Romeo and Juliet Essay Why does death happen so much in Romeo and Juliet and how does it contribute to the story? Romeo and Juliet is a Shakespearean tragedy about two star-crossed lovers whose love leads to their death and the end of their family feud. The suicide of Romeo and Juliet and other deaths throughout the play symbolize death in this Shakespearean tragedy. Romeo and Juliet’s love for each other caused death to not only them but the people they loved. Death was a symbol of Romeo and Juliet because the deaths caused by the feud made it harder for Romeo and Juliet to be together, every death added to the overall mood of the tragedy, and the deaths of loved ones caused Romeo and Juliet to be foolish and make impulsive decisions. “BENVOLIO: O Romeo, Romeo, brave Mercutio is dead!” (Shakespeare 3.1.110). Mercutio’s death added to the overall tragedy because he was Romeo’s best friend who was brutally murdered by Tybalt, a Capulet. Romeo murdering Tybalt changed Romeo tremendously because he had taken someone's life. Not only did Romeo change, Juliet changed as well because Romeo killed her cousin so she was saddened from the death. These deaths were very important mood shifters in the story. “JULIET: My husband lives, that Tybalt would have slain; And Tybalt’s dead, that would have slain my husband.” (Shakespeare 3.2.105). Juliet couldn’t see Romeo after he was banished from Verona for killing Tybalt which caused their relationship to be more complicated. This death caused Romeo and Juliet to be apart, ultimately causing the deaths of the star-crossed lovers. This death added to the overall mood of the story, was an impulsive decision by Romeo to kill him, and caused Romeo and Juliet to be apart. The death of Tybalt not only caused Romeo’s banishment but Juliet’s marriage to Paris. Throughout the play, we see multiple deaths caused by the feud which makes it harder for Romeo and Juliet to be together.
