During reconstruction, African Americans wanted to be considered as “real men”, rather than inferior men. Even though African Americans were freedmen now, they were still not treated as equals to white men. African Americans were excluded from railway cars, omnibuses, stagecoaches, and steamboats entirely, or they were assigned to specific sections that they were secluded within. African Americans were permitted to vote, and some even held office. They were determined to exercise their rights as citizens, which they finally were granted, and became as involved as they could. Fourteen African Americans held seats in the House of Representatives, two in the Senate, and even some became Governor’s. Some men known as carpetbaggers, former men from the north whom decided to …show more content…
Organizations like these, detrimentally hurt the modernization of the South, leaving them in the dust ibn comparison to the north. The north believed the Southern Black men had to rely on their own resources, and not demand any further assistance from the north. The north got them their freedom, but for the most part didn’t want much to do with them after that. Whites in the south just saw them as a great big joke when they were holding office, or when they thought they had an impact on politics. This was the case because for an incredibly long amount of time blacks were made the inferior race, white men handicapped their growth and intelligence, making them simply into a labor force that couldn’t even think for themselves. African Americans are free now, but they are still fighting to become equals with the whites in society. The white men are backlashing the African Americans, trying to keep them under the whites, especially since they are the majority population in the south, the whites are fearful of the result in African American
Although slavery was declared over after the passing of the thirteenth amendment, African Americans were not being treated with the respect or equality they deserved. Socially, politically and economically, African American people were not being given equal opportunities as white people. They had certain laws directed at them, which held them back from being equal to their white peers. They also had certain requirements, making it difficult for many African Americans to participate in the opportunity to vote for government leaders. Although they were freed from slavery, there was still a long way to go for equality through America’s reconstruction plan.
The Civil War and the period of Reconstruction brought significant political, social, and economic changes to American society, and these effects continued into the 20th century. Post Civil War (After the Civil War – The period after the Civil War) - President Abraham Lincoln and Congress were determined to rebuild the nation. Lincoln wanted to restore the Union by readmitting the southern states that had seceded, as well as provide African Americans with more rights. Period of Conflict -
This led to continued to tensions between not only the north and south but also the blacks and the whites in America. According to The Unfinished Nation, the per capita income of African Americans increase from about one-quarter to about one-half of the per capita income of White citizens (365). Sadly certain
In the South, the blacks had not exactly won their freedom. Sure the Constitution was amended, but this didn 't mean they would get that kind of freedom. I can totally relate to the Blacks back in the day, how hard they had to go through because of some very evil people who think they just can control anything they want. Me as a human being and a nice person would never use someone against their will because I have a little of what they call power. The Blacks were force to work for farm owners for almost something that didn’t even exist, so I guess you can say they worked for free.
Ok after the war Mississippi abolished slavery but refused to ratify the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments, and in March 1867, under the Congressional plan of Reconstruction, it was organized with Arkansas into a military district commanded by Gen. E. O. C. Ord. After a lot of agitation, a sponsor for the Republican constitution guaranteeing basic rights to blacks was adopted in 1869. Mississippi was taken back in to the Union early in 1870 after ratifying the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments and meeting other Congressional requirements. While some of the republicans stayed in power the government was composed of new immigrants from some of the north they had African American and obedient Caucasians. In 1874 a man known by
Peter Schroeder Dr. Christopher Marshall Modern United States History 2/2/17 Writing Assignment 1: The African-American Experience with Reconstruction Reconstruction among the south refers to the point in time which the United States was attempting to establish a relationship between the union and the rebels. The Union had won the civil war, so the next step was to begin to mend the broken relationship between the north and the south. Though historians cannot agree on when it began, there is merit in saying that it started before the end of the Civil War. After victory, had been solidified for the Union, attention of President Lincoln turned towards reconstruction.
The American civil war led to the reunion of the South and the North. But, its consequences led the Republicans to take the lead of reconstructing what the war had destroyed especially in the South because it contained larger numbers of newly freed slaves. Just after the civil war, America entered into what was called as the reconstruction era. Reconstruction refers to when “the federal government established the terms on which rebellious Southern states would be integrated back into the Union” (Watts 246). As a further matter, it also meant “the process of helping the 4 million freed slaves after the civil war [to] make the transition to freedom” (DeFord and Schwarz 96).
Post Civil War, African Americans started to gain rights to gain rights, and soon gain rights equal to whites. While there were some people/things standing in their way (KKK, Black Codes), in the end they got what they needed; Equality. Many acts and laws were passed to aid the new rights now held by African Americans, as well as the numerous people willing to help. New Amendments were added to give African Americans rights after the war, all giving them some equal rights to whites. The first of the three added was the Thirteenth Amendment, it gave African Americans freedom from slave owners, and stated that no one could be kept as a slave in the U.S..
The African Americans were “free” but were still being treated like slaves. They were given rights but had them taken away and were working for very little pay which was unfair compared to how whites were working for more. The blacks couldn’t even own a house or even rent unless they worked for a white man. They couldn’t even work unless it was for some white person or former owner. This is why reconstruction in the south after the civil war was a big
The reconstruction period was a failure because African Americans, mainly males, were not treated with equality although the constitution said that the they were free and had the right to vote, be educated and had the right to liberty, life and the pursuit to happiness. Organizations, like the KKK, were created to harm freed slaves and their families. Laws were created such as the Black Codes restricting former slaves from their rights. African Americans endured a lot of violence over the years. “In Grayson, Texas, a white man and two friends murdered three former slaves because the wanted to ‘ thin the niggers out and drive them to their hole’”.
Racism’s Impact on Reconstruction While the issue of slavery evidently contributed to the divide that resulted in the American Civil War, it is debated whether prevailing ideals of racism caused the failure of the era following the war known as Reconstruction. With the abolishment of slavery, many of the southern states had to reassemble the social, economic, and political systems instilled in their societies. The Reconstruction Era was originally led by a radical republican government that pushed to raise taxes, establish coalition governments, and deprive former confederates of superiority they might have once held. However, during this time common views were obtained that the South could recover independently and that African Americans
Many Americans were concerned by the change that needed to happen for the people. The people were starting to stand up for what they believed in. With population increasing, things started to get out of control. Many political people held to much power over the people. People living in poverty were suffering more than they have been.
In the years of the Civil War, African Americans played an important role in contributing to the Union Army and the confederate army. A great deal of African American men volunteered to join the Union Army but only after they gained freedom did they participate in fighting the war. Besides the Union Army, there was the confederate army which consisted of slave labor whom were forced to aid the confederacy following their masters. Later in the war, the Confederacy ran short on men and were in need to supply soldiers, leaving no choice but to enlist the colored men. Not only were African American men impacted from the war, but African American women also served to supply and aid in the war.
They taught the white population that, it didn 't matter if a black person is free. Or the fact they might be educated or hardworking. They wanted to dehumanize the black image to a greater extent. So there won 't be any escape for any black person because their pride and spirits were
