Throughout history, especially recently, the question of whether gun control violates the 2nd Amendment has been a question which many people claim they know the answer to, but it may not be that transparent. I believe gun control is constitutional, and it deters crime and makes society safer, meaning I side with the pro-gun control ideas. Within the topic of gun control, there are many factors in which people must take into consideration when proposing an answer such as whether it deters crime, what the economic impact is, and what should be changed. NEW PARAGRAPH...Gun control can date way back, but what really made it controversial was the court case of Heller vs DC in 2008. The court case went up to the Supreme Court, where it was decided …show more content…
Given in 2014, there were 52,00 recorded shooting, yet only 1,600 were recorded as self-defense, this leads many people to the idea that self-defense is rarely used (The Truth). Backing [up] that idea up,[is the ______________that] for every criminal killed in self-defense, 34 civilians die(Ingraham). The pro-gun control side also believes concealed carry is not effective [for ________________________] . Concealed carry is when someone is carrying a gun in public, but it is hidden so no one knows. Many are against concealed carry because it would lead to an arms race. As said by Kelly Sampson, on behalf of the Brady Campaign, allowing concealed carry would force the criminals to get higher damage guns, which would lead to an unnecessary amount of guns. If criminals got higher grade weapons, it would mean more violent crimes and more deaths. Obama once said “There is a gun for roughly every man, woman, and child in America. So how can you, with a straight face, make the argument that more guns will make us safer?” and many people on the pro-gun control side stand by this. They trust the idea that countless guns in America do not make America safer or deter …show more content…
While a man from the NRA, Brian Calabrese, said self-defense is used in various ways, the thought of a panicked person with a gun during a crime is not beneficial. From my perspective, I don’t want to live in a society where the at any point in time, I should be ready to shoot a gun. The arms race which Kelly Sampson was talking about, also made me think about how different society would be if the arms race ensued. Most of society would have to adapt to the norm of owning a gun, which would force the criminals to get stronger and higher capacity firearms. In this hypothetical society, I believe there would be a much higher death and crime rate. The statistic if someone owns a firearm, they are 90% more likely to die of homicide, really stood out for me and made me realize while owning a gun might make one feel safe, it is actually detrimental to one’s safety(The
An article in the Patriot Talon states that the right-to-carry gun laws have been “linked to an increase in violent crime.” Now this shouldn’t be a surprise; the more cars you have on the street, the more likely there is to be an accident. The same goes for guns. However, unlike driving, carrying a gun is not a necessity and gun extremists in America don’t believe this to be true. An opinion article in The Daily Beast shows that not everyone thinks open carry is a bad thing.
A possible concern is threatening weapons that are used too often when a person is causing a crime. For example, crimes all over the world have steered to atrocious incidents caused by concealed guns. This implies that the use of guns is taken for granted all over the world. This means that concealed guns have been the cause of a numerous amount dangers popping up around the world. However, “Carrying a concealed handgun could help stop a public shooting spree.”
All of the items addressed in this essay come to show that not very many people use guns for self defense, and that the gun purchasing process needs to be harder for customers to acquire. There are multiple ways that the world can be a better place, and the first is to create a sense of safety, by making guns harder to get. If this essay still can’t get you on its side, keep in mind that a single bullet can end a close family member’s
On the pro side, people who are attacked can defend themselves, and people might assume those around them have guns and may be less likely to act violently. The cons of concealed carry are that it can lead to injuries by mistakes, and that it can lead to tragic endings to heated arguements. Although the cons sound bad, they are due to human error and anger and cannot be eradicated. The concerns that the Anti-CC side have are concerns that are not exclusive to concealed carry- they also apply to regular gun ownership. Someone who legally owns a gun and keeps it in his or her home can shoot his or her spouse in the midst of a heated arguement.
Gun Control Are you a person that has, or has ever had possession of a gun? People believe that the United States of America should have gun control. I do not believe that. I believe people should have the right to posses, and bear arms.
