Differences Between The Northern And Southern Colonies

Although New England and Virginia both bordered the Atlantic and established in the early 1600s, New Englanders lived thirty years longer (30/60 vs. 40/70), and Virginia had a prevalent presence of indentured slaves and servants. In the New England colonies (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, and Rhode Island), the economy was dependent on their industries, not their agriculture. The thirteen colonies, which were divided into 3 regions, were all different and unique in many ways. However, the diversity among the New England Colonies, the Middle Colonies and the Southern Colonies is perhaps what made them so distinctive. The differences between these three regions affected the way they lived, but later, they gained knowledge by analyzing their mistakes and differences. Although these three regions only had a few things in common, it was the differences among them that helped them grow and learn from one another.

Although all the colonists all came from England, the community development, purpose, and societal make-up caused a distinct difference between two distinct societies in New England and the Chesapeake region. The distinctions were obvious, whether it be the volume of religious drive, the need or lack of community, families versus single settlers, the decision on minimal wage, whether or not articles of agreements were drawn for and titles as well as other social matters were drawn, as well as where loyalties lay in leaders. One big difference is that New England colony didn’t believe in slavery like the southern colonies believed. Slaves and indentured servants were the backbone of the Southern economy. They did much of the labor work for the southern colonies cash crops.

This influenced them to look more from the New World for individual gain and did not hold as much allegiance to England as the southern colonist did. Southern pilgrims went to the New World regularly by companies promising land. For instance, if Virginia guaranteed fifty acres of land to each individual paying to go to the New World this implied that they still positively liked the English and were not leaving England to escape persecution. While their property and financial frameworks may have been awful in England they saw their voyage as a way the English government was helping them turn out more stable.
