Emotions are like an infection in the play ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. An infection that spreads to the purest of characters and the most vile ones. Shakespeare writes beautiful and well-thought-out scenes about questioning people’s emotions and how irrational people can be the cause of chaos. Emotions run high throughout the play and envy, anger and devotion to love lead the characters to act irrationally and go against their better judgment.
Jealousy is an amazing example to start off the chaos inflicted by this emotion. To begin, envy runs rampant in Helena’s mind and clouds her priorities. When Helena hears Hermia and Lysander’s plan she exclaims, “If I have thanks, it is a dear expense” (1.1.249) Helena. This intense jealousy is the root

To start, Titania ‘falls in love’ with Bottom and that causes his friends to think he disappeared. Titania groans, “What angel wakes me from my flowering bed?” (3.1.118) Titania. With the love curse still in Titania’s eyes, she falls for Bottom. With Titania trapping him for such a long time, It leads to Bottom’s friends mourning him and actually thinking he got lost or died. Next, Lysander, just like Titania, ‘falls in love’ with Helena and it ruins Helena’s sparse confidence. Lysander having a revelation says, “Not Hermia but Helena I love” (2.2.113) Lysander. Lysander’s thinking leads to Helena thinking he is mocking her and she thinks she is the butt of a gigantic joke. She screams and yells at him which results in her running away with Lysander running after her. Finally, in the last scene of the play, the reader is shown the lengths to which a fictional story’s characters, Pyramus and Thisby, will go to be with each other with the excuse of love. The craftsmen star in the play shown for the lovers’ wedding celebration and it was frequently shown back in the day because it resembles undying love. Pyramus and Thisby were so clouded by their emotions for each other that they thought they could unite with each other in death. They did not take a step back to evaluate the situation and it results in them killing themselves. Shakespeare writes about the dangers of love and following your heart rather than your
Anderson Young Mrs. Paul Literature/Composition 9 Accelerated 4 May 2023 Romeo’s Tragic Flaw Love is a powerful and all-consuming emotion, capable of bringing people together then ripping them apart. No play captures this sentiment quite like Shakespeare’s famous tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, where we observe a timeless tale of young love, passion, and tragedy. The play’s impetuous character, Romeo, is often praised for his romantic nature and his boundless love for Juliet. However, his reckless and rash behaviors throughout the play ultimately lead to the young couple’s tragic fate.
In the play A Midsummer’s Night Dream by William Shakespeare, many of the characters relentlessly pursue their goals in the face of illogical decisions, and, while fictional items such as the “love-in-idleness” flower are used to explain the character’s sudden love for each other, the play does illustrate how love and ambition can lead to unforeseen consequences. For example, when Puck accidently anointed Lysander’s eyes with the “love-in-idleness” juice, he started a chain of events leading to Lysander and Demetrius fighting over Helena while Hermia is treated as though she is worthless. Moreover, at one point, Lysander and Demetrius even threatened to duel each other when Lysander awoke after being anointed with the flower 's juice and said, "Where is Demetrius? O, how fit a word is that vile name to perish on my sword" (61). This shows how the character’s love for certain other characters, and their ambition to pursue said love, can lead to the destruction of previous relationships and lead them to make dangerous decisions.
William Shakespeare's renowned tragedy, "Romeo and Juliet," delves into the depths of overwhelming passion and its consequences. Through the masterful use of the binaries of love and hate, Shakespeare illustrates how intense emotions can drive individuals to engage in impulsive and irrational behavior, ultimately leading to tragic outcomes. In this play, the characters' actions are fueled by an all-consuming passion that blinds them to reason and propels them towards fatal decisions. By analyzing Shakespeare's craft moves, particularly his word choices and use of imagery, we can gain insight into the destructive power of unbridled passion and its influence on the characters' choices. In this essay, we will explore how Shakespeare crafts the language and imagery in "Romeo and Juliet" to highlight the characters'
Ava Rodriguez Ms. Kitt/ Ms. Sanchez English IH Period 6 Mar 6 2023 The Depiction of Emotions in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet William Shakespeare, who is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language, once stated, “Never play with the feelings of others, because you may win the game but the risk is that you will surely lose the person for life time”. Shakespeare makes thorough points when speaking about how it is important to think about the risks that individuals will be taking when playing with emotions. Shakespeare also wrote the play, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, which is the text that this piece of writing will be focussing on. The play by Shakespeare is a timeless tale of love and tragedy.
