“Emerging adulthood” article written by Arnett states that emerging adulthood is a stage that has been introduced for the beginning of the age 18 till 25. This new stage is a bridge that connects the adolescences and adult childhood. Various characteristics have described to define the emerging adulthood. The methods that have used includes the age of change, the age of possibility, the age of feeling in between and age of identity exploration. Emerging adulthood is time has been given to young people where they learn how to become adults. This stage helps them to explore their choices, educations, and careers. Arnett also states that emerging adulthood most likely to seem in the developed countries rather than countries where adulthood is more cultural based. This stage is very …show more content…
Arnett has provided enough detail about the stage and how it is successful in some cultures compare to the other. This article has also shown how emerging adulthood stage helps prepare adolescence for better future and help them explore their identity while getting them ready for adulthood. This comes with the disadvantage because some young people can take longer till they fully contribute to society. This is a type of a luxury that can’t be afforded by everyone. But once they complete this stage, they tend to be fully prepared and able to complete the demand of latest technology based jobs. They will have the knowledge to make crucial decisions at a mature level that will be helpful in the long run. A different thing that would help this article would be to trying to get more evidence of culture differences and also trying to get a survey of forgotten young adults. This could help to see the other view of life. The young people who skipped this stage are managing in their lives. At the end, data of college students and non- college students should be compared to see if this stage is actually needed or
What have I learned about myself as a learner from this chapter? According to the beginning of this chapter, each person who lives long enough will become a part of every age group. Without choice, we must all go through the various stages in life and eventually join the ranks of the aged. Like other cultural groups, we feel, think, perceive, and behave, in part, based on the age group to which we belong. The study of age as a function of culture is important to educators because it helps them understand how the child or adolescent struggles to win peer acceptance and to balance this effort with the need for parental approval.
The environment is oftens change therefore people also change to adapt to different phases. I agree with Christopher McCandless about making a change in his life. In my opinion, the young children like discovering new things and they want to study much knowledge. The teenagers are more hyperactive than adult and old stage. For example, the children are usually naughty with works in house or school.
Adulthood is the ability to express love, to receive love, and to love yourself through all the faulty attributes and elements. In the article, “What is the Age of Responsibility?” Written by Alan Greenblatt, it is questioned whether 18 and 21 is the age of adulthood, and the short story, “Catch the Moon” by Judith Ortiz Coffer proves the answer is absolutely not. The
Transitioning high schools my freshman year was a major eye opener. It does not seem like a big deal, for almost everyone has transitioned to a different school, however, I transitioned from going to class everyday and always being told what do, to doing my course work online and creating my own school schedule. I used to go to a public school called Houston High School, located right next to my house in Germantown, Tennessee. I would go to school everyday, and then do my favorite activity after school, which was riding horses. I have a tremendous passion for riding and competing horses, and it is what led me to transitioning to my online high school, the University of Miami Global Academy.
In recent years, it has become more and more apparent that the adolescents of today are unfit for the responsibilities currently available to them. Equipping someone who is unable to fathom the risks of the decisions they make with the power to put themselves and others in danger is far too precarious. For this reason, the age at which adolescents become adults currently established is dangerously low. The age of legal adulthood should be 25, because at this age young adults are truly capable of comprehending the consequences of their actions and are able to handle the responsibilities of adulthood.
Coming of Age Research Paper Coming of age is the process of maturing through the time transmitting you from childhood to adulthood. While maturing you gain many different perspectives in life while better understanding your own perspective. The person who has the most perspectives on a subject is the person who is most knowledgeable. Coming of age is gaining different perspectives which lets everyone become more mature by becoming more knowledgeable in multiple subjects. One time on a summer day when I was in a tennis class, me and my friends started slacking off and started playing around during practice.
