As simple as it sounds, an email directly to a student makes this “presence” known and detailed feedback gives student the feeling of concern and compassion that a simple grade doesn’t provide. Ultimately it does come down to the student feeling important and utilizing social presence is a great way to provide this feeling. Also, sincere concern and passion for a student’s success helps solidify a social presence, regardless of being online or in a brick-and-mortar environment. When it comes to adult learners as well as younger learners, the need for engagement and social presence is a must. However, with adult learners being engaged in the class sets up the opportunity for a greater application of knowledge as they will feel more confident to ask questions related to life situations and their experience. With a social presence established you are able to help students think critically which also ties into experience which is greater in adult learners. Critical thinking is fundamental to the learning process and by guiding students to learn and think critically they can apply the learned skills better in their real life. Furthermore, critical thinking allows students to question so called experts and
Allowing kids to practice their social skills while also learning from each other helps them both academically and personally. It seems pretty obvious to me that connecting concepts and subject knowledge to critical thinking and engaging activities is one of the most beneficial (and fun!) ways to help our students
So the The focus of my education will be to utilize theories on adult learning and methods of long-term retention within the context of their preferred communication and learning styles. Much like the University of Minnesota utilizes voice-over PowerPoints and reading assignments to engage multiple senses and provide a framework for learning, I will provide various sources of content and structure according to cognitive and constructionist learning theories (10x10 with University). I will package my content in modules spread over several weeks, like the 10x10 program, in order to give the students time to fully absorb the information and begin to apply it to their work. Leading into the classes I will provide them with a big picture overview and open a discussion on the importance of learning this material in order to increase buy-in and engagement. A course such as this one is a source of collegiality; an atmosphere where students are able to collaborate, share ideas, and further one another’s understanding. This class not only encourages frequent discussion, but implements into the daily routine, allowing students to speak, listen, and learn. The Human Event promotes discussion, providing students with the opportunity to cultivate their own ideas into words and communicate these original interpretations clearly and effectively. This opportunity doesn’t just benefit the speaker, but also the listeners. When new ideas are shared, the group as a whole can advance their understanding.
It provides leadership skills, social skills, and helps build teamwork. You share your dreams and your goals and help each other achieve them and then you’re there for each other on bad days and you take care of each
For example, because my discourse is more of a family than a community it has taught me that: even though you will come across people that you don’t like or get along with you still need to treat them with respect. Also, that you will come across classes where you will have to work together, just like in stage crew and there is more than one way to get your work done. Secondly, when in groups or having to deal with other individuals, they are human beings and will be different from you. But you cannot let other students walk all over you; and if you need to talk to a teacher it has taught me how to be assertive in my needs and wants. Without this skill, school would be much more difficult because without communication skills, you will fail.
Dr. Jane Vella devoted her life to creating and developing the Dialogue Education ™ approach to adult education. Dr. Vella received her understanding on the adult learning principles from her more than 50 years experience as an educator in many countries in Africa, Asia and the Americas. She also used the principle of Dialogue Education in her doctoral research at the University of Massachusetts and wrote several popular books on this subject. She founded Global Learning Partners (GLP) to develop a network of practitioners of Dialogue Education approach (Core Group 2012). On January 10, 2018, I participated in a school professional development focused on AIG training and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Staff were grouped in grade level teams and were trained in best practices to use with teaching Gifted Students and incorporating these practices into our lessons and classroom culture. Our PBIS training consisted of reviewing how to use the PBIS lessons provided by the PBIS team for each grade level within the classroom.
