Death Penalty Is Dead Wrong Summary

There were almost whole the chiefs take stock of ranked the death penalty last among their priorities for crime fighting, that they did not accept based on murder rates that it deterred against homicides. In the many years the law was on books, no death sentences were upheld by its court nor was any offender executed.” She states on that other hand, “New Mexico get rid of its death penalty in 2009.”

Scott Turow is the author of The Ultimate Punishment: A Lawyer's Reflections on dealing with the Death Penalty, published in 2003. Turow has written a series of nonfiction books reflecting current affairs and the legal system. Most importantly, is that Turow is an attorney who has prosecuted as well as defended clients in death penalty cases (Turow,2003). Turow describes his experience with death penalty cases and his work examining the death penalty process, while not precisely a supporter or detractor of the death penalty, his reflections are discussed in his work.

In Edward Koch’s essay he argues that the death penalty can prevent murders and affirm life. Koch begins his counter argument by addressing the issue of the death penalty being barbaric; he argues that while it may not be the most pleasant way to lower the murder rate it is necessary in order to achieve that goal. Since no other major democracy has a murder rate as high as the United States, the death penalty is necessary for lowering it and eliminating the issue of multiple murders. There have been many cases of murders committing the crime again, so if capital punishment was enacted murderers would never get the chance to kill again. In his article “To Kill or Not to Kill”, Scott Turow tries to convince the audience advocating the capital-punishment system in Illinois to inspect its fairness and efficacy. He tackles this issue because he provides that the system is defective. Even though he goes back and forth from favoring the capital punishment issue to rejecting it, he clearly states his penalty opposition, supporting it with powerful examples, factual data, and a metaphor. To appear moral, credible, and knowledgeable, the author uses his scholarly tone, demonstrating his respectable position. He, as a lawyer and “one… members of a commission appointed by Governor”, had to present his position on the law during the reforms of the capital punishment system in Illinois.

Furthermore, death row is just a small fraction of the criminal justice system and can not be based on that alone. Capital punishment, or the death penalty, is a legal process in which a person is put to death as a punishment for a crime by the government of a nation. The United States is in the minority group of nations that uses the death penalty. There are thirty-three states that allow capital punishment and seventeen states that abolished it (Death Penalty Information Center). The morality of the death penalty has been debated for many years. Some people want capital punishment to be abolished due to how it can cost a lot more than life imprisonment without parole, how they think it is immoral to kill, and how innocent people can be put to death.

Support for capital punishment requires valuing retribution over rehabilitation. Those who favor capital punishment value highly the closure it provides to the families of the victims, and they believe that it deters would be murderers from killing. The Death Penalty, loss of life due to previous crimes and actions, is believed by some to be extremely costly, inhumane, and cruel unlike some others whom believe it is just, right, and provides closure. The Death Penalty is not a quick and easy process. Most who get sentenced to deaths row wait years for their ultimate punishment of death. Some believe that it is not right to punish and kill a human for actions they have done because, they believe that the inmate should have another chance. Then others believe that it is right to punish someone for their actions especially if their actions involve killing another or multiple humans.

I will now introduce the fading of humanity. People suggest and would like that death penalty should still exist. They think about safety. They think about how they will feel safe if a murder is executed. They do not think that they vote for violation of the human rights.

Daniel Frank was the first person to be legally executed, he was sentenced to death for theft. (Michael Par. 7). Being executed for theft really was extreme, and the government later made the execution method to be used for more grave crimes. Many states years after decided to abolish capital punishment, and eventually legalized it again. Though execution has been considered inhuman, it did lower the crime rates for the crimes that would be categorized for execution.
