Doing Homework In High School

Not one teacher can tell them what to do or force them to do anything, it’s all brought upon them and they choices they make. Although, sometimes a little push and shove is what some of them need to success. There is a variety of all different kind of classes to choose from here taught at Garber. Counselors at Garber High meet with you often and ask how classes are going and they make sure they pick the right classes for them to better their future. It all matters in high school what they choose to do, and how to be 100% successful.

All our teachers do is prepare us for tests and not life skills. When we step out into the big world, we don’t even know how to do the little objectives in life such as paying bills. Schools should start teaching us the things that we actually use later in life and not useless

The current US educational system is far too outdated and inefficient for the youth (more specifically, students) of the 21st century. Since the days of the industrial revolution, youth have been taught, in essence, the same thing, over and over- to obey orders quickly, quietly and repetitively without truly learning the information that will supposedly "improve" their futures. Kids and teens alike rarely get the chance to truly learn something of their own accord; instead, the higher-ups (teachers, principals, school board, etc.), choose what kids and teens these days must know and what they are better off (in their opinion) not knowing. Why wouldn't you want all students to be given an equal opportunity to succeed? Some believe that school is strictly for learning academically so that they may be successful out of school. However, many students come from broken homes who hardly see their parents or their parents aren’t in there lives. Many kids who go to high school are homeless or have to juggle adult responsibilities at a younger age, and still try to be success in order to get the same results as kids who are more privileged. The idea of not including life skills class is also supported by the school district having to put in extra work to find new teachers, new classrooms, and new lesson plans.

Also, all students have different interests in what they want to do when they grow-up. The first reason why students should be able to choose their classes is that they will want to come to school more; because they would be more interested in the topics they choose rather than the “default” classes. This would be okay if they were learning but they didn’t like it, but we are both NOT liking school and NOT learning. And considering that when you google “school makes me want to” and the auto-fill is nothing but “kill myself”, “cut” and “throw up”, meaning that school is also depressing kids! The way kids are being taught, is a way that makes kids remember something for a week, throw it up on the test, losing all the information to make room for the new batch of knowledge. This is not genuine learning, because genuine learning means you keep the info, not just get rid of it after the test. Considering that the percent of depressed people is around 6.85% and the percent of depressed college kids is 36.4%, really proves my point.

According to the text Schools Should Leave No Elective Behind, Bob Balmer states, “More class choices would benefit students in preparing them for their ideal careers and providing smaller class sizes.” Kids should have the opportunity to discover what they want to do in life at an early age rather than high school, because in high school it’s almost time to go to college and pick a major but they didn’t have enough time to try any possibilities. If a girl doesn’t have the average amount out elective time then she isn’t going to be firm on what she could do for a living, and when it’s time for her to make an income she’s going to be clueless in what she wants to do. Everyone goes to school, everyone has homework. Homework has been a topic of interest for a very long time. Many students think that homework is not beneficial. However, without homework people wouldn’t remember what they learned in class. Homework gives kids the chance to prove what they have learned.

A class in the arts should be an elective and students should be able choose whether or not they want to take one. It would not be right to choose what a student wants to do because school is where a person can express themselves and develop their craft while they are young so they a job that they love to do and not a job that they are there for the paycheck. If students had the ability to create their own schedules based on what they feel like they are ready to learn they will learn how to plan their path on their own. Directing students and assigning them their classes is not an efficient way to build responsibility. The real world isn’t all planned out. If mandatory classes were eliminated and the path students take was more individualized students will learn how to plan and work on their own. Students are forced to learn in groups for cooperation, but jumping on a bandwagon isn’t always the best idea.
