can Hamlet accept this when he is still in mourn of his father and throw away the love that she shows to his father while they are still together. Moreover, his relationship with Ophelia is argumentative about whether Hamlet loved Ophelia until she is dead where McGinn also expresses “As with his varying behavior towards Ophelia. Does he love her or not? There is really no saying. Then there is a question of his madness.”
