How does Brian Friel show the topic of change in” Dancing at Lughnasa” and how well or badly do the characters handle it?
” Dancing at Lughnasa” is a play written by Brian Friel first published in 1990. In the play, Friel tells the story of Ireland as a whole through the story of a family living in Ballybeg, Donegal. The family consists of five sisters and their brother, as well as Michael. Michael is the son of one of the sisters, Christina, but more importantly the narrator of the story. The play is set in the summer of 1936. The first change mentioned in the book is the return of Father Jack. Father Jack is the oldest member of the Mundy family, a respected missionary priest, who has spent the last 25 years in Uganda. During his time in Uganda, he has absorbed the African religion and culture. Jack’s return affects greatly the everyday life of the Mundy sisters as he has problems adjusting back to Ireland. With his new pagan beliefs, the attitudes of the townspeople towards Jack change radically. In addition, this is the first time Michael sees his uncle. Friel creates a strong contrast between paganism and Catholicism in his play. Kate being the one to reinforce Catholic values and Jack to introduce new views. Agnes and Rose are laid off from their jobs as a new factory opens. The factory sells gloves at a lower price than they do, which is why they find themselves unemployed. This is an example of forced and unwelcome change. One of the consequences of industrialisation mentioned in the play is poverty. As all their means of earning money are taken away from them, the financial situation of the house worsens and their meals become smaller, Agnes and Rose decide to emigrate to England. Their lives in England are not great as they are left to do the worst jobs

Jack also engages in fights with his best friend, which at first is truly disheartening and unfair from the reader’s perspective, is later sympathized with the knowledge and understanding that it is Jacks true best shot at gaining the approval of his abusive stepfather Dwight and protecting himself. Jacks life is driven with emotional neglect and constant abuse; Dwight being the largest cause. Jack is desperate to transform himself into the masculine and happy person he wants to be, a deluded image and way of thinking that he believes will solve all his problems and hardships. Readers eventually gain the knowledge that his lies and deceit are his way of achieving this and providing him with comfort and hope as well as relief and escpae from his currently tortuous youth. ‘I couldn’t help but try to introduce new versions of myself as my interests changed, and as other versions of myself failed to persuade.’
Jack was so obsessed with the past, to begin with, due to his rough and mysterious childhood, in which he didn’t know who his true father was, why the man he thought was his father left, and his colleagues' and friends’ deaths. Learning the reasoning behind these all provide a form of closure for him. Now satisfied with his past, he resumes his work on the Cass Mastern story, this time writing a book instead of a Ph.D. dissertation, a symbol of his closure as he is finally able to come face to face with history once again. He believes he knows enough of his past to move on, and work toward new things in the future. Similarly, earlier on in the novel, on page 467, Jack’s satisfaction with the requirement of accepting his past to move on is seen when he is speaking about his moments with Anne Stanton, “I had not understood then what I think I have now come to understand: that we can keep the past only by having the future, for they are forever tied together.
Mary told the narrator to come back, if he needed a place to rent. He later rents out a room in Mary’s house, since he cannot return to the Men’s House. One day, when the narrator was walking down the street while eating yam, he noticed an eviction of two old couples. The narrator felt sorry for the couples so he became angry, which made him give a speech. Brother Jack offers a job opportunity in the Brotherhood organization because of the inspirational speech he gave at the eviction of the old couples.

Background of the play “Riders to the Sea” is a one-act play written by Irish playwright John Millington Synge. J.M. Synge, after visiting the Aran Islands situated off the Irish coast, found inspiration in the peasant life of rural Ireland. He started making annual trips in the summer and studied the lives of ordinary people and observed their superstitions, culture and folklore. This play was based on his experiences while there. On one of his trips he heard the story of a man whose body was found washed up on the shore on one of the Aran Islands.
