Colonial America’s democracy was a work in progress with democratic and undemocratic features. With features like Individual and Human Rights, Equality, and Limited Government, colonial America was continuously finding new ways to govern a new society. While, some of their strategies were undemocratic and cruel, they realized and fixed it with democratic solutions. Their efforts were enormous, and created the free land of colonial America.

In Colonial America, during the 1600’s and 1700’s, there were religious, political and geographical changes which resulted in democratic and undemocratic changes. Religion had a big impact on Colonial America. Maryland had to pass the Act of Toleration because too many people were not able to exercise their religion freely. (document 1) The act stated that nobody in Maryland who exercises their religion will be embarrassed and is free to do so willingly, however this act only applied to Christians.

The Public Sphere The public sphere is a part of social life in which, during the eighteenth century, colonist came together to discuss politics, making a more tranquil government, and economic interests (Foner 149). The colonist participated by voting, joining and creating assemblies, and forming political clubs. There were many differences over politics and policies, however they hardly ever produced civil disorder (Foner 149). Due to the public sphere colonist could come together and resolve problems.

When explorers first voyaged west, new towns sprouted in North America such as; Jamestown, Virginia and Plymouth, Massachusetts. These towns set laws and rights in which to obey on their long trip to the Americas. Eventually in the course of history the thirteen American Colonies we controlled by the English. Problems in America only grew worse when democracy was being added to the mixture of already complicated politics. In Woody Holton’s book, Unruly American and the Origins of the Constitution, he stated that, “many Americans. . . were growing ‘tired of an excess of democracy,’ a ‘prevailing rage of excessive democracy. . .’ [or] ‘democratical tyranny.’” Democracy was an attempt at home rule among the colonies, but not everyone was happy with this extreme excess of colonial citizens contribution to the government.

Andrew Jackson was a wild, energetic president that had the will and stability to make the United States a stronger, and more unified nation. A good democracy, in general, requires equal rights, an educated and strong leader, peace, stability, checks and balances, voting rights, and power in the hands of the people. Having a good and strong democracy also requires leadership of the people, and for them to stand up for their rights. This Ideal allows everyone a chance to vote for their nations leaders and for laws to be passed and or established. The colonists did not have a democracy at first but over the years as they started to despise having a monarchy they established that the countries people should all have a fair say in the government.
