HIV/AIDS is an issue that has been plaguing the world since detection and knowledge of the autoimmune disease in the 1980s. And since then the disease has spread rapidly throughout the world, while it is more prevalent in areas of poverty, it is making a strong appearance in the developed countries as well, such as the United States. HIV is a virus. And like all Viruses they cannot grow or reproduce on their own, they need to infect the cells of a living organism in order to thrive. The human immune system usually finds and kills viruses efficiently, however when HIV attacks the immune system itself, it annihilates the immune system and makes it difficult to fight the disease as well as many others. As HIV virus continues to wreak havoc onto …show more content…
Many people in the 1980s have were infected with HIV by the use of blood transfusions and blood products which were not screened and were contaminated with the virus. In much of the world this is no longer a significant risk, as blood donations are routinely tested for HIV.HIV/AIDS can be passed through Injection when a person uses recreational drugs s: HIV can be passed on when injecting equipment that has been used by an infected person is then used by someone else. In many parts of the world, often because it is illegal to possess them, injecting equipment or works are shared. An infection from the virus, usually shows little to no symptoms in the beginning of the infection. However, as the infection progresses, an onslaught of symptoms appear. Common symptoms with an infection from HIV/AIDS, include: Some people experience a flu-like illness, develop a rash, swollen glands and most importantly the most significant symptom would be a drastic decrease in antibodies. Once HIV is detected, most people are prescribed drugs in order to slow the progression of the disease, however a cure still has not been found. (Avert, …show more content…
Brown who has been living with HIV since 1995, was also suffering from Leukemia. Normally, when dealing with cancers the treatments include radiation therapy and chemotherapy. However, Brown’s condition and category of cancer Leukemia (Cancer of the white blood cell) prompted doctors to not only include radiation to kill the cancer cells, but an inclusion of a bone marrow transplant as well in order to produce new white blood cells. The same year Brown’s HIV was essentially gone, no longer existing in his body. The reason the virus remains undetectable in Brown, but high speculation and studies show that it was due to a bone-marrow transplant from a donor who had a rare genetic mutation that renders a person’s CD4-T cells the immune cells that are the main target of HIV infection resistant to the virus. It is also possible that radiation killed very nearly all of Browns cells that contained HIV at the outset of his treatment .Now in a small studies are in the process of replicating this “cure”, and attempting to make it available to others diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. Is it
They could produce a unique protein and HTLV, both connected to HIV. This discovery meant new research and treatment methods could be developed. John, on the other hand, was furious. His doctor had deliberately deceived him. John decided to sue Dr. Golde stating that the cells were his property and that he wanted a share in the profits gained from the research.
The problem was that cells often die quickly outside of the body. As you might guess, he was thrilled when he received a call offering him some cells from every woman patient with cervical cancer in exchange for trying to grow some cells. TeLinde began taking samples from every woman that walked into Hopkins with cervical cancer, including Henrietta’s. Henrietta’s tumor was invasive, and Hopkins treated all invasive carcinomas with radium; a white radioactive metal that glows blue. Radium destroys any cell it encounters, and patients who’d taken it in the past began dying.
Magic Johnson Living with HIV by. Arianna Viera After a press conference, the that it thought that Johnson had just pronounced his own death sentence. Earvin "Magic" Johnson, former basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers (position was point guard), shocked the world on November 7, 1991 when he told that he had caught HIV the disease that causes AIDS. He has been living with it for the last 20 years of his life.
His records indicated, by the Prince George's County Detention Center, he was informed of being infected with the virus on September 25, 1991. He was given instruction by a social worker on February of 1992 to practice “safe sex.” so that the virus would not spread to any sexual partner. Smallwood informed healthcare providers of the Children's hospital, on July of 1993, that he had always used a condom and that he had only one sexual partner. He was tested again for the HIV virus on both February and March in 1994.
