As a college educated individual it’s rather difficult to identify with a pair of guppies that aren’t aware of the liquid that surrounds them. Yet David Foster Wallace chooses to make the comparison in the beginning of his 2005 Kenyon Commencement Address. Wallace chooses to retell parabolist stories and uses his extensive knowledge of the average day to day routine to support the idea that we are self-centered by nature. However, he also uses well supported logical appeals to identify the solution to our nature.

Wallace mentions suicide in the line, “And the truth is that most of these suicides are actually dead long before they pull the trigger.” A simple google search can revivel that suicidal thoughts were a very real stuggle in his life, but that shouldn’t discount everything he has ever done. If anything his struggles in life should give him more credibility, because the only way to truly understand something is the experience it first hand. In the line, “Our own present culture has harnessed these forces in ways that have yielded extraordinary wealth and comfort and personal freedom,” he focuses on all the good thing American culture offers. Wallace through this ostensibly clear-cut subject matter emerged to tackle archival connections. For example, the stretch, where the festival happens, the situation of driving into the festival and much more. When he described that lobster was once food that even prisoners were protected from, it was clear he felt the lobster was disgusting to eat. White abolitionist, Wendell Phillips, in his speech spoken near the beginning of the civil war, expresses his appreciation towards Toussaint-Louverture, but also explains the importance of allowing African Americans to willingly join their army. Phillips’s purpose is to show that utilizing African Americans willingly, and not forcefully, would be useful. He expresses an appreciative tone because he know other countries and states are listening, so he wants to be respectful yet grateful for his opportunity to be heard. Phillips begins his speech with historical comparisons.
In the article “How I Discovered the Truth about Poverty” Barbara Ehrenreich gives her view in poverty and explains why she think Michael Harington’s book “The Other American” gives a wrong view on poverty. She explained that Harrington believes that the poor thought and felt differently and what divides the poor was their different “culture of poverty.” Ehrenreich goes on to explain on how the book that became a best seller caused so many bad stereotypes on the poor that by the Reagan era poverty was seen as “bad attitudes” and “faulty lifestyles” and not by the lack of jobs or low paying jobs. And they also viewed the poor as “Dissolute, promiscuous, prone to addiction and crime, unable to “defer gratification,” or possibly even set an alarm clock.”
Wendell Phillips, a prominent white American abolitionist, gave an empowering and reverent speech regarding his admiration for former slave and Haitian general, Toussaint-Louverture. Phillips uses the power of figurative language and rhetorical devices to reveal an unmistakable abolitionist passion for African American rights, and attempts to ignite this enthusiasm into the hearts and minds of the audience through his zealous attitude. Phillips employs hyperbole, understatement, and metaphor to persuade the audience that the support of African American soldiers will be an influencing aspect in an impending American victory. The speech is rife with parallel structure and reference to historical allusions. This technique allows him to praise Toussaint-Louverture while also influencing and inspiring onlookers.

Johnson's purpose is to bring a feeling of peace within the American citizens and help them continue moving forward. He creates a nostalgic tone in order to convey a sense of sorrow and to resurface the dreams and aspirations oh John F. Kennedy in his audience. Johnson begins his speech by acknowledging that John F. Kennedy has been assassinated and reminds the Americans of Kennedy's aspiration by expressing his grief in the situation. In David Foster Wallace’s “ Kenyon Commencement Speech,” he discusses the importance of liberal arts education in “teaching you how to think” (Wallace, 199). He mentions how education is beyond the knowledge we learn, but about simple awareness will impact the choices we make for better or worse. The real value of education cannot be found in a career (you may or may not be fired from), but it can be found in the way you view things through a different perspective and by considering how other factors can contribute to everyday life. This new approach in thinking will allow us to appreciate our lives and overcome our inner “default setting” towards the world (Wallace, 199). I agree with Wallace’s argument because the purpose of higher education should not be about having career-specific skills and obtaining a degree, but about intellectual and personal growth will help us survive in the real world.
In the passage “What is poverty?”, the author Jo Goodwin Parker, describes a variety of things that she considers to portray the poverty in which she lives in. She seems to do this through her use of first-person point of view to deliver a view of poverty created by a focused use of rhetorical questions, metaphors, imagery, and repetition to fill her audience with a sense of empathy towards the poor. The author’s use of first person point of view creates the effect of knowing exactly what she is feeling. “The baby and I suffered on.
