As the plot continues, we start to learn the small details of Marilyn’s life. She says, “I haven’t seen [Gerry] for so long, and I didn’t want to wait another year when I could see him now…” (3). All she wanted to do was see her brother, she didn’t do anything wrong. She is just a young, naive girl who didn’t know what she was doing. “If you make me leave the ship, I’ll die” (5). Learning about Marilyn’s reasoning is very important. Now the reader is close to Marilyn and doesn’t want her to die, causing suspense and uncertainty about the ending. Barton waits until the very last second the kill Marilyn because he knows that there is nothing to be done about her fate, but he can give her as long as possible to stay alive and write letters to …show more content…
Marilyn died for doing something she didn’t understand the consequences of, but he family will love her even though she is gone. Another reason is Barton understands human emotion and feeling, even in the middle of the cold frontier. He is able to comfort Marilyn, and tell her she won’t be forgotten. He is able to retain his human qualities so far away from Earth. The passage says a lot about human love and emotion The cold equations are the ones that state that an EDS can only carry a certain amount of people with a certain amount of fuel. And if there is anything not accounted for, it is x, not wanted or needed. In this situation it is Marilyn. Other examples of coldness is when Marilyn pauses to ask if Barton thinks it’s cold in the EDS. And Barton says it’s colder than it should be. Coldness also makes an appearance when Barton is supposed to coldy kill whatever stowaway he …show more content…
Because man had ventured out of forgiving area of Earth, they were subject to nature’s laws in the frontier. Nature does not take into account people’s feelings and emotions, it just does what it pleases. This is shown in this short story, because in the end, Marilyn is killed, and nothing she felt or Barton did could have changed

She heard loud screams and the noise of broken dishes as she made her way towards the porch of Emma's home, she was about to hesitantly knock on the door. When she heard Emma calling her from behind. "Psst..over here" "Emma, what's going on inside?" "I'll tell you everything, but first let's get you in, you're freezing" Emma took hold of Olivia's arm and pulled her towards the back door of their home. As she was about to climb the stairs towards Emma's
In the story, “The Cold Equations”, Tom Godwin depicts the thematic tension as to never go against the path that you’re traveling on, because you could take a wrong turn and end up on a path towards unexpected consequences. In the year 2178, there are cruisers to carry people to the colonies on the far reaches of the galaxy. On the cruiser Stardust, a girl named Marilyn slipped onto an “EDS” or emergency dispatch ship. The EDS’s are only given enough fuel to arrive at their destination and return to the cruiser, with no added weight or any added variables. Marilyn’s added weight had been noticed by the captain of the EDS, and he would have killed her instantly if she were a man, but because she isn’t, he tried to spare her life.
1.We never understand a person until we climb into his skin and walk around in it. We never understand a person until we climb into his skin and walk around in it. Everybody thought that Boo Radley Radley was weird and gross. Everybody but Scout after Boo radley put a blanket around Scout while they were out during the winter in Maycomb.
In “The Lowest Animal”, Mark Twain explains man’s morals and ethics as they compare to the “higher” animals, while in the poem “Ethics” by Linda Pastan, a simple situation is given to show what a person believes is right and wrong; both works reveal the theme hope. Mark Twain takes an interesting approach to explain human nature in his work, “The Lowest Animal”. For example,“[h]e is the only one that inflicts pain for the pleasure of doing it” (Twain 538). People understand that hurting another human being is wrong, whether that be physical or mental abuse. However they sometimes do it anyways for the satisfaction that the action provides.
The story “Contents of a Dead Man’s Pockets” by Jack Finney, Tom Benecke makes a dramatic discovery about his life and how he has been spending it. Finney begins with Tom’s wife asking him to go to a movie with her, but he refuses claiming that his work needs to be completed. I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The book is about a child named Scout who grows up during the 1930’s around the time of the great depression. While she grows up she is taught life lessons and learns to see people in different ways. Some people she learns more about are Tom Robinson, a man who her father is defending in court, and Boo Radley, her neighbor who never comes out of his house. Scout is also confronted with a lot of situations where she is not old enough to understand at her young age, but as the reader hears her reading from an older perspective she realizes these situations were important.
1) In this quote, the term being used is metaphor because Life and Game are two completely different things but they are being compared to each other like if they are similar. 2) I think the author’s purpose for using this term is that he explains that Holden feels alone because he doesn’t feel like he is winning. 3) This quote revolves around the overall theme because it shows that Holden is isolated from everybody around him. 4) • I really like this dislike this idea because Holden is wrong you need to play according to the rules to win not be on the winning side. • I think this idea seems important because it is an inspiration quote to live by even though Holden doesn’t believe it; this is how life goes it is in reality.
All is Not Fair in Love and War First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross is wrong for allowing his infatuation with a girl named Martha to distract him from the Vietnam war and his responsibilities as a lieutenant. Throughout the story, Cross’ thoughts are constantly focused on Martha instead of the war or the men he is charged with leading and ultimately protecting. Because of Cross’ clouded thoughts and poor leadership, Ted Lavender, a soldier in his platoon, is shot and killed.
Family trust and secrets are two major themes in the book Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng. Readers are first presented with the fact that Lydia, the favorite child in a family of five, is dead, and they are taken on an crazy, complex journey to find out how and why. Through this journey they detect the growing tension between family members, and how their desire to keep secrets from each other ultimately lead to family discord. Personally, I believe that family members do not need to, but rather are encouraged, to share their feelings with one another.
Suicide is a very complicated event, and there are usually many different reasons why an individual decides to take his or her own life. Often, it involves a number of different people. In the case of Lydia Lee from Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng, it technically was her own fault that she drowned in the community lake. However, many people in her daily life did play a role in her decision to go out to the lake in the first place, especially the members of her family. Even though Nath and James both did play a very significant role in Lydia’s decision to commit suicide, Marilyn should be to blame for Lydia’s death because she put too much pressure on her, she disregarded her feelings, and because she never promoted a healthy social life.
With her wet red lips and wiggling fanny, Marilyn Monroe was perceived as the sex icon of her age and recognized worldwide as the “sweet angel of sex”. Monroe “was manufactured by no one but herself, self-created from the start.” (35, Harvey) and with her originality, she remained as an indelibly admired figure. The role that made her this much recognized and helped her be one of the most desired women in world was her generic “dumb blonde” character.
The Glass Menagerie, by Tennessee Williams, tells the story of how the standards of society influence two siblings. Tom and Laura Wingfield are two miserable people who no matter how hard they try, cannot seem to fit in. The play takes place in St. Louis, 1937, in which men and women have specific roles and expectations. Men are expected to have jobs, get married and provide for their family. Women are expected to get married, have babies and stay home to raise their children.
