Data Mining In Health Care

The real-world business situation that I will be addressing by collecting and analyzing a set of data is that of a Hospital, specifically that of the hospital staff and the patient safety interaction. I have chosen this specific business as it is my hope to utilize this degree to become a director at a local hospital. In Hospital’s there are so many aspects that one needs to look at. These aspects can be broken down into individual pieces of data that can be analyzed and provide a clear outlook of change.

Develop the concept/idea/issue you selected from your practice area into a relevant question This paper will evaluate and address issues surrounding never event in healthcare. In this regard, the guiding question for this analysis is, ‘How can never events be prevented in acute healthcare institutions?’ Describe the question According to Wilson and Giddens (2014), never events are adverse situations and serious medical errors that a patient should never experience.

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) sets security standards for safeguarding important patient health information that is being stored and maintained in analog and digital forms. As new technologies continue to facilitate the healthcare industry’s transition to paperless processes, health care providers, insurance companies, and other institutions are also growing increasingly dependent on electronic information systems to manage their HIPAA compliance programs. As a result, the safety and security of sensitive health data has become a major concern across the board. Security Risks and Challenges Today, health care professionals are using technology extensively in almost every aspect of the practice.

1- HIPAA Enforcement rule became stricter Because of the lack of compliance from many covered entities with HIPAA privacy and security rules, the enforcement rule is procreated. The Department of Health and Human Services HHS is given the power by the enforcement rule to look for any unauthorized access of PHI (Protected Health Information) in any covered entity against HIPAA Privacy rule. In the same time the enforcement rule gave The Department´s Office for Civil Rights the qualification to apply a criminal charge as penalties against HIPAA violation and for a person who commits an illegal act, who fail to introduce corrective measures within 30 days. 2007: CMS announced the deadline for compliance with the National Provider Identifier (NPI) It is mandated by HIPAA, that all health care providers use their NPI, which is an individual identification number, to identify themselves.

This can be measured by reviewing charts to ensure that required fields are documented and confirming that the information available is what was entered and can be traced back to the appropriate data entry point. As Jackson et al (2011) indicate, it is important to determine the needs of users, such as healthcare providers and patients, to make sure that they are receiving value from the system.

We need data standards and quality measures to verify the validity, reliability, completeness, and the timeliness of the data that is collected. Additionally, there needs to be standards that address how data is recorded to safeguard the consistency across multiple sources (ex. radiology, laboratory, patient and administration) in an organization. Importantly, data fields and their content need to be standardized, as well.

Therefore, security and protection is dictated by where the healthcare data is initiated within the healthcare delivery system. Futuristically, the concept of security and privacy is determined by where patient’s data begins which creates a huge question of how to protect data exchange since today’s healthcare is so patient centric. Presently, the healthcare community is promoting increased patient involvement in their care via technology such as patient portals. Furthermore, implementing HIPAA and HITECH can seem restrictive and cumbersome to the patient thereby creating opposing forces between two very important goals of the future healthcare system: increased patient involvement as well as increased healthcare information

Confidentiality and data breaches are a few of the main concerns, as many providers become neglectful when sharing patient electronic health information. Current use of Electronic Health Records (EHR) has proven to be helpful for hospitals and independent medical practice to provide efficient care for patients. Balestra reports that using computers to maintain patient health records and care reduces errors, and advances in health information technology are saving lives and reducing cost (Balestra, 2017). As technology advances EHR are going to continue to be the main method of record keeping among medical providers. Therefore, staff and medical providers need to be trained on how to properly share patients EHR safely and in a secure form in order to maintain patient confidentiality.

Computer-based algorithms provide patient-specific assistance. An early warning system that provides timely alerts designed to ensure that appropriate actions are initiated as soon as problems begin to develop. Four key applications have been developed to achieve these goals.
