Famous Person Essay “I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat.” -Edgar Allan Poe. Edgar Allan Poe is famous in our history, because of his writings and literary contributions. Some of his contributions include, writing the first mystery story, creating detective fiction and becoming master of the short story. Edgar definitely deserves his place in history, because what would we do without mystery? Although Poe wrote and did amazing things others can think otherwise like how he married his young cousin, had an alcoholic and drug problem, and how he always wrote about death like he was obsessed with it. The first piece of evidence to show this isn’t true is, “For some of Poe’s more fantastic storylines, his narrators admit the use of opium, but one should carefully note that it is Poe’s narrators who use drugs, not Poe himself. Poe’s stories are often written in the first person.” (http://www.eapoe.org/). This is explaining how in Poe’s stories he would write in first person and the characters would consume the drug opium, other people also thought that, because of Poe’s wild imagination came from hallucinations from the drugs which was also false. The second piece of evidence is, “Had Poe the opium habit when I knew him, I should, both as a physician and a man of observation, have discovered it in his frequent visits to my rooms, my visits to his house, and our meetings elsewhere. I saw no signs of it.” (http://www.eapoe.org/). What this is explaining is from a doctor 's point of view he would have reported or tried to stop Edgars use of drugs but he say no signs of it at all. The last piece of evidence is, “It also seems likely that Poe’s father (David Poe, Jr.) and brother (Henry Poe) were hard-core drinkers.” (http://www.eapoe.org/ ). From this you can conclude that Poe might have just drunk, because his brother and dad were doing it so he followed in their footsteps not knowing any different. In conclusion Edgar Allan Poe does deserve his spot in history because he made many impacts to history. Even though people think otherwise, because his actions like marrying his cousin, Virginia, or how they thought he had a drug addiction, was an alcoholic or how he was “obsessed” with death. All of these thoughts against him being false he made lots of great contributions to history. Again some of his contributions are, his creation of the detective story, being master of the short story, mystery, and horror. Without all these things from Poe our world would be much different.
