Deception In Miller's Tale

Is manipulation key for personal advancement or simply a selfish act of destruction? Artifice is nothing new, used in times such as the Salem witch trials, and even dates back to even later. Though the strategy is not dead, but can also be seen more recently amongst individuals, including our President Donald Trump. Artifice can be used differently between people, while their motives may be the incentive of personal gains such as revenge or popularity, while the results of using artifice, may vary. However no matter how it is adopted, the reason behind it, and/or the outcomes artifice should not be used.

The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a dramatic play which portraits the Salem Witch Trials in the Province of Massachusetts Bay. Throughout the story the main characters participate in a name game trying to clear their names from accusations of witchcraft. In the end an innocent man takes blame for the issue that arose in the town. As a result of him coming forward, he was hung for his actions. Honesty is the most lacking factor in the character’s lives.

Honesty is something we all want. Honesty describes person’s nature and builds more trust. Abigail gets affected by the witch craft and they try to find who is behind all of this. Honesty is a key to describe your nature. The crucible has a really unique story.

In Act III of the Crucible many of the characters feel compelled through desperation to lie because they feel like that is the only way to get the people they care about out of trouble. Since this whole thing started from a lie, whether it was a lie to God about adultery or a lie to get out of trouble when doing witchcraft. All the problems seem to be coming from Abigail. Mary warren had to lie because Abigail threatened her in Act I, Abigail said if you tell anyone what we were really doing ill hurt you. So Mary lied about it how she isn’t hurting Abigail through the bird at first and whenever she realized if she didn’t do anything then she was going to be killed.

The Crucible by Arthur Miller has many lessons to learn from. One of The major lesson I thought that is important is honesty. The accusations throughout the story were built on lies from those trying to protect their own name, and putting the town into confusion. Nobody in Salem, Massachusetts felt like they could trust anymore, after all of the false allegations made. If Three characters in the story would have been honest from the beginning, the town would not have been in such confusion.

The Crucible was written in 1952 by Arthur Miller, the play delivers many messages and carries many themes throughout. Nearly every character in the play is put to the test to display an act of courage, weakness, or truth. Some characters lack these traits and never learn to have courage or display honesty. However, most characters are very courageous and demonstrate these acts throughout the whole play. Overall the theme of the The Crucible boils down to being about honesty, weakness, and courage.

Millions of people are in unhealthy relationships, which can be identified in certain ways. In the tragedy, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor, and his wife, Elizabeth Proctor have issues in their marriage. John has an affair with a girl named Abigail Williams while Elizabeth is sick. As a result, this breaks her trust in him, making her come off as cold and reserved. The nature of John and Elizabeth’s relationship is unhealthy because their words and actions towards each other reveal a sense of hostility, mistrust, and lack of affection.

A major theme in The Crucible is the deception of falsehood and honesty. A character that is a prime example is Abigail Williams. Through the book Abigail shows several layers of lies and deception to protect herself. Abigail has a rather tough life because both of her parents died when she was young and ever since she has worked as a servant in several households. Abigail has a strong hold on several people throughout the story which is why she has so much power over the town of Salem.

In The Miller’s Tale, a chapter in The Canterbury Tales, by Geoffrey Chaucer, women are dependent on men, and described as weak, and submissive. As a result, Chaucer portrays women as mere objects that can be possessed. Chaucer describes women as delicate beings. In “The Miller’s Tale,” when the Miller describes Allison, he talks about her personality:

If you have to be in a “crummy “ place where “sick “ people are and you are not comfortable with why don't you leave. but he can't cause he’s sick as well.

In Geoffrey Chaucer’s “The Miller’s Tale” he uses symbolism as a literary element to create an underlying Christian theme that portrays the characters in the story as biblical figures. Each character of the story represents a different figure from the bible such as, Nicholas and Alisoun representing Adam and Eve, John the carpenter representing a Great Divine and Absolon representing The Devil. Throughout the story, there are many different aspects that highlight the Christian theme and allow the readers to truly see this interpretation. Throughout the story readers may recognize the alignment between Nicholas and Alisoun and Adam and Eve.
