The American Historian and Diplomat George Kennan once said that “The very concept of history implies the scholar and the reader. Without a generation of civilized people to study history, to preserve its records, to absorb its lessons and relate them to its own problems, history, too, would lose its meaning.” Humans must heavily analyze the past via themes when reviewing sources in order to understand the past through our ancestors eyes. This is why the themes of the 3Cs, Change, Comparison and Connection are fundamental. Connection must be considered due to the way countries can affect each other, such as the way the Industrial Revolution had a widespread impact across the world. Secondly, sources can often create a strong comparison …show more content…
Though the comparison between two countries has a weakness in the way it can be mistaken for connection. Comparison is more of the differences and similarities between two countries, as opposed to the impact that the countries have on each other. One very obvious comparison between two countries lies in the depiction of Western society penetrating that of the Japanese civilization. Visual Source 19.2 shows Japanese women dressed in European styled dresses, and engaging activities typically normal to the European elite such as playing a violin, or playing the piano. The Japanese incorporation of the West is very different from the Chinese who believed they were self-sufficient and did not need European aid. In Document 19.4, Sun Yat-Sen certainly saw no need to incorporate American ideas of government in his new form of government he wanted. Sun said that the “members of America’s House of Representatives have often been foolish and ignorant people who have made history quite ridiculous” (965). This is a strong example of the comparison between a western incorporating Japan, and an exclusive China that preferred to avoid western …show more content…
Connection helps to see how other countries affected each other. In the case of China, some connections were made to Russia. Although the connection to Russia was not very strong, it proved that connections could be made between countries that seem distant. Comparison, sometimes mixed up with Connection, helps readers to see the differences and similarities between two countries. China and Japan, were alike in the way that they were both being pressured by the West, but the Chinese refused to assimilate into European culture. The Japanese, however, allowed Western civilization to be incorporated into their society. Change, one of the most important themes when looking at history, helps readers to see how far the human race has come in terms of government and industrial advances. The Japanese were a prime example of this, due to the way they quickly developed into an advanced powerhouse that would become a force to be reckoned with coming into the twentieth century. The 3Cs are important when considering historical documents because without the basic themes, it would be difficult to analyze history
On Friday night, the annual Ely TIgers vs. DIllard Panthers football game was played. On the last play of the 4th quarter, Donnell Wilson made a touchdown pass that won the game. Although some say that the catch was not that great, I think it was due to the fact that he passed his defensive back, leaped to make the catch, and scored the winning touchdown. Part of what made this a great catch was Donnell leaping into the air to catch it. “Wilson made a leaping catch and landed safely in the end-zone capping an improbable come from behind win for the Tigers.”
Valley Forge Document Based Question After a detailed analysis of the documents, it is very clear that if I was a soldier in the continental army I would stay in the army for the following important reasons: first, the urgent need of healthy and strong soldiers to fight against the British (Document A and Document C), second, the visit of the Congressional committee and hope for support (Document B and External Source 1) and finally, the last reason I would stay in the army because of Paine’s great words and I wouldn’t want to be a summer soldier (Document D and External Source 2). During the American Revolution, it is very important to notice that in the town of Valley Forge the illness and death estimates increased. This resulted in a rapid decrease of the total amount of soldier in the town. According to the statistics in Document A, it is very clear that the total number of soldier enrolled in the Valley Forge camp decreased in a period of approximately three months.
I have choose two cities, San Francisco and Detroit. those two city seems not having similarity in our society and history of America. But there is one similarity within two cities; if Detroit begins the industrialization in economical history perspective, San Francisco begins new waves in our life and history with software and computer technology. however, in order to identity and analyze them into various ways, chronological process and base on that, events and impact on each city demonstrates how they affect on these two cities internally and externally in economic, politic, and social perspective ways.
The source is stating that a country is at it’s best when the individual is allowed to express themselves in a way that is free from government control. In doing this it allows for a society that is reflective of the individual rather than the government. When society is based on the individual, government interference will be lessened because the need for it will no longer be prevalent to society. This source is for classical liberalism and reflects the ideologies of philosopher Adam Smith who was strictly for individual benefit and limited government control. Based on historical events it is wrong to have lessened government control because it can lead to civil unrest and lack of authority.