Blogger, Marc Chernoff exploits the alternative side of the definition of adulthood in her article, “What is Adulthood”. Throughout the article Chernoff analyzes alternative definitions for adulthood, ones centered around the mentality of the individual. Chernoff declares that adulthood is “based strictly on emotional maturity”(Chernoff). Chernoff then goes on to explain how an adult must satisfy various standards such as “accepting negative feedback as a tool for self improvement”, and even, “being able to distinguish between ‘needs’ and ‘wants’”(Chernoff). Although Chernoff has gotten closer to the true meaning of adulthood, even her list proves difficult for most who consider themselves ‘adults’ to check off.
Adulthood holds no authenticity for several reasons; there is a complete loss of innocence when a child transitions from childhood to adulthood, adults tend to no
Young people today are being irresponsible by delaying the rituals of adult life, because they are wasting their precious young years by delaying being responsible for themselves, taking care of themselves, and starting their own life for example, their own family. Young people today are lazy and many are not able to support themselves, because they depend on someone else to take care of them. But young people should understand that they are going to have to be on their own one day, and will not know how sustain themselves if they don’t start learning how to become an independent. Young people today take a longer time to mature and take on the responsibilities of an adult such as getting a good job, and moving out of their parent’s house,
According to Laurence Steinberg (2013), adolescence is the psychological and physical development that usually occurs during the age of puberty to adulthood, which is commonly associated with teenagers. Cultural and psychological expressions may begin earlier or end later, though it’s mostly expressed physically. Historically, adolescence has been thought to begin with the onset of various developments but nowadays may begin before teenage years, particularly in the females .Cognitive development and physical growth, as seen in men may extend to early twenties and therefore the chronological age provides a rough transition of the adolescence (Laurence Steinberg, 2013).There are many factors which determine adolescence transition. These include economic standing, gender, ethnicity and many more. In this paper I will use the “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” and “Roll of Thunder” to discuss how the above factors determine the adolescence as well as proving whether adolescence is a universal experience.
The stage of development I am currently in is emerging adulthood, which is the focus of the eleventh chapter entitled “Adulthood: Emerging Adulthood” on pages 389 to 424 of the book. This stage of human development typically occurs during the ages of 18 to 25, and it is characterized by being a confusing time for the person in which they try to figure out where their place in the world is. The existence of emerging adulthood was fairly recently discovered as it appeared through changing concepts in western society. It was never a stage until a couple decades ago when western culture put an emphasis on values such as waiting longer for marriage and the necessity of going to college.
Name and summarize the 4 points that Arnett discusses regarding why today 's Emerging Adults are often times viewed negatively. In this article, Jeffrey Jensen Arnett discusses four main points which he believes are the reasons why today’s emerging adulthood are viewed negatively. One of these reasons is that “the later entrance into adult roles by today’s emerging adults is misinterpreted by older adults as selfishness” (Arnett 90). In other words, teenagers nowadays have the option to take their time before presuming their adult roles which was not open to teenagers back in the day.
Emerging adulthood is teens to early 20s explore prior to committing to adult role. Most teens think they are adults by the age of 18 because, that is the voting age and drinking age as well as the legal age of adulthood but, they don’t want to take the full role of being an adult and this include education. Every parent want their child to get a higher education than they received. It can be hard especially, for a student whose parents received zero education and was the first to graduate college in their family because, they don’t have financial support from their families they can only do so much encouraging them to finish school and achieve higher than them, compare to someone whose entire families graduated from college they are more likely
David Levinson’s (Hutchinson, p. 276-277 & 320-321) life structure theory characterizes adulthood as a period of instability with great stress, especially in the young adulthood, as important decisions are being made during this time. He describes those who are seventeen to twenty-two are in a novice phase. In the novice phase, personalities are still developing and they find themselves separating from their families. This phase is where ideas start to form and initial decisions are made in regards to families, relationships, and careers. Transition into adulthood happens around age thirty, when significant changes in life trajectory happen.
Some teenagers are having sex. Some teenagers start working during this time. Some teenagers later in adolescences start college application and prepare for graduations. I believe that the adolescence stage covers so much and is a huge transition. I decided to talk about several important changes
