Describe brain injuries that are: Mild – Mild brain injuries can be reversible and the individual may make a full recovery. The individual may not have acquired loss of consciousness or only lose consciousness for no more than a few minutes. They may receive rehab and physio treatment that can correct their injury to improve their well-being. Moderate – The individual will lose consciousness for longer periods of time and may need longer to recover. Some symptoms may stay with the individual and they may not recover from them. Severe – The individual will lose consciousness for more than 24 hours and may need life support machinery to help them breathe, the brain may starve from oxygen and cause injury. This can lead to loss of mobility, communication, talking and eating and drinking and may mean they become nil by mouth. Discuss initial effects of acquired brain injury on the individual The initial effects of acquired brain injury on the individual can upset, confuse, frustrate and anger them as they may struggle to focus, achieve, do and say things that they could easily before. Their cognitive, physical and emotional function will be altered and they will find it difficult and frustrating to adapt to. The individual may need help …show more content…
The individual may need support or assistance with weakness from limbs and walking, sitting, transferring, washing and bathing. They may need a wheelchair for a period of time or for the foreseeable future. They may acquire speech and communication difficulties. The individual may find it difficult to express themselves through facial expressions and body language. Although some people may acquire rehabilitation and physio treatment and make a full recovery or have physical effects that many individuals will not be able to recognise or know
Mike Cameron suffered from a brain injury August 11, 2005. The two outfielders Mike Cameron and Carlos Beltran, running at full speed, both dive after a fly ball and collided face first. Cameron was disabled because of multiple injuries and needed surgery to repair facial fractures. Beltran was diagnosed with a concussion and a minimally non-displaced fracture of a facial bone, which did not require surgery. He suffered temporary loss of vision and two broken
Simple concussions, which are mild and relatively common among children and adolescents, gradually resolve within a week to 10 days. As long as another head injury is not sustained, mild concussions usually do not result in complications or long-term health risks. Complex concussions, on the contrary, do result in tenacious symptoms and can affect brain function long term. The expansions risk for complications, such as swelling or bleeding in the brain, seizures, and post-concussion syndrome (e.g., persistent headache, dizziness, or blurred vision), is seen with complex concussions.
However, these injuries heal eventually with time and rest. They may set an athlete on the side lines for a period of their season (or in worst case scenarios a large chunk of their career), but these injuries more often than not result in a recovery and a glorious return to the playing field. While a concussion is very similar to these physical injuries in the sense that it requires time and rest to recover and will set an athlete out for a portion of his or her season (assuming an appropriate amount of time is given for the brain to heal), it differs from most physical injuries from the stand point that it has possible long term cognitive effects if repeated concussions are obtained. Obviously, dying or paralysis is the worst case scenario for a person who has received brain trauma. However, athletes that have sustained three or more concussions over a life-time have been proven to likely have long-term cognitive impairment, emotional struggles, and a general decrease in the overall quality of life.
Consequences of a concussion vary depending upon who has been injured. Cindy Weiss explained the long terms effects of a concussion ranging from behavioral changes, to mood disruptions, to cognitive skills like judgement and attention span. Loss of conciseness is not a good symptom to go off of that a brain injury has happened. Symptoms of a brain trauma also include dizziness, irritability, and possibly even depression. Article 4 talks about how girls are more vulnerable to concussions and how it effects them differently.
Injuries in sports are inevitable, and can range in complexity. We would never know how bad an injury is unless we get checked out by a license medical professional. But in some cases the injury might not be able to be seen by the naked eye. An injury that might not be able to be noticed is a concussion. A concussion can range from mild to severe and was never a major problem in football until the last decade.
The effects from having multiple traumatic brain injuries caused chronic headaches, vision problems, and body fatigue. The symptoms of post-concussive syndrome also began to have a significant impact on my education. Activities such as reading, completing homework assignments, and keeping my attention in class became increasingly difficult. The most unexpected aspect of living with this syndrome was that I could no longer play sports and the

Gomez was told by doctors she had lupus nephritis and that she would be needing a kidney transplant. Luckily her friend, the star of ‘Secret Life of the American Teenager”, Francia Raisa, donated a kidney to her. “Not everyone is lucky enough to have a donor.”
Many think that a concussion is a slight injury that keeps us out of physical activity for a couple weeks, but it is truly so much more than. Concussions are one of the most serious injuries a person can encounter. It is classified as a mild traumatic brain injury, and it is also one of the most common injuries. Even a mild blow to the head can result in many consequences. Most of these concussions are caused from playing sports, and football is the number one cause.
(2004), Vigué et al. (2011)]. As the physiologic mechanisms against ischemia in cerebral tissue are impaired, the traumatized brain become highly vulnerable to ischemic injuries, these ischemic injuries, even for a few minutes, have a dramatic negative impact on long-term outcomes. Thus, prediction of outcomes is urgently needed. The primary aim of managing patients with acute brain injury is to minimize secondary injury by maintaining cerebral perfusion and oxygenation.
A Cerebrovascular accident, a brain attack, or more commonly known as a Stroke, is the most common disabling neurological disorder (Aminoff, Greenberg and Simon, 2015), which affects 1.8% of the Australian population, this is an estimated 264,900 people(Abs.gov.au, 2015) . The World Health Organisation (World Health Organisation, 2015) states that a stroke is an “interruption of the blood supply to the brain, usually because a blood vessel bursts or is blocked by a clot. This cuts off the supply of oxygen and nutrients, causing damage to the brain tissue”, which can result in lasting brain damage, long-term disability, or even death. What makes a stroke so unique, is that the outcome of a stroke is different for every person. This essay
1.1 Describe the causes and effects of complex disabilities and conditions. Mental health issues ranging from the doubts and uncertainties have become a part of daily routine, towards serious long term situation which can be very complex for managing and having a diversifying impact on the overall live of the people. The usual child health leads to contribute towards overall development (Watson & Le Couteur, 2011). Therefore it is important to take special care of people with complex disability as they turn out to be sensitive enough about the situation and environment they are living in.
Renner could not walk, and she needed to learn again. She said that waking up after you have a head injury is a very distressing thing that a person can experience. You have certain tasks that you took for granted before that have now become difficult. In addition, some of the things that used to be your greatest strengths can turn into a huge weakness after a TBI.
They found out that the most effective treatment is allowing the injured teen just one to go days of quiet time until their symptoms are gone. The teen can slowly start returning to normal levels of activity, little by little. For most mild brain injuries, the recovery process takes a week to three weeks. Mood changes in their concussed children and math was most frequently cited as the greatest academic challenge. This is why their homework might be reduced and they may need to reschedule tests.
More now than ever athletes are being watched out for when there is trauma to the brain. After multiple cases of poor treatment to concussions parents and doctors are cracking down on letting concussions not be a big deal. As more studies advance, it is discovered that every case is different. The range is created by severity, past experience with trauma, and how the patient heals. Concussions in sports can range in severity, and how they affect each individual over time depending on times of impact.
Some suffer chronic pain due to over exertion; it contributes to depression, and causes a great deal of embarrassment and social anxiety. Some patients prefer to remain at home rather than go outside. Getting in and out of the wheelchair is difficult, and they sometimes need assistance going to the toilet. Wheelchair bound patients have also extra expenses;the home has to be adapted to the wheelchair, zero-step entries and door widths adequate for wheelchairs to pass through, and sometimes, especially the elderly, have to hire a live-in caregiver.