In the historical text, Before European Hegemony, Janet L. Abu-Lughod unravels many themes as she tries to unveil the shaping of the world system between the 13th and 16th century. Two main themes that thread throughout the book and its entirety are the development of trade and that all participants in the world system merely had regional influence because they were interdependent societies. Technical, political and social advancements in many states and cities allowed them to flourish, including cities of the Champagne Fairs, Bruges and Ghent, Genoa and Venice and more. China participated in the advancement of trade and with their size and resources were on their way to global hegemony but chose not to. The development of each location caused them to prosper but their power only reigned throughout their sphere of influence and hardly expanded.
For example, in China, individual families as well as lists of emperors are recorded throughout all dynastic changes. By taking note of those who pass and those who come to be, the individual is recording the history of the culture. It can also be claimed that individual persons invent certain technologies that start a change to the known world surrounding them. From the invention of cotton farms to the first ideas of war strategy, an individual person or family can be the beginning of something grand, a new way of life. Finally, it can also be argued that war lords and generals bring about the conquest and beginning of new territories as well as civilizations.
The world must evolve to an international age in which we make comparisons on global connections which in the long run will be
Japan Rising explains how the economic status of citizens was in World War II. Due to a post-war constitution, the military during the time period encountered an epidemic that was detrimental to the military. During this time frame, other people would view Japan as a tradition-bound country because of their customs or beliefs they had. But as Kenneth Pyle pointed out, looks can be deceiving when you see it for yourself in person. Kenneth Pyle has done the unobtainable.
In the late nineteenth century, farmers faced problems that they saw as threats to the lifestyle they lived. Monopolies, trusts, railroads, money shortages and distribution of silver were the reasons why these agrarian people were discontent, and they had the right to complain about any of these things. Although some may say that the complaints made by these agrarians are not valid, farmers did indeed have their fair share of problems. As a result of these problems, the Populist Party which was made up of farmers arose because of reasons that the farmers thought caused agricultural decline, giving valid reasons to be discontent and not happy with the unfairness they had to go through in an unprotected world market.
Also the wars and the politics could have attributed to the slowness of technology advance. When the wars are going on and politics are arguing there is a lower amount of technology, due to men going to war to fight and the focus on
Throughout the history of western civilization there have been a vast number of changes that have occurred and wars that have formed civilization today. There have been economic changes, relating to the development of the economy and the financial state of society. There have been political changes, dealing with shifts in government and power. There have been social changes, affecting the organization of society and the interpersonal and international relations. All of these events have influenced society and molded it into what it is today.
Pailey Wang: China, Japan and the Western World during the 19th Century. At the beginning of the 19th Century, China and Japan faced very similar set of circumstances in relation to their respective relationships with the West. Both nations had isolationist policies, which saw Western trade operate through a one port system. In the face of rapid technological advancement and industrialisation in the West, both nations were forced to open to trade, and sign unequal treaties in the face of a new imperial Western military might.
Globalization, historical and contemporary is a very open concept. Many sides are argued when it comes to globalization when it began, what it has caused and if it is positive or negative on society. All these views make it a difficult concept to discuss because there are so many sides it can be seen from and it is very difficult to find facts because not everyone agrees. Due to the fact that globalization is such an open idea it does allow people to present their own opinion on the matter making all of the material within globalization very exciting to learn about.
In his comparison between Japan and the West, Fukuzawa saw
I mostly agree to some extent that the ‘Reform and Revolution’ was a real reform and that there had been numerous successes. However, I realized that it was not a full reform and revolution due to a few minor obstacles that had not been settled during that period (1911-1937). In the book “New Horizons: History”, Wong points out, “After the establishment of the Nanjing government, a series of reforms were carried out in hopes of modernizing China politically, economically, militarily, and culturally to realize Sun Yat Sen’s dream of reconstructing China.” The fundamental thought of the Reform was to bring to fruition “Sun Yat Sen’s dream of reconstructing China” (New Horizon: History) which was to modernize China in different extents.
