This chapter explains the difference between race and ethnicity and how they came about. It also explains the advantages and disadvantages some have due to the creation of race. Race and ethnicity have strong foundations not only within countries, but between them. Globalization has increased the individual’s ethnic identities, but has also put some at disadvantages. Having different races and ethnicities is not an issue, but ranking the different races and putting others at disadvantages creates issues. Racism occurs when a minority group is defined, negative characteristics are associated with them, and they are kept at a disadvantage to others. The most interesting aspect of racism is how people justify making their classifications. Race is a socially constructed term. This means people of a society made up race without any real backing or evidence to do so. One’s race is based mostly on their physical characteristics like skin color or hair type, or lineage. Another socially defined term is ethnicity, which is based on one’s cultural characteristics like language, religion, and traditions. Some attempt to …show more content…
These places are considered majority-minority populations. However, the definition of majority does not depend on a numerical value, but rather differences in prestige, income, and power. Minority groups are individuals with less power, wealth, and prestige, and the majority groups are those with more of each category. These classifications case prejudice and discrimination, which negatively effect individuals in minority groups. Some are even members of two minority groups, which makes situations and opportunities worse for them. On the other hand, some people can also e a part of two majority groups, causing them to be extremely advantaged. Since the individuals in power benefit from discrimination of others, leveling the hierarchy is an extremely difficult

Furthermore, racial democracy is not instilled in the general consciousness and these countries are now turning to multiculturalism and starting to tackle the issues of racial inequality, however inadequate these efforts may be. However, the data collection on all racial and ethnicity categories that people identify with as well as their skin color and hair texture must happen to adequately capture the extent of racial inequality in these countries—this issue of measurement and data collection might hinder potential racial progresses from
The results found show that Caucasian that live in a predominantly Caucasian environment, have a high over all preference for their own race. Small exposure to Asian/Asian Americans and/ or their culture can reduce Caucasian American’s racial preference. By making an overall diverse society, we can assume that racial prejudice will decline. Keywords: IAT “Why race matters.”
The relationship between race and racism is due to the fact that there are racial categories created, in order for particular social groups to be on top of the hierarchy. For example, the white group, which is on top of this racial hierarchy, established the notion of race in order to benefit themselves, which has led to racism among other minority groups. The ideology of a group being superior than others leads to racism. Ultimately, race is the product of racism, and racism is not the product of race (25).
Media have created their own versions and definitions of ethnicity and race controlling our minds as well. It is part of our daily lives, our social institutions, and our history of how we understand ethnicity. Race classifies the people on basis of physical characteristics. Ethnicity on the other hand classifies on the basis of nationality, beliefs, culture, language, ancestry and place of origin.
Race, nationality and ethnicity Race and ethnicity are seen as form of an individual’s cultural identity. Researchers have linked the concept of “race” to the discourses of social Darwinism that in essence is a categorization of “types” of people, grouping them by biological and physical characteristics, most common one being skin pigmentation. Grouping people based on their physical traits has lead in time to the phenomenon of “racialization” (or race formation), as people began to see race as more of a social construct and not a result or a category of biology.
What 's racism? Racism is the belief that an exact race is superior or inferior to another, that an individual 's social and moral traits are predetermined by way of his or her inborn traits or in different words the belief that each one individuals of each race possess characteristics, skills, or qualities specified to that race, in particular in order to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. Racism has many types such as racism towards other religions and other ethnicities but essentially the most noted style of racism is the racism against colored people. And there are three most important factors to why racism towards colored folks occurs and they are ignorance, fear of loss and displacement and finally the people’s desire to feel superior. Starting off with the first cause which is ignorance, what continues racism is ignorance in the world.

It is the “hatred” of one person to another individual, solely based on that person's belief that the person is inferior because of their language, birthplace and skin colour. At first glance, people do recognize that I am of mixed race – my mother is Japanese-Argentine and my father is a German. Being raised by two immigrant parents and being racially mixed was not too uncommon in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Because my parents met in Argentina, I grew up in a household where my parents conversed in Spanish. Therefore, I spoke German with my father and Japanese with my mother. I grew up in Friendship Heights, a residential neighborhood, encircled by commercial structures and office buildings.
Racism is one of the darkest, deepest and disgusting social issues of the world, existing throughout the history of mankind. It is a social construct created by humans to categorise the world. Racism is learned, we are not born with it. The most traditional form of this is discrimination based on one’s skin colour.
