Essay On Atticus Being A Hero

It is not right for him to chose to handle this case this way. Atticus is wrong in this action and in many of the other actions he takes in Go Set a Watchman.

Though people are fond of Atticus himself, his decision to aim for Tom Robinson’s justice causes discomfort, “ ‘Lemme tell you somethin’ now, Billy’ a third said, ‘you know the court appointed him to defend this nigger.’ ‘Yeah, but Atticus aims to defend him. That’s what I don’t like about it” (186). The quote exposes that everyone understand the fact that he is assigned to the case but do not understand as to why he is so intent on proving a black man’s innocence. Since Atticus exceedingly expresses his thought on Tim’s innocence and involves so much of himself in the case with a black person, he obtains negative feedback and gets called a nigger-lover.

Atticus decides to take the case in defending a black person, something nobody in the town would have done. Most of the residents of Maycomb do not believe in equality and have hatred towards black people. If an African-American is charged for committing a crime, he is automatically believed to be guilty because of their skin color. Atticus says, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view” (39). To clarify, Atticus took the case because he believes there is a chance of Tom being innocent.

Every day in our lives, heroes are all around us. They may not be what society tells us is a hero, like Superman or Batman. They do not wear fancy costumes or have super powers. But these heroes change the lives of the people around them, for the better. It has become common today to fight for human equality. Yet in the meantime, the theme of racial discrimination could be seen in both To Kill A Mockingbird and Black Lives Matter, in ways such as marches but not limited to protesting. Though blacks argue that it is unfair for whites to shoot innocent blacks, and some whites contend that blacks also kill blacks, but both show that the debate over whether black lives matter has been growing in intensity. In To Kill A Mockingbird, the author agrees that black people should be treated equally.

Why did Atticus defend a black man? Justice and being given the chance of a fair trial. Atticus Finch believed that everyone, black or white should be given the chance, to be proven not guilty. Even though some people thought Atticus was wrong in defending Tom Robinson, Atticus knew it was right to defend Tom because he knew everyone deserved a fair trial.

In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus is a lawyer in Maycomb Alabama. He Has two kids, Scout and Jem. His wife died when Scout was only two years old. Atticus is not only respected by his children but his community. Atticus teaches his kids valuable lessons throughout the story.

They saw them as mistakes and was not afraid to fight to show that blacks were less in their minds. Although, Atticus did disagree he was shamed by others because he was supportive of a black man getting the same rights as a white man. Even Atticus’s family is getting grief from the case, “Grandma says it’s bad enough he lets you all run wild, but now he’s turned out a nigger- lover we’ll never be able to walk the streets of Maycomb again” (Lee, 110). It shows how many people stubborn enough to ignore the idea of Atticus supporting a black man that was highly most likely

I know three reasons, because he showed why after the court decision. The first one is, that Atticus felt like he could not accomplish the things he needed to move on to the next thing in his life. The second one is, that Atticus worked very hard to prove that Tom Robinson was not guilty and innocent. Even though he did prove a point that Tom was not guilty and the only reason why he is going to jail is because of him being black. The third one is, that Atticus felt like he does not mean enough to people for when he is doing the right thing.
