As I read many of the essay in This I Believe edited by Jay Allison I felt like many of them related to my life, some more than others. Out of the many essays in This I Believe my favorite is “Remembering All the Boys” by Elvia Bautista. This is my favorite essay because her and I share many of the same beliefs and views on treating people with kindness and compassion no matter what wrong they’ve done to you or your family, which are core values my family instilled in me at a young age. At one point in her essay she says, “My brother was sixteen when he was shot by someone who liked red, who killed him because he liked blue”(17). “The Way Home” is a veterans memorial monument sculpted by Edd Hayes, and it is located in The Woodlands, Texas, in Town Green Park. This honorable monument is dedicated to all active duty and veterans of all military branches and conflicts. It allows individuals to honor family and friends who served in the Armed Forces. The monument is modeled after Zach R. Endsley, and Cory C. Kosters. Two young men who were residents of The Woodlands area and gave their lives in defense of freedom, while serving in the middle East in 2007.

The novel Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie by Jordan Sonnenblick is a story about a typical family in a present day town. Steven, the oldest kid in the family goes through a tough time in his life when his little brother Jeffrey gets leukemia, a type of cancer. Steven’s parents are also affected. The dad starts to not talk to Steven, and his co workers. The mom has to stop working and drive Jeffrey to the hospital often for treatments.

Have you ever felt like you don’t belong wherever you go? Have you ever felt like nothing is going your way? Lynda Mullaly Hunt, the author of One for the Murphys, intriguingly describes the life of a teenage foster child with many problems dealing with her foster family, her real family, and her friends. One for the Murphys is a story about a twelve-year-old foster child, living with a lovely foster family. After her mom went to the hospital for being abused by her step-dad, Carley’s life changed, from being a Las Vegas girl to becoming a Connecticut girl with a family she never knew existed.

Boyz in the Hood, directed by John Singleton, is a coming-of-age drama that takes place in South Central Los Angeles during the 1990s. The film is a powerful commentary on the intersection of race, poverty, and violence in urban America. The film follows the lives of three young African American men, Tre, Ricky, and Doughboy, as they navigate the challenges of growing up in a predominantly Black and Latino neighborhood. One of the movie's key themes is the impact of culture on communication, and how communication reflects, sustains, and changes cultural values.

For many of you, this will be your last race this season, so make it count!” Coach Guzmán announced during a whole team huddle behind the Sports Pavilion and next to the track at Tustin High School. This was the day before the race, the Empire League Finals, which determines which schools will move on to the CIF Southern Section Preliminaries, the Cross Country equivalent of the quarterfinals in other sports.

Daniel James Brown, the author of The Boys in the Boat, uses Joe Rantz’ story to symbolize the way America was able to find hope in a time of hopelessness and despair in the world-the Great Depression, and Nazi Germany. Joe Rantz was kicked out of his home at a very young age, even though he hadn’t done anything wrong. Joe’s mom, “Thula exploded in the face of what she saw a lax discipline... she would not live under the same roof as Joe...went back upstairs and told [Harry’s] only son he would have to move out of the house. Joe was ten” (Brown 36).

During summer while other kids were outside having fun, i was indoors with my AC on reading different kind of books because of a soccer injury i had. If it wasn 't for that injury i don 't think i would of ever gotten a book on my own. It all started with an injury to a book that became the book that kept me going to find more books to read. The book is called " A Child Called It: One Child 's Courage to Survive" by David Pelzer. Before this i thought all books were boring but this one totally changed my mind.

Daniel James Brown's The Boys in the Boat demonstrates that success in a team comes when it learn to work as one and sacrifice for the team. He also recognizes that one’s background or wealth doesn’t necessarily determine one’s success. Brown supports his stance proficiently by illustrating the team's struggles because of their background and the Great Depression and the team's successes in races. The book tells the story of the U.W. rowing team and its journey to winning the gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The story features Joe Rantz, who as an adolescent was abandoned by his parents, forced to fend for himself.

Wallence, David Foster, “This Is Water”. Kenyon College Commencement Speech, 2005. In “This is Water”, the author David Foster Wallance introduces the idea of people being concern of what is revolving around them, causing the individual to avoid the fact they are responsible of their own actions and thoughts. In the process, Wallance claims that people live their life the way they think they should, because it has come to a point that everything they do becomes a routine.

I read 2 very different books this summer. I read “Death Cloud” by Andrew Lane, and “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton. I enjoyed getting to know the character and their morals in the different books. Both book had very different time frames, very different neighborhoods, and very different people. I enjoyed getting to know the gang’s idea of family in “The Outsiders.”

A Christmas Carol is mainly about a old man named Ebenezer Scrooge who once had a partner named Jacob Marley, but after Marley died, Scrooge started to hate Christmas and was mean to everyone. One night, Scrooge saw Marley in his room and Marley said that Scrooge will be visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future. Finally, at the end Scrooge became nice and caring to prevent Tiny Tim (Scrooge’s worker, Mr. Cratchit, son) from dying, himself from dying, and the whole town becoming dark and dreadful. A Christmas Carol is a really good movie and book. Also, it gives you a sad, happy, and a scary mood.

What is determination one might ask? Well, determination is the power to overcome any difficulties, no matter how hard it is by putting one 's will and mind into it. All of these next stories are all prime examples of determination. Derek Redmond was favoured to win the 400m dash for the UK, but halfway through the race, his hamstring snapped which caused him terrible pain. Automatically, Derek tried to hop on one foot, but he was racked with misery with every step.
