Provided that discourse analysis is subjective, and by the same token by adherence to pragmatic theories , the truth is also subjective and relative; hence, this study has employed a new approach for the analysis. There have been many contributions to the political discourse of the media (see: Wood & Kroger, 2000); however, the subjectivity of the frameworks and also the liberty to apply less appropriate models leads to diversity and sometimes inconsistency in the results. Given all that, this study has employed a cluster of methodologies in an endeavor to present the most reliable findings. Discourse analysis is an interdisciplinary discipline. It is also interested in the analysis of the various contexts of discourse, that is, in the cognitive …show more content…
The initial posed questions were whether a linguistic approach is the best way to analyze political text in the media and which approaches tend to be the most reliable in sense of analyzing political discourse in the media. (also, see: Richardson, 2006; Reah, 2002) As a result, an independent systematic analysis was conducted, which provided the existing literature of developments from political, linguist, communitive and psychological perspectives. In addition, as a part of the systematic analysis, 50 news items on the United Kingdom’s membership in the European Union were extracted from the leading British quality press and the headlines and lead sentences were evaluated in accordance with the discussed approaches, models and frameworks based on their political grounds, if any, and the relationship between the political orientation of the newspaper owners in reflecting their favored political party’s ideology on the media had been scrutinized. That study concluded that analyzing the same text based on different approaches, models and frameworks leads to a diversity in the findings. Hence, a model for sampling, variables, measurement, and analyses were suggested, and the …show more content…
All variables are categorical variables , which are qualitative data in which the values are assigned to a set of distinct groups or categories. The categorical variables often provide valuable social-oriented information that is not quantitative by nature. In the hierarchy of measurement levels, categorical variables are associated with the two lowest variable classification orders, nominal or ordinal scales, depending on whether the variable groups exhibit an intrinsic ranking. A nominal measurement level consists purely of categorical variables that have no ordered structure for intergroup comparison. The first group – V1 (genre), V3 (story impetus), V4 (section placement), V5 (size of article), and V6 (geopolitical frame) – which belong to the nominal level of measurement have two properties. First, the categories are mutually exclusive; that is, an object can belong to only one category. Second, the data categories have no logical order. The topic/headline classifications (V2) were merely intended for understating of the coverage, and due to the multi-cluster sub-variables for the measurement, the results of which were illustrated in word-clouds and reported in the
Measurement issues. Data, even numerically coded variables, can be one of 4 levels - nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio. It is important to identify which level a variable is, as this impact the kind of analysis we can do with the data. For example, descriptive statistics such as means can only be done on interval or ratio level data. Please list under each label, the variables in our data set that belong in each group.
A discourse community has yet to have a solid definition; though some have come close. One of the people who have attempted to define discourse community is John Swales. Swales, rather than use a standard definition, chose to create a set list of criteria. With the help of the criteria and my interview of Dane (a member of my chosen discourse community) I will discuss how my chosen group, Communications 101, is a discourse community. Communications 101 (Comm. 101) is a college credit class that helps the students in the class learn the “fundamental principles of verbal, nonverbal, written, and visual communication with an introduction to relational and organizational communication, public communication, and media studies.
The Many Powers Of Rhetoric In this section of “The UNF Guide To Writing” different authors discuss the robust powers of rhetorical writing. Nathan Thornburgh discussed “overheated rhetoric” in his writing Violent Rhetoric and Arizona Politics (52). He discussed the shooting that took place in Arizona over a political issue of immigration in which Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was killed. Thornburgh said that the over-exaggeration n that was places on the “issues” that were going on in Arizona is the reason people got angry enough and why it drove Jared Loughner, the shooter, to act out in a violent way (53).
Define Rhetoric. Rhetoric is the study and interpretation of any literary piece of work that has persuasive intentions to utilize language more effectively. Define discourse. Discourse is any literary work, whether it is literally written or orally spoken, that has meaning underlying inside of its text. It can range from books to images to music, etc.
Rhetorical Analysis of “Mind Over Mass Media” Many people believe that new forms of electronic media such as search engines, which offer easy access to incredible amounts of information are harmful to people’s intelligence because they allow us to understand only the main idea of the information provided instead of allowing us to gain an in depth understanding of the topic. Steven Pinker, a professor at Harvard University argues in his essay “Mind Over Mass Media” that these new forms of electronic media are actually beneficial to people's intelligence and the accusations made against it are unwarranted. He is successful in doing this because he brings up counterarguments and disproves them, he offers advice in practicing self control when
Magically Magnasoles Americans love the idea that with one magical pill or purchase all of their problems can disappear right before their eyes. This Onion article satirizes this component within American society by making fun of America’s willingness to believe dubious medical claims. Within The Onion article, it focuses on the product Magnasoles which is a shoe insert responsible for harnessing the power of magnetism to properly align the biomagnetic field around the foot. “It’s a total foot-rejuvenation system”, it can make all of a person’s problems go away.
In her essay, “I Had a Nice Time with you Tonight, on the app,” Jenna Wortham believes that social media apps are a helpful way to connect. Wortham swears by apps and is grateful that she can communicate with her boyfriend who is three thousand miles away. Yet some may challenge the view that Social Media apps are a reliable and effective method of communicating, Sherry Turkle stresses people are substituting online communication for face-to-face interaction. Although Turkle may only seem of concern to only a small group of people, it should in fact concern anyone who cares about the negative effects social media can have on people. In her eyes, nothing can replace person-to-person communication.
CHAPTER 5. INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION Quantitative v. Qualitative Studies Quantitative investigations are scientific, objective, and effective in describing phenomena in terms of magnitude (Balian, 1988). Quantitative investigations use numeric values and statistics to identify patterns, to objectively quantify relationships between variables, and to make predictions. In addition, because large sample sizes are used, data can be generalized to larger populations.
I would venture to guess that everyone reading this essay can remember a heated debate breaking out between their family, friends, or coworkers in this past week alone (whether they took part in it or just witnessed it). In an essay from An Annual Review of Political Science called Media and Political Polarization, be sure to punctuate all titles correctly Markus
In his article “Ratcheting Up the Rhetoric” (NY Times, 9/3/15) Charles M. Blow, asserts that recent accusations and opposition against the Black Lives Matter movement can be attributed to Americans unwilling to accept the uncomfortable reality of their racist society. Blow follows his claim with various statements made by the media accusing Black Lives Matter of being a “hate group”, examines the “concerted effort to defame and damage” the movement, and cites the public’s desperation to continue denying the truth of rampant police brutality and ingrained racism in America. Blow writes this article highlighting these wrongful attacks on Black Lives Matter in order to destroy the image of a violent “hate group” that the media has painted in society’s

4.Analysis of Political News in the View of Rewriting Theory 4.1 Linguistic features of political news Political news terms are mostly used to convey policies, guidelines, and regulations, and will change along with the time development. Lots of the current political news term comes from the public, then used by the official media. With the popularity of computers and the Internet, more and more new words constantly emerging, including many new words used in political news. 4.1.1 Generality and compact Since ancient times, the Chinese people have been good at summarizing and generalizing.
The study on television news used more categories. However, some of them were very similar and the amount of articles in each would be too small. Therefore, I decided to reduce the number of the categories and create more general ones. That means, for example, that I combined all stories about military planning or strategy; all stories about current situation in Iraq (life of ordinary people, opposition, airstrikes and sanctions); all articles about foreign country or views of foreigners composed another category. All the categories are listed below: 1 =
To elaborate, media sources such as newspapers and news channels can be identified as either ‘right-wing’ or ‘left-wing’ politics. In reference to ‘The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Politics’, right-wing politics can be defined as the
