Differences Between Jamestown And The Colonists

The Second Anglo-Powhatan War was fought from 1622 until 1632, pitting English colonists in Virginia against the Algonquian-speaking Indians of Tsenacomoco, led by Opitchapam and his brother (or close kinsman) Opechancanough. After the First Anglo-Powhatan War (1609–1614), which ended with the marriage of Pocahontas and John Rolfe, the English colony began to grow. The headright system begun in 1618 granted land to new immigrants who, in turn, sought to make their fortunes off tobacco. As English settlements pressed up the James River and toward the fall line, Indian leaders devised a plan to push them back and, in so doing, assert their supremacy over the newcomers.

Which colony would be best to travel and live with? The Jamestown or Plymouth colony? These two seem completely different given some of the facts but do have certain things in common. A difference would be the leaders, of course. Jamestown was led by John Smith, and Plymouth was led by William Bradford.

The Powhatan Confederacy, an alliance of Algonquian-speaking tribes led by Chief Powhatan, saw the English settlement of Jamestown as a trespass on their territory. As a result, the Jamestown colonists were subjected to recurrent Powhatan raids, putting their lives and long-term survival in the region in jeopardy. The colonists found it difficult to communicate and bargain with the Powhatan, with whom they had incited war and shared no interests. The native tribes had a long history of animosity against European immigration, and the colonists' presence merely exacerbated existing tensions. New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely of English origin, but by the 1700 the regions had evolved into two distinct societies. The difference in development occurred because of different religion beliefs, situations the colony was under, and different political views. Starting a colony wasn’t trouble-free. The settlers struggled with: starvation, lack of clean water, disease, and and indigenous people. Some settlers even disappeared almost completely, with the reasoning being unknown.

The colony of Jamestown was at a population of 504 after an arrival of a fleet of 9 ships carrying women, men, children and much needed food and supplies. Captain John Smith took hold of the chaotic government and put in place rigid policies of discipline and agricultural cultivation. In 1608 a gunpowder accident wounding Smith, his rivals used this opportunity to force him to return to England and name George Percy as his successor as president of the council. The day before John Smith’s departure, Captain Davis arrived with 16 other men adding to the population of Jamestown. However, a few weeks later, president Percy sent Captain Ratcliffe to build a fort for fishing and trade at Point Comfort.

Events such as the colonization of Jamestown show the curiosity and courage of human beings throughout all of the years of their existence. Jamestown was a colony that shouldn’t have happened, after the English saw what happened to the Roanoke colony that had mysteriously disappeared. The English showed their courage by trying again with Jamestown. This isn’t the first event that shows the curiosity and bravery of humans. Events such as the moon landing and the first airplane at Kitty Hawk show the sheer mettle of humans.

From the beginning the colonists were pushing the Indians away, and didn’t even see them as people. This is where the social side comes into play. In the beginning the Indians actually tried to help the new colonists, but they pushed the Indians away before they were even given a chance. Tensions began to rise, and the political factor arose. The Powhatan War began due to many years of fighting and arguing between the Powhatan Indians and Colonists.

1. They hatred for the whites is what keep the Shawnee and several other tribes tighter and actually working tighter. There are several attempts recorded of the whites/settlers trying to convert the Shawnee to a different religion. The Shawnee strongly disagreed with this notion and actually captured those who tried. Early in time, settlers did make contact with the Shawnee for trading purposes.

Jamestown and Plymouth were the first English colonies in America. Both settlements faced harsh conditions which included weather, starvation and disease. In addition, both colonies struggled in creating a stable society, economy and government. The location of these two colonies was also a determining factor in their survival. Both colonists settled in modern day America for different reasons but were driven by the same ambitions for a new life that would determine how long the colony would last.

Jamestown colony and Plymouth colony have are two similar colonies but at the same time are so very different. One similarity is that each colony had a large number of deaths after winter. One difference is that Plymouth colony had a good relationship with the Native Americans and Jamestown didn't have a good relationships with them. A second difference is that the two colonies came for different reasons.

These two colonies were different, yet had a number striking similarities in government's, reasons for settlements, and differing economic activities.

The Natives believed that the Europeans are “edgy, rapacious, and remotely maladroit.” Sure enough, the settlers in Jamestown kenned little about farming and found the environment baffling. It was conspicuous that the colonists needed the avail of the Natives. Despite their inexperience the English dominated the Indians.
