Our appearance is the first thing people see, but is beauty really only skin deep. According to the history books and Steinbeck, it is skin deep. Throughout history women have been told what they can and cannot wear, how they should or should not look, and how they can act or cannot act. From the 1800s to the mid 20th century, it wasn’t even culturally acceptable for women to wear pants. In Steinbeck’s Novella , Of Mice and Men when we are introduced to Curley’s wife, we are given a vivid description of her body and her beauty “She had full, rouged lips and wide-spread eyes”, (Steinbeck 31). But, throughout the novella we are rarely incited on her personality; in fact, we are never even told her name. Another example of characters experiencing loneliness is represented in the Article “Harvest Gypsies” by Steinbeck. In the article Steinbeck states “They are resourceful and intelligent people, who have gone through hell”(“ The Harvest”). In the quote he is talking about how the migrant workers are seen has incompetent or lazy because of their social status. Many people during the time period judged people based on social class. Just like how Curley’s wife was judged by hers. She talks to Lennie about how she had a chance to have a career in acting, she talks about how she could be living a luxurious life. But her mother would never allow it, instead her mother forced her to be married. These situations correlate because the migrant workers have talents that are never seen by society because they never care to look past their social status. Just like how Curley’s wife had a talent for acting but the men in the bunkhouse never cared to see past her looks.