Some days crime rates are up and then the next they are down, what we do know is that America is becoming safer. In 2005, 11,346 persons were killed by firearm violence 477,040 persons were victims of a crime committed with a firearm, (National Institute of Justice). Surprisingly, a lot of gun violence in America is related to self defense. Between 1987 and 1990 it was found that guns were used in defense during a crime incident 64,615 times annually. This equates to two times out of 1,000 incidents (0.2%) that occurred in this time frame.
Complete gun control for rifles is irrational, unconstitutional and hard to implement. The restriction of rifles in the united states is irrational due to crime statistics from the FBI. The FBI homicide statistics state that in 2016 there were 11,004 firearm homicide but only 374 of those were performed with rifles vs the 7,105 performed handguns. These statistics show that the handguns were used in 64% of homicides vs rifles being used in 3% yet rifles get more negative news coverage. The fact of complete gun control for rifles is unconstitutional because the 2nd amendment is intended for the american people to be able to defend themselves from a tyrannical government.
stricter gun laws are not needed in the united states. One argument is , if guns were outlawed criminals would still find ways to arm themselves. Gun control laws won’t stop mass shootings. Most shootings are from criminals that want to kill people like gangs kill people because they don't give them the drugs.
“The first six months of 2017 America saw 174 mass shootings”, (where 4 or more people were killed), according to CQ researcher, a trusted database. These mass shootings killed innocent people that wouldn 't have died otherwise. More secure gun restrictions would have spared all these people their lives. Stricter gun control would equivalent in a lower death rate and less of a threat to your loved ones, as shown by other first world countries.
If it is illegal to own a gun, a criminal will not follow the law and he will have a gun. But regular citizens won’t, meaning that the criminal will be more drawn to steal or harm someone. Making guns illegal will only increase the crime rates in America, not decrease them.
Gun Control Gun control is a very controversial issue. There are always two sides to every issue. For every person that agrees with the right to carry a firearm, there is one that disagrees. The second amendment protects the right to own a gun. Many groups feel the amendment should be rewritten.
Guns are just a tool, like knives and hammers and it completely depends on the people on how they use it. People who support guns and arms say that the Second Amendment secures individual’s right to carry guns with them and that gun rights is needed for self-protection, and was intended for military to have peace and defend the country if needed (Spitzer, 70). Most of the Americans use guns as a source to protect themselves and they believe that gun ownership prevents crime. A study conducted on November 26, 2013 showed that bans on weapons did not significantly affect murder rates at the state level (Lane, 5). Moreover, even if the rules and regulations are executed on gun control, not all criminals obey the law.
Ninety one Americans are killed by guns, on an average day, proven by statistics. Henceforth, this is one of the many countless reasons why gun control should be enforced. Some may argue that a gun provides protection and safety, if in an emergency. My opinion based on the past and recent shooting, are that guns do more harm than good, and there are other weapons that can replace the “emergency” of a gun, an example of this would be a bat and/or a taser. In the US the top five areas that have the highest deaths by guns are Alaska, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Arkansas.
Furthermore, there can be incidents such as maybe a child getting a hold of the gun and accidentally shooting a family member, or even worse taking the gun to school and causing a tragedy such as the shooting that took place in Columbine High School, Colorado on April 20th, 1999, leaving behind fifteen dead bodies and fifteen mourning families. According to Eliot Spitzer from OXNEWS, “Yes, people pull the trigger - but guns are the instrument of death. Gun control is necessary, and delay means more death and horror.” Just like everything else, being able to own arms comes with its pros and cons. There is definitely a chance of crime, but are we willing to risk it in order to be able to protect ourselves from not only other citizens, but the government as well?
Encouraging every citizen to own a gun can deter crimes to extremely low levels. An example of this Kennesaw, GA. Every head of the household in Kennesaw is required to own a gun by a law passed in 1982 (Code of Ordinances, Kennesaw, Georgia). There had only been one murder from the years of 2011-2015. This city is proof that encouraging citizens to own guns can be a deterrent to criminals and decrease
