The Kennedy administration would give it another try in 1961 and 1962 with Operation Mongoose which would even further put strain on the United States and Cuban relationship. During the one year period Operation Mongoose and the Cuban Missile Crisis would take center stage. It was brought to the attention of the administration by way of a U-2 spy plane that the Soviet Union was supplying materials and constructing nuclear missile sites on the island of Cuba. The Cold War, the second-longest war in US history, was a war between the US and the USSR, which was, ironically enough, caused somewhat by the end of World War II. At this point, the US and USSR had become two of the most significant world powers, with the USSR trying to spread communism, and the US trying to contain it. It was called the Cold War because neither side actually declared a state of war between the two sides, they just attempted to prevent the other from spreading their political influence around the globe. Some historians believe the Cold War was inevitable because of the hostilities from both America and the Soviet Union after World War II. America believed that the USSR was an expansionist country trying to spread an evil, communistic idea throughout the world. Although the countries never directly fought against each other, as they only fought in proxy wars, there was still extreme conflict. The United States responded to the Soviets actions in Germany, Europe, and their national actions. These responses were justifiable, or so many Americans at the time believed.

As the Britannica Encyclopedia states,“The failure of the Bay of Pigs invasion made Kennedy appear weak, inexperienced, indecisive, and the Soviet Premier, Nikita Khrushchev, tried to capitalize on the youthful American president’s failings. Four months after the invasion Khrushchev began building the Wall to divide Communist East Berlin from West Berlin. Less than a year later Khrushchev and Castro planned to install nuclear missiles on the island of Cuba—only ninety miles from the United States—a decision that precipitated the Cuban Missile Crisis and brought the world to the brink of nuclear war.” Additionally, the Office of the Historian states, “The failed invasion strengthened the position of Castro’s administration, which proceeded to openly proclaim its intention to adopt socialism and pursue closer ties with the Soviet Union.”

The Cold War was basically an economic conflict, where the United States and the Soviet Union had economic stability and political tendencies. It wasn’t a military conflict where both sides of armed men killed and fought for their country, but a “contest about values”. Their values differed from each other, which created tensions between both countries. President Harry Truman wanted to build the world as a freedom and democracy economy while Stalin wanted the world under communism. So, the objective was to stop communism from spreading.

The war started because the U.S wanted to contain the spread of communism.” Most American officials agreed that the best defense against the Soviet threat was a strategy called “containment.” The U.S allowed communism to exist but was not going to let it spread to any other country. The reason why it was called the cold war was because the U.S and the Soviet Union never directly fought, there were other wars that the U.S fought in like the Vietnam war. There was mainly only two countries’ that where involved in the cold war Russia and the U.S. Within the U.S there was something going on that was called the “Red Scare”.

During the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis took place. It was when two superpowers were close to causing a nuclear war. Its main origin was when the United States invaded Cuba, on April 10, 1961; which is also known as the Bay of Pigs invasion. After the invasion, previous Prime Minister; Fidel Castro of Cuba, was ‘paranoid’ because he felt like America was planning another attack. So in order to protect his nation, he sought military and economic help from the Soviet Union.

The Cold War was a very significant period of time in the history of the world. The two Superpowers, USSR and the United States of America, were in the battlefield of ideology representing Socialism and Capitalism respectively. One of the most crucial conflicts in this Nuclear Arms Race was the Cuban Missile Crisis; in fact, it was the closest that the two sides ever got to the nuclear annihilation of the entire human species. As per the Monroe Doctrine of 1823, all the Americas would eventually be under the United States of America, and this supposedly justified the Bay of Pigs invasion by the U.S. to overthrow Castro, and return Capitalism to the nation. In consequence to this threatening attack of the U.S. Castro approached Khrushchev for economic and military support to stand up against Kennedy.

The Cold War was a totally different war from the previous wars, a lot of disputes on the system of ideas and ideals, especially one that forms the basis of economic or political theory and policy (dictionary), which is basically ideologies, and even religious thoughts, all of this put into a war were two of the most powerful countries had moments of tension, on who was the one, making the first move to fight with firearms or bombs. The Cold War is a state of political hostility between countries characterized by threats, propaganda, and other measures short of open warfare, in particular.(cold ). This cold war was a conflict between the most powerful countries during this time.

The Cold War was a conflict between the USSR and the U.S. that lasted for decades. The Cold War was named cold because of the shortage of actual fighting. However, this is extremely inaccurate because there was an abundance of fighting, from Vietnam to Korea to Afghanistan. In simple terms, the Cold War started by growing out of World War II. When the U.S. supported western Europe and the Soviets had control over eastern Europe.

The Cold War was a time of fear in the world. World War II had just ended and the nations should have learned their lessons and the consequences that result from war. Though everything should have been peaceful, this was not the case in actuality. The US feared communist states such as the Soviet Union, and China, while they feared democracy. The sides were split and wanted to abolish the other's government in fear that their country would soon become like the other.

Despite not being a direct war, the Cold War is one of the longest and most high-stakes conflicts our nation has seen. It brought the world to the brink of destruction with fears of all-out nuclear war. The Cold War began at the tail end of World War II, with the United States and the Soviet Union clashing over economic policies. The U.S. feared the spread of communism, as American politicians believed it was a “threat to the democratic world”. Conversely, the USSR opposed a capitalistic system spreading throughout Europe.
