The North and South emerged as two distinct regions because they had various differences. These differences included the geography, the economy, slavery, and transportation. The North was built mainly on factories and trade and opposed slavery, while the South’s foundation was agriculture and slavery. The geography of the South was more rural than the North and the North had more means of transportation than the South. These drastic characteristics created a vast divide between the two regions. One of the most striking differences between the North and South was the climate and geography. In the North, there was a surplus of natural resources such as coal and iron. There were also many rivers and lakes that helped the development of port cities. …show more content…
New England also had many ports.” This explains that there are plentiful resources in the North and also several waterways. It didn’t explicitly state that there were several waterways, however, I can infer because there are ports, there are also waterways. However the South isn’t an antithesis, the geography does vary. While the North had lots of natural resources such as trees, the south had their resource in the dirt. The South’s economy was built on agriculture, the soil that they used played a key part because they were able to grow lots of food and cotton. I know this because in Discovering Our Past: The American Journey, the text explains, “Why was there little industry in the South? One reason was because of the boom in cotton sales. Because agriculture was so profitable, Southerners remained committed to farming rather than starting new businesses.” This is a key difference between the North and the South. This provided for entirely different lifestyles. The North was filled with factories, …show more content…
I would want to live in the North because there is no slavery in the North, life seemed easier, the economy in the North seemed more profitable, and there is industrial work. I am opposed to slavery which is part of the reason I’d prefer to settle down in the North. I know there is no slavery because in Discovering Our Past: The American Journey, the text says, “Popular novels and films often portray the South before 1860 as a land of stately plantations owned by rich white slaveholders. In reality, most white Southerners were either small farmers without slaves or planters with a handful of slaves.” This quote explains that there were a large amount of slaves in the South. I also know that there was a large discrepancy between the North and the South on slavery so I can conclude that there is no legal slavery in the North. This is a reason I would choose to live in the North and not live in the South. Life seemed easier to be in the North because everyday work wasn’t in unbearable conditions in the North. In the South, there climate is very harsh which makes the daily work, cruel. I know this because in Discovering Our Past: The American Journey, the text states, “They worked from sunrise to sunset planting, cultivating, and picking cotton and other crops.” This explains how brutal the work was in the South. The North’s work isn’t perfect, however, it is much better than the South’s.
When conflicting ideologies reach a magnitude so high that agreements aren't even an option, war is generally the conclusion. War is accompanied by a number of negative aspects. Specifically, human fatalities, the destruction of economies, harm to the environment, and quoting the film Platoon, "the first casualty of war is innocence." However, besides all the negative aspects, the side that comes out triumphant, generally gains something of great significance. It could be immense power, stature, or land.
The North had a far better economy than the south, with about twice as many soldiers, factories benefited the North’s economy rather than the South, increasing tensions between the two regions. Southerners relied on their plantations and slaves to work on them, so the fact that the Northerners wanted to take away their slaves just pushed the South to the edge. By 1860 the North had over twice the amount of railroads as the South; despite the fact that the South had a larger population due to slaves (Doc A). The mass amounts of railroads in the North upheld the large amounts of deliveries between factories. While the North was mostly industrial and the South was more agricultural.
The North had many advantages. They beat the South in population they could draw soldiers from. The North had 22 million citizens where the South only had 5.5 million citizens. The North could transport supplies and people faster because of their roads, canals, and railroads. However the South disconnected from itself with barely any railroads and hard to move soldiers and goods from place to place.
Socially, the North and the South were built on different standards. The South states, practiced slave- based ideologies. Many depended on slaves and were accustomed to this way of life, which was hard to change, as plantations were a common way of profit here the South felt that without slaves their financial earnings would drastically decrease. The North, or Free States, on the other hand, had more immigrants settling in its areas. Therefore, it had a more industrialized society where most people worked in factories to gain money to support themselves.
In the north the soil wasn't as fertile as it was in the south, so the north relied on manufacturing goods. Up near present day Canada, was where the French landed, and whom hunted beaver for their pelt to sell for profit in Europe, but their politics were different
The residents of the North desired a more powerful and centralized government with more government control and bigger banks. On the contrary, the people of the south wanted a weaker federal government and wanted more power given to the states. The reason these differences existed were due to the different industries that the North and South focused on. The South was heavily focused on farming and produce to sustain their economy. This meant that they required cheap manual labor.
A civil war was fought in the United States between the Union and Confederate armies over the main issue of slavery. In the beginning of this war the Confederates were the dominating force although the Union began to make make their way when they won the Battle of Antietam (September 17, 1862). This win allowed Abraham Lincoln, the president at the time, to issue the Emancipation Proclamation to keep the Unions lead. The creation and implementation of the Emancipation Proclamation created a turning point in the war between September 1862 and April 1865. This event led to many social, political, and economic outcomes.
The South was able to produce 7/8 of the worlds cotton supply. The South became more dependent on the planted field system and it’s full of force part, slavery. Notably, at that moment, the North was flourishing industrially. The North depended on factories and others
There were many differences between the North and the South. For instance, the South were very agricultural as opposed to the North which were industrial. The South used cheap labor in the form of slaves, whereas the North had workers do their jobs in factories at a faster pace. Because of sectionalism, competition between the north and the south began to increase.
The primary goal of Britain in establishing earlier settlements along the Northern coast is solely for trade. The raw materials gathered from areas in New England like Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and the Rhode Islands were processed into finished goods (“Northern Colonies”). These good were then shipped back to the colonies for profits (Brands et al, 33). Being more industrialized than the Southern counterpart, the northern colonies were well known as center for transport of natural resources such as furs and timbers (“Northern Colonies”).
The south was geographically blessed and had a heavy economic advantage over the middle and northern
The South had very little industry. It was based off of an agrarian economy (Document B). Slaves picked cotton off the plantation and the farmers sold the cotton to make money (Document A). The Southern weren't able to keep their money without slaves working for free. Slavery was vital in the South for the economy.
In the South, the soil was fertile and excellent for growing a wide variety of crops and had long growing seasons; in the North, the soil was rocky and the growing season was shorter. As one can tell from this, slaves were more of a necessity in the South due to their high importance for working the land and not as much in the North because the land did not require the same amount of rigorous slave labor. (Document A) Moreover, at the end of the Manifest Destiny era, the United States succeeded in achieving its goal of dominating North
The north had frozen winters with short hot and humid summers. The north had very vast forests. The south had subtropical forests and many rainfalls. The north had very fast and rocky rivers which made it very difficult to navigate. Compared to the north, the south had slow rivers and very easy to navigate.
The North and South emerged as two differences because they had various differences. These differences included the geography, the economy, societal, and differences in the transportation systems. One of the most strong differences between the North and the South was the Climate and geography. In the North The climate is very different from the south. North has warm summers and snowy, cold winters like wise the south has warm, sunny, hot, humid summers ;and mild winters ,and heavy rainfall.
