Dehumanization In Night By Elie Wiesel

“The Hungarian police burst into every Jewish home in town: a Jew was henceforth forbidden to own gold, jewelry, or any valuables”(p10 & 11).This memoir is discussing about the dehumanization of Jews by a man named Elie Wiesel who has survived the holocaust. The process of getting rid of Jews began in 1944 starting by grabbing any valuables Jews have and forcing them to wear stars on them. When Jews don’t have any valuables and making them wear the stars , the Jews can’t buy anything showing that Jews are weak and poor and they are just people that should not be in this world. “The yellow star? Within Elie Wiesel’s memoir, Night, there are many important quotes. Although that is true, there is one that sticks out the most. On page 115 of the book, Wiesel states, “From the depths of the mirror, a corpse was contemplating me. The look in his eyes as he gazed at me has never left me” (Wiesel 115). This quote truly displays the theme of dehumanization portrayed by Wiesel.

“What if your life was just taken away?” Well in the memoir “ Night” by Elie Wiesel published in 1956. This memoir is about a Jewish kid, Eliezer, who is taken by the Nazi with his family. He witnesses the death of his family and others. Now is taken to this journey to survival.

“Meir Katz was moaning: Why don't they just shoot us now?” (Wiesel 103). This shows how the harsh conditions and punishment of the Nazi officers dehumanize the jewish prisoners in concentration camps. It is the process of dehumanization that made possible the evils of the Holocaust and makes possible the smaller evils that occur on a daily basis. The Nazi guards, as revealed in the Elie Wiesel memoir, Night, were able to victimize their prisoners because the process of dehumanization desensitized them to the evils they inflicted.

For all he knew, his father was the only person he had besides him in the camps, and by losing him, he would lose all hope and give in. Elie himself feared being left alone, and without his father, he would be left to his own devices. This moment in time illustrates how his father would give him resilience, as he was the only one Elie had left (at the time) who would provide him hope, aid, and support throughout their stay. This is one of the very first actions in which Elie hints that his father will be his driving motivation to keep pushing for survival, which we see later throughout the book. We see such a demonstration when Nazi officers had mistaken his (Elie’s) father as dead.

The memoir Night, was written by an empathetic, kind and faithful man named Eliezel Wiesel. We can identify him as a Romanian Jew who lived through the Holocaust and shares his experience to those who are willing to listen. The identity of the Jewish community was lost in the darkness, as discrimination and dehumanization became a threat. Eliezel and his family face ego deaths as the silence of God makes them question who they are as a whole. Wiesel exemplifies how extreme situations challenge one's identity and makes them lose sight of their humanity.

The book Night was written by Elie Wiesel and published on January 1, 1956. It is about Wiesel's holocaust experiences with his father in the concentration camps in Auschwitz and Buchenwald. Throughout this story Wiesel and his father go through dehumanizing experiences and lose their faith and humanity along the way. He shares his story and survival as a teenager being taken away from home and threw into the torturous camps which he had to fight for his life. Night is written as a personal narrative that allows us to see his view of the darkness, suffering, silence, and identity that he experienced.

All Jews, as a race were brutalized by the Nazis amid this time; lessening them to no not as much as articles, positions which made no difference to them, things that were an aggravation. Nazis would accumulate each Jew that they could discover and convey them to these infernos, isolating the men and ladies. Families, not knowing it could never observe each other again. People inside the classifications were separated much more, in view of their well being, quality, and age.

In the memoir, “Night” is the story of a Jewish boy who experiences and lives through the Holocaust. Dehumanization is the process by which the Nazis gradually reduce the Jews to little more than “things” which could easily be gotten rid of in terrible with no remorse. Throughout this memoir one way Jews were dehumanized was by being treated with cruelty. The Jews were forced to watch their family members, friends, & own kind slowly die.