If I was diagnosed with HIV, I would be in shock/disbelief, and I may ask to repeat the blood test, to make sure that the diagnosis is correct. HIV is going to make drastic changes in my life. My days would not be the same. I would worry about my husband and children, and be embarrassed to tell my relatives and friends. I would feel terrible about the whole situation, isolation, pain, suffering, and helplessness.
A solution to address the stigma of the AIDS epidemic on an individual level is for friends and family members to encourage people to seek help by speaking to HIV or AIDS counselors. Also, encourage people to get tested for AIDS as well. When one is in a relationship, they should simply be honest about their condition so that other people do not contract the
There are four ways that you can catch HIV. The four ways are; Sexual intercourse (vaginal and anal),Oral sex (mouth-penis, mouth-vagina),Sharing injection needles, and Mother to Child. To continue,Mary fisher contracted HIV from her husband during marriage. Throughout Mary Fisher's speech she says that “It does not care whether you are Democrat or Republican. It does not ask whether you are black or white, male or female, gay or straight, young or old.”
Fischer calls out all the stereotypes that were associated with being HIV positive when she states “In the context of an election year, I ask you-here, in this great hall, or listening in the quiet of your home-to recognize that the AIDS virus is not a political creature. It does not care whether you are Democrat or Republican. It does not ask whether you are black or white, male or female, gay or straight, young or old. “ Her reasoning is both convincing and all inclusive. While she states that the virus is not a political creature she uses words that are meant to scare her audience into action.
Hello Professor and Classmates, As a human service professional I would have to intercede differently with a client who has a diagnosis of AIDS from a client who has been diagnosed as HIV positive for many reasons. HIV is a virus that gradually attacks the immune system, which is our body’s natural defense against illness. AIDS is a syndrome caused by the HIV virus. It is when a person’s immune system is too weak to fight off many infections.
AIDS is a condition that is caused by a condition called HIV that attacks the immune system of people, making them weaker, vulnerable and decreasing their life expectancy. This disease is transmitted by certain bodily fluids and it has affected the infectants as well as their families and friends due to social stigmas and misunderstandings about AIDS. The epidemic had a big social impact within the United States, “When AIDS appeared in the early 1980s, most of its victims were gay men. For a time the disease was known as GRID—gay-related immune deficiency. The epidemic rekindled older pseudoscientific ideas about the inherently diseased nature of homosexual bodies.”
The AIDS epidemic began in the 1980’s and the effects of it were seen all around the globe. Each country led their own unique approach to preventing and curing AIDS, and some strategies worked better than others. The Australian response to AIDS can be considered world leading due to their multifaceted approach against the disease. Australia was successful in educating all people while simultaneously researching ways to cure the disease. Australia made a concerted effort to fight the both the physical disease itself, as well as the social stigma associated with it.
It is believed that “ the emphasis on HIV testing and counseling without adequate access to clinical trials and appropriate therapy for AIDS evokes memories of the deliberate withholding of treatment by the researchers in the Tuskegee study” (p. 1504). Since there is no cure found to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS, the only way is to educate and inform the Black community, but in a way that will benefit
There was no cure. Magic Johnston was told he was going to die because of HIV, and he even quit basketball because of it and lived in fear. But look at him now. He 's still alive and still has HIV. The reason people hid from Magic was that they were told one thing, that at the time they didn 't know if it was true or not.
There are drugs such as Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for persons at high risk for HIV take medicine to decrease chances of getting infected. PrEP is also famous from stopping HIV from taking hold and spreading throughout your body. It is highly effective for patients with HIV, however, they must take their medicine consistently. Nevertheless, the average HIV patient can live their lives long and successfully, this is all coming from research made to help defeat HIV. The more research that comes along with looking for a cure, it makes patients look at a new hope and making their lives a lot
HIV is transmitted through exchanges of bodily fluids via blood, semen, vaginal secretions and breast milk. Behaviors that promote risk to transmit HIV are unprotected anal and vaginal sex, sharing needles- injection drug use, piercing/ tattooing, insulin, hormone and vitamin shot, acupuncture and breastfeeding. Airborne, dermal, saliva exchange and other casual contacts with an HIV-positive person have been proven as
