Dispositional optimism is a topic discussed by Dan P. McAdams on page 48 of “The Stories We Live By: Personal Myths and the Making of the Self.” Dispositional optimism is “a generalized expectancy that good, as opposed to bad, outcomes will generally occur” and that it has positive effects when coping with illness (48). Much research has shown that the power of positive thinking can help people “recover from illness, endure personal hardship, and triumph over a host of other adversaries” (48). While often the effects are exaggerated, empirical evidence shows that some of this may be true. When I first started to encounter medical hardship, aside from the breaks, sprains, strains, and pulls I encountered through middle school, I was in high …show more content…
It is indeed true that pain has stronger arms than anything else, at least in my personal experience. Perhaps this is why I have a tendency to remember more of the bad and overlook much of the good in my life. This is a great source of conflict that I have experienced, as it often interferes with my personal relationships. Similarly, on page 33, Hampl states “our capacity to move forward as a developing being rests on a healthy relation with the past.” During the last section of my writing, I struggle with developing a healthy relationship with my past. While I have accepted the hardships I have had to go through, I am not proud of how I handled them. When I look back, things do not seem as bad as they were, but in the present moment I could not have imagined them worse. Perhaps the most trouble I have with the past is my problems with trust. I have not yet relearned how to trust and have hope in those I surround myself with, and this negatively impacts my ability to develop as I should. At this point, I am working to create a healthy relationship with my past and repair my future, simultaneously. I need not learn to tell my stories, but listen to what my stories tell me. I will have a healthier future than I have had in the
In conclusion, my past has shaped who I am in ways unimaginable to the majority of my peers. Poverty and parenthood are two situations I became accustomed to early in my life. These events have taught me to persevere through any circumstances I may encounter. Considering my family has always depended on me, depending on people has never been an
Everyone tends to look back at their lives every know and then. The past can be used a tool, a motivator and a guide to help drive their future. Many people rely on their past to help guide them and use it as a tool to help make decisions. Even though looking at ones past is a giid thing Some people rely too heavily on their past and they get lost in it.
Positive Thinking William Channing once said, “Difficulties are meant to rouse, not discourage. The human spirit is to grow strong by conflict.” In the “Diary of Anne Frank”, Anne is going through hiding from german police and meanwhile, is stuck with her family and anothers. While in “”Dear Miss Breed” by Joanne Oppenheim, Louise Ogawa is writing about her tough times during the war. They both are able to stay positive which proves that having a positive attitude it the best way to respond to conflict.
Past mistakes can be a blessing or a curse depending on how you view them. Many have been driven insane by their past failures yet, many have also made peace with their past through God then used their past in their testimonies to lead large numbers to Christ. In order to use my past to advance the Kingdom of God I must not fall into the trap of depression and anxiety because of my past. I must fully surrender to God and not continue to dredge up my
Maintaining hope is key for long-term survivors of diseases such as HIV infection and breast cancer. Healthy coping, however, differs from the common societal notion of “positive thinking.” Having the capacity to tolerate and express concerns and emotions not just the ability to put anxieties aside, and additionally, discussing these as well as uncertainties and fears, losses and sadness that usually accompany severe illness is generally
Every person has their story. Good or bad no one is without a story. Ask yourself, are you afraid of your story? Have you been running from your past while chasing a better future? Once I learned to stop running from my story and embrace it instead, my life has been better.
For example, whenever my step father used to abuse my brothers and I we would never sleep with our be room doors unlocked in fear of being punished, and sadly still to this day I sleep with my bedroom door locked. Secondly , The behavioral perspective also suits me, I worked hard towards school and kept faith , because I did not give up I was rewarded my diploma and by me being rewarded my diploma I know what I 'm capable of, I know that I 'm destined for greatness. Because of my hardship I have fallen in love Jacksonville Florida so much , Its like my experiences in Jacksonville completely fractured me to a the point I thought I was unrepairable only to build myself up again.
According to Gerald Jampolsky, author of Change Your mind: Change Your Life, “[…] We are afraid that we are going to be hurt, rejected or unloved again and are fearful of the future because we believe that the awful past is doomed to repeat itself. When this is our belief, we find that is impossible to be happy in the present. Instead we spend our time superimposing the past upon the present.” This quote implies that by holding on to the pain from our past, it prevents us from thriving in our current lives.
The purpose of this essay is to pick apart Mill’s essay and to give my own personal opinion about happiness. Stuart believed that you could achieve happiness by helping others achieve happiness and by finding things that you enjoy in life. I believe the key to happiness is helping other people achieve their happiness, do things that you enjoy doing, and looking at things in the brightest way possible. I honestly believe that everyone wakes up in the morning wanting to be happy, I have never seen a person who wakes up saying, “ I want to have an absolutely miserable day today”. It is human nature to strive for happiness and do things that you enjoy to do.
I apologize if it seems like I am not answering the prompt at first, but in this scenario I find it important to give some background information. My mother always told me that your past helps shape your future. She came a family in Mexico and everyday was a battle to get by. She traveled three miles by foot just to get to school.
Question 1 The first part of this essay will discuss the optimism of liberals about human progress, cooperation and peace by giving reasons and examples of that optimism. Furthermore, this paper will look at how and why liberal arguments are invalid by providing examples. The essay will further deliberate the liberal’s view on conflict and the causes thereof. The type of actors in the theoretical explanation for conflict in the international system will also be discussed.
The positive effect of having optimism is something that should be considered in all facets of health as well as
Throughout that time, I had many great and bad experiences that made me the person who I am today. Everybody who knew me when I was a little child always told me that I was always messy. My mom would tell me that she would try not letting me go outside after she gave me a bath because I would just go outside and get messy all over again. She even said that I would eat dirt, I would walk inside with a dirt ring around my mouth. I might have ate enough dirt in that short amount of lifetime to be the more than the average amount people would eat in their lifetime.
Optimism is hopefulness for the future, and, like me, most people get their optimism from their roots, or how they were brought up as a child. My parents would always remind me from a young age that being pessimistic will not help you achieve your goal, so you might as well be optimistic and try. They have always taught me from a young age, and never denied or doubted, that with optimism comes opportunity, and that optimism is, in fact, the key to success. Over the years, I’ve learned that the more optimistic you are, the more creative you can be. With optimistic attitude, one can generate new ideas and create possibilities to move forward faster and more efficiently than at normal times, due to an open mind.
Path to a better life: Optimists vs. Pessimists The path that an individual takes to have a better life differs for each person. Often determined by luck and coincidence, some people may just lead a better life because luck favored them, like winning a lottery or finding out that you are from a ruling family by accident. But whether your life gets better by chance or not, you must not give up. Some people had very rough life in the beginning but they never gave up, they kept resisting until they got what they wanted.
