Taxes! After the French and Indian War, the British government needed money to pay for the cost of protecting the colonists from the French and Indians. The British government approved several taxes including the Stamp and Tea Acts to help pay for the costs of the war. The colonists were expected to pay these taxes. The Stamp Act The Stamp Act was a tax placed on the American colonies by the British in 1765. It said they had to pay a tax on all sorts of printed materials such as newspapers, magazines and legal documents. It was called the Stamp Act because the colonies were supposed to buy paper from Britain. The items bought had to have an official stamp on it that showed they had paid the tax. This surprised the British government. The colonists even threatened tax collects forcing them to quit their jobs or to even leave the colonies. Protests spread into the streets and groups like the Sons of Liberty encouraged the colonists to boycott British products. These boycotts soon hurt British businesses in the colonies. The British government was forced to repeal the Stamp Act. Even though it was repealed, the British government still needed revenue to pay the debt of the war and would soon tax the colonists again. The Tea Act In 1773, the British government passed another tax. This time tea was taxed. The tax actually made the tea cheaper in the colonies. The colonists were still not represented in the British government and didn’t have a say on how the taxes could be done. The colonists wanted the tea returned to England, but it wasn’t and they decided to protest the unfair tax. The Boston Tea Party Was it a big, fun party with tea? Not really. Nobody was drinking the tea. It was a protest by the Sons of Liberty who dressed as Native Americans who boarded 3 tea ships and threw the ships’ tea cargo into Boston Harbor. The costumes didn’t fool anyone and the British knew it was the colonists who had destroyed the
Almost all of the taxes were rescind, but the tax on tea was kept. Boston Massacre:
And really important people thought it was wrong. The tea company lost $12,000 dollars $17,500,000 in today 's money. The Boston Tea Party made the British furios. After the act the british stopped trading into boston immediately. They said it was treason because they destroyed private property.
The actual tea tax actually meant only political control of the Americans by the British, simply because the price of the tea would not change drastically. The tea was one of the most important commodities during the colonial times and the British believed that the Americans would live with the new tax and accept the British
However, Parliment saw a need to help out the British East India Company, who at the time had the largest surplus of tea on hand and needed help selling it. Parliment did not view this as a punishment to their fellow countrymen in America but as a way increasing revenue to help the British East India Company which in turn would have been beneficial to all involved [3]. Another reason colonists did not approve of the Tea Act is that the Townshend Revenue Act tea tax remained in place. This tax was one of the taxes that insulted the colonists. Since the new Tea Act began the sale of tea by representatives of the British East India Company directly to the American colonies, colonial merchants felt the act illegally granted a monopoly to the British East India Company.
The Stamp Act caused many colonial family 's to not be able to afford the tools and supplies that they needed to thus impact their lives greatly and caused them to be very angry. The “Stamp Act” made it very hard for a lot of the American colonists to be able to afford many of the essentials
Wealthy colonial families, mostly reacted writing angry letters or threatening anonymous letters to the British. Colonist is insulting their majesty. Families saying the Stamp Act was unfair and unconstitutional. People who were protesting made a new secret organization the Sons of Liberty. New secret organizations often turned violent and massacres became involved.
However, in 1773, the East India Company noticed that there was an overproduction of tea and its prices surely would decline (“The Third Imperial Crisis”). Tea was one of the, if not the, most valuable asset to many members in Parliament. Britain was forced to impose a new Tea tax on the colonists, which was aimed to keep the price of tea high. Even this act was reasonable in the eyes of the British, but to the colonists, this was just a British way of assuring dominance considering it was now for profit rather than to pay off debts. The response to the Tea Acts was the Boston Tea Party of 1773 (“The Third Imperial Crisis”).
The Boston Tea Party was a violent, courageous, and an eventful act that took place in 1997 because of constant disputes. It started to become a large issue when the British and English colonist constantly disagreed about the unfair taxes that were charged from the British. The colonists didn’t agree to the taxes at all the the government officials formed a plan. The British put such a hefty tax on the tea because they realized the demand was so outrageously high, and they could make a much larger profit off of it. Colonists did not want to pay the huge taxes, so they started buying/smuggling tea from East India, but the British wanted to have the colonists to buy tea from them because of the taxes.
This angered the colonists and they began to boycott purchasing taxed items. The stamp act was repealed on March 18, 1766. The British government began placing new taxes on the colonists such as the Sugar Act and the Currency
During the Colonial Era (1492-1763), colonists were justified in waging war against Great Britain; due to the inequitable Stamp Act, the insufferable British oppression, and the perceived tyranny of King George III, the king of Great Britain, however, the colonists were unjustified in some of their actions. In Colonial America, colonists were justified in waging war against Great Britain, because the Stamp Act was unfair and viewed as punishment. Because of the war, Britain had no other choice but to tax the colonists to pay for the debt. For example, according to document 2, the author states that the act was not only for trade but for “the single purpose of levying money.”
The French-Indian War of 1754-1763 resulted in political, ideological, and economic alterations within Britain and its American colonies. The French and Indian War, also referred to as The Seven Years War, began with British and French conflicts across the Ohio River Valley, as both nations wanted to claim the land for themselves. The first blood of the French-Indian War began with multiple British failures, including Washington’s dreadful defeat at Fort Necessity and General Braddock’s failed attempt at conquering Fort Duquesne, in which he died along with two-thirds of his army (Document C). The British would, however, gain momentum in 1759 with multiple victories, including their most significant triumph, Quebec.
On December 16 1773 the Boston tea party happened. The Boston Tea Party was where British Colonist dumped 45 tons of tea into the Boston Harbor to protest against the British Parliament's Tea Act of 1773. The colonist were unjustified in doing this, the colonist polluted the water that they fish in, they wasted money, and the British didn’t do that much for the colonist to do that. Some may say that the colonist did this because of the Boston Massacre but, that happened 2 years early, if it was really that big of a deal they would of done it sooner.
and they too were attacked so they had to fire into the mob. Parliament passed the Tea Act, which gave the British East Indians company a complete monopoly of the American tea business meaning the colonists could only buy tea from this company. The colonists opposed this law even though it lowered the price of tea. They viewed the tea Act as merely another example
In 1765 March 22, The Stamp Act began. It was when American colonists were taxed on any kind of paper product. Such as ship’s paper, legal documents, licenses, newspapers, other publications, and even playing cards were taxed. All of the money that was taxed was used to pay the costs of defending and protecting the American frontier near the Appalachians Mountains. Although this act was unpopular among the colonists.
The boston tea party occurred when colonist as a way of rebelion attack british by throwing the tea that they found in their ships. And some people wonder why they did that and historic events show that there were French Indian War before that make the colonists to have an economic crisis so they can pay for the products. And the unique product that haven’t tax was the tea.
