According to our book, the American System is an economic plan based on the idea that the federal government should encourage economic enterprise. The American System was stemmed from young Democratic-Republican who falsely supported Jefferson 's idea of a small federal government but actually preferred a large government. The goal of the new American System was to assist the united States in becoming self-sufficient economically, while spurring massive market growth throughout the nation. The leaders of this group were Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun. South Carolina believed they had the right to declare which federal laws were illegal. Jackson strongly believed that in giving states the right to declare which federal laws were illegal would cause chaos. The Tariff of 1828 or the “Tariff of Abominations,” was passed in order to protect the economy/industry of the North by increasing the price of European goods. With this tariff in place, Southerners were forced to look inward for business. Denied the right to decide which federal laws are illegal, South Carolina threatened secession.

The Tariff of 1828 was put in place to benefit the north and west involved with agriculture as it taxed imported goods, however it poorly impacted the southern states which gained most of its profit via these goods as it increased all the expenses due to this tariff. John C.
