Duality is a change of emotion within, seen through physical change, and can be many different personalities contained in one body. Duality can be found in anything, but in the case of literature and life we can see when there is a duality in someone's life it shows a positive and negative side of their personality. This is seen in my life when I’m calm and collected playing soccer versus when I’m frustrated. This is also seen in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde when Dr. Jekyll is collected and friendly versus when he is Mr. Hyde and has a more evil and impulsive personality. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the duality between Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde shows a difference between an evil personality versus a good personality within the body of Dr. Jekyll. One example of the personality change is evident when Dr. Jekyll cuts off Mr. Hyde and his friends notice once, “the dark influence of Mr. Hyde had been withdrawn, the doctor had returned to his old tasks and amities; a week ago, the prospect had smiled with every promise of a cheerful and an honoured age; and now in a moment, friendship, and peace of mind, and the whole tenor of his life were wrecked.” (Pg. 36-37) Dr. Jekyll was under the influence of a friend, Mr. Hyde which made his whole personality change, but once this figure was removed from his life he returned to his happy and friendly self. Then a sharp change occurred and everything went back to the way he acted when he was with Mr. Hyde, evil, dark, and disconnected. In Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde it was easy to point out the duality because it was a physical element. In The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, it was harder because some of the dualities were not physical objects while some were physical. Duality is the two sides of a concept.

When asked to explain how something has a dual nature, immediately passion comes to mind. Passion has a dual nature because when someone has a passion and uses that for good it can be motivation, but on the other hand someone can use passion negatively by turning that into obsession. Most of the time when people are describing themselves they tend to use passion as a characteristic. Typically, when someone uses this to describe themselves it is viewed as a great characteristic to have, maybe that shouldn’t always be assumed. Being passionate can be a great characteristic.

In the novel, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Robert Louis Stevenson explores the complexity of human nature. He uses characters and events in the novel to present his stance on the major theme: “man is not truly one, but truly two” (125). Branching from this major theme are many more specific views on the idea that human nature is divided into good and evil. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are two very different people who occupy the same body. Human beings struggle with good and evil and Stevenson goes to the extreme to to show this relationship.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde consists of reputation, good vs evil and damage control. In other words, Utterson tirelessly works to prevent his best friend Dr. Jekyll from being dragged into the horrid affairs of Mr. Hyde, and Dr. Jekyll goes through the greatest of lengths to prevent his Hyde identity from being discovered, in order to avoid anyone knowing of his somewhat questionable scientific work and morally despicable behavior. Much of the novel is based on the characters ' reputations, how they have to maintain a good public image, as they are upper class people. The novel takes place in Victorian England and the main characters are all male members of upper class London.

The whole story goes around Mr. Utterson - a decent lawyer - trying to find out what is wrong with his dear friend, Henry Jekyll, and what is his relationship with the devilish man, also known as Mr. Hyde. On the end of the story, the reader finds out that Mr. Hyde is Jekyll's evil side: the doctor was fascinated by the duality of human nature and decided to do some experiments to separate his two sides, the good one and the evil one. Henry Jekyll wanted to do things that he couldn't because of his reputation and social morals, therefore, the best and only way of doing what he really wanted to was to have another side that no one knew. On the other hand, he didn't know how evil his other side could be: Mr. Hyde was purely evil and Dr. Jekyll wasn't purely good.
