Emmett Louis Till was born July 25, 1941, in Chicago Illinois. He was born to working-class parents on the South Side of Chicago. At 14 years old, Till went on a trip to rural Mississippi to spend the summer with relatives. Till was known by his mother, Mamie Till, to be a jokester, but she warned him that white people in the South could react violently to behaviors that were tolerated in the North. On August 21, 1955, Till arrived in Money, Mississippi, and stayed with his great-uncle, Moses Wright, who was a sharecropper.

Emmett Louis Till, nicknamed Bobo, was born on July 25, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois. Till was raised by his single mother, Mamie Till, and never knew his father, due to the couple’s separation and his father’s untimely death by execution. At the age of 5, Emmett caught a severe case of polio but made a full recovery, leaving him with a somewhat noticeable stutter. Growing up, he spent the majority of his days taking care of the house while his mother worked long hours balancing two jobs. He attended the all-black school of McCosh Grammar School.

August 19, 1955 was a day that Mamie Till Mobley will never forget, it was the last day that she would ever see her son, Emmett Till, alive. Only 5 days later, he was in Mississippi visiting his uncle, Moses Wright, and cousins. Being from the north, Emmett was not used to the racist south, and he did not know what was and was not permitted. He and some of his friends went to Bryant’s Grocery and Meat Market, to buy drinks after working in the fields earlier that day. His mother was very fearful about what was going to go down because her and her family were African American. When Carolyn’s husband, Roy, herd, he got infuriated and decided to kidnap Emmett from his own bed with his friend Millam. First, they ragged him out of his bed and

Emmett Till is a fourteen year old African American boy. Emmett was a "handsome teenager, stout at 160 pounds and slightly shorter than many of his classmates. " He had "funny-looking, light colored eyes." Till lived in a segregated neighborhood, in a six bedroom apartment with his Mother. He attended McCosh Elementary school in Chicago.

Although there are doubts about who was involved in Emmett Till’s death, the only perpetrators that were tried in court were Roy Bryant, and J.W Milam (Anderson). August 28, 1955 was the day Till was kidnapped and murdered (Emmett Till Biography). Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam went in Mose Wright`s house and demanded the Chicago nigger (Linder).Till was wake up out of his sleep to be dragged to the back of a pickup truck (Linder). He was shot in the right ear, beat with a 45. Colt, and had a gin fan wrapped around his neck with barbed wire (Huie).

Emmett Louis Till was a black boy from Chicago. Till was just visiting his grand-uncle, Mose Wright, and his family in Money, Mississippi on August 14th, 1955. A whistle from Emmett Till to Carolyn Bryant, a high class white woman, was unwelcomed as he was walking out of Bryant’s grocery and meat market. A few days later, on August 28th, 1955, Emmett Till was taken from his grand-uncle’s home outside of Money, Mississippi by two white men- Carolyn’s husband, Roy, and his half-brother, J.W. Milam.

The Emmett Till case should be taught in 2018 as not just a murder that triggered the civil rights movement, but as a case that still reflects the injustices that African American men face in the American Justice system. Not only should Emmitt till’s murder reflect the injustices in America today, but retaught since new information has recently surfaced which shows a different side to the whole case. Emmett Till was murdered on August 28, 1955 in Money, Mississippi and found beaten and floating in the local river. Emmett Till was murdered by Carolyn Bryant’s husband Roy Bryant and her brother-in-law Milam Bryant.

Before he went to Money Mississippi , his mom warned him that there was a lot of racism in the south. During the visit Emmett went to a grocery store where he was reported for flirting with a white woman. His mother had thought him to whistle when he had big words, because he would stutter from recent polio, a disease back in the 80s.

The mid-1900s was not the best time for African-Americans, especially not for Emmett Till. Emmett Till was fourteen years old when he went from Chicago, Illinois to Money, Mississippi. Till was a wild boy who loved to joke around and pull pranks. He lived in a community in the North where there was segregation but nothing that compared to the South. This scared his mother who was not sure if Emmett was prepared to go.

Emmett Tills murder greatly impacted race relations in America and sparked a fire in many people to rise up against discrimination. The brutal murder of a young African American boy in Mississippi due to a suspected wolf whistle at a white woman is the tragic story of Emmett. Born and raised in Chicago Emmett had no familiarity with the antiquated ways of the South, his mother Mamie Till would warn him about such ways. Tills murder was impactful yet ambiguous in the eyes of some, specifically those in the South. And although what specifically happened during Emmett Till’s murder has been debated, the significance of Tills naiveness to Southern racial etiquette and the aftermath shows the connection between his murder and the emergent Civil

“Emmett Till and I were about the same age. A week after he was murdered . . . I stood on the corner with a gang of boys, looking at pictures of him in the black newspapers and magazines. In one, he was laughing and happy. In the other, his head was swollen and bashed in, his eyes bulging out of their sockets and his mouth twisted and broken.

Emmett Till was a loving, fun fourteen year old boy who grew up on the Southside of Chicago. During 1955, classrooms were segregated yet Till found a way to cope with the changes that was happening in the world. Looking forward to a visit with his cousins, Emmett was ecstatic and was not prepared for the level of segregation that would occur in Money, Mississippi when he arrived. Emmett was a big prankster, but his mother reminded him of his race and the differences that it caused. When Till arrived in Money, he joined in with his family and visited a local neighborhood store for a quick beverage.
