Equine therapy can be traced back centuries and has been proven to have many benefits for people who suffer from a variety of problems. Therefore a well thought out facility is vital and can assist both the horses and people involved.

The use of horses for therapeutic reasons dates back as far as 460 BC yet has sustained itself as relevant and effective throughout history. A significant study to prove the therapeutic value of horses started in 1875 when a French neurologist, Chassaignac, discovered that a horse in motion helped to improve the balance, motion and muscle control of his patients. The horses allow the children to relax and have a personal experience with the animal. They help the child combat loneliness and create a calm environment that allows them to open up and let out their frustrations in a peaceful manner. Horses can detect stress, anxiety, and nervousness and will often react accordingly. When working with the animal, one needs to remain calm to keep it calm. This process of working in close proximity grants the full benefits of equine therapy and can aid both the horse and the child receiving treatment. Working with horses has also been proven to relieve tension, anxiety, and anger issues that a child may have. The effect of equine therapy however, goes far beyond children or neurological issues. Horses can also help teenagers and adults deal with emotional issues including stress, grief, or anger, as well as aid some to improve motor skills and allow for development of strength, balance, and muscular control. This type of therapy gives the person an opportunity to develop a bond and/or trust with the animal. This trust allows the horse to remain calm and be most beneficial. Horses can empower someone to build upon their own responsibility, self confidence, and self-respect. Working closely with such an animal lets the person feel as though they have achieved something.