(Page 1/ Paragraph 1, Line 18.) Their secret conversations through the crack in the wall emphasize the theme of forbidden love. Unfortunately, their fate is sealed when Thisbe mistakenly believes Pyramus to be dead, leading her to take her own life. Unlike Romeo and Juliet, the lovers in Pyramus and Thisbe never directly face each other while
In William Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream the circumstances surrounding love have been put into question, this occurs when a magical nectar is put in the eyes of three major characters, and changes their feelings towards the people in their lives. Titania, Lysander and Demetrius all have had the nectar put into their eyes, though Demetrius avoids having this done to him in act 2 scene 2 which is the scene that the focus of this paper will be looking at. Throughout the play, we focus largely on the love life of Helena, which unfortunately does not seem to exist. She is in love with Demetrius, whom does not care for her in the same way, he does not cherish her at all before he is under the influence of magic. Once Lysander declares
He gets control over Titania by putting a love potion on her eyes whilst she is sleeping. The first thing she sees she falls in love with. She falls in love with a donkey and realizes her mistakes and gives the boy to Oberon. Likewise, the play states: ¨I´ll watch Titania when she is asleep and drop liquor of
Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream may lead you to think controlling someone is easy, but this storyline could change your mind. For the duration of the play, the characters are constantly fighting for control, after a very difficult endeavor, characters finally gain dominance over each other. In the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare uses the characters Oberon and Titania to show how you can genuinely control someone’s actions by emotional manipulation and coercion. One way Oberon controls Titania with magic for emotional manipulation is when Oberon wants to make Titania fall in love with a creature for his own benefit.
The tone and the atmosphere of the play is cynical in a woe is me sort of way, The three main characters of the play, the sisters, are well educated and had the ability to pursue whatever they want to in life , but they instead of acting and pursue those dreams of going to Moscow someday , they just spend the entire play talking about it. They do not ever actually go to Moscow they just daydream about that eventual return. Chekhov makes there dreams just that, just dreams, and nothing else. If Chekhov were to have the main characters in the play achieve their dreams then the new reality would be boring. The strife that they have to go through is much more appealing than the easy more predictable route the play can go.
Various factors cause the lovers to run away together. Hermia and Lysander 's love causes them to leave Athens. While Egeus is trying to convince Hermia to marry Demetrius; Lysander objects, saying, "I am, my lord, as well deriv 'd as he, / As well possess 'd: My love is more than his . . . I am beloved of beauteous Hermia" (1.1.99-104).
In our scene, lines 42-179 of Act One, Scene One, the characters who try to force love upon others are seen antagonistically, while Hermia and Lysander, who strive for true, naturally occurring love, are seen as protagonists whose love should be defended. The overlying message of the play is that love should not and cannot be forced. Theseus, Egeus, and Demetrius use their power, both as nobles and men, to try and force Hermia into marrying Demetrius. Egeus, in an attempt to bully Hermia into marrying Demetrius says, ‘‘‘She is mine, and all my right of her I do estate unto Demetrius’’’ (1.1.97-98). He sees his power as Hermia’s father as a way to force her into a marriage that will benefit him.
With many of the different scenes throughout the play, the theme of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is that love is difficult. In the play when Hermia 's father tries to tear Hermia and Lysander
/ O, then, what graces in my love do dwell / That he hath turn'd a heaven unto a hell!'” which is a quote stated by Hermia; I think this quote is discussing what she think may happen to her if she follows her heart to marry Lysander she is unsure whether she will go to heaven or hell for the disobedient actions she has taken. So as you can see the love/hate triangle going on is very somewhat “Out of whack” There’s not much good coming out of how they feel about each other, definitely not a kind of relationship that I would enjoy getting deep into reading about, but I have to be honest this is a story filled with very eager and brave women who will go after what they want with no problem or scarce in their hearts(Sounds exactly like me)!
Helena sees Lysander and wakes him up and he then falls in love with her.
Titania is put to sleep, and while she is asleep oberon sneaks up and put the love potion on her eyelids and whispers the spell. Lysander and Hermia wonder upon Titania but they can not see her, as they stop to sleep for the night Oberson, also puts the love potion on Lysander eyelids as he mistakes him for Demetrius. Upon his awakening he falls in love with Titania as soon as he sees her as she runs from him as he chases her. Hermia wakes up and discovers she is by herself frightened that Lysander has disappeared she runs off as
