North Africa is categorized regionally with Southwest Asia, separate from sub-Saharan Africa by many factors. For example, NASWA region is more developed and has predominately Arabs living in this realm. Although there are other religions followed such as Christianity and Judaism, Islam is what most people practiced in the Middle East. Followers of this religion are called Muslims and there are two main groups: Sunni and Shiite. The Sunnis were those who believe that any devoted follower of Elijah Muhammad could take over after he died. However, the Shiites were against it and felt only a blood relative should uphold the teachings of the prophet. This caused conflict because each religion had their own beliefs as to what was more holy.
The natural resources in this realm made countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, and the United Arab Emirates wealthy. Sufism became a huge part of the popularity of Islam all around the inhabited areas of the Islamic empire. Religion was not the only reason as to why Islam became so popular. Islam, also began to accommodate other cultures by embracing Persian literature, Turkish ruling skills, and Arabic language contributions in law, religion, literature, and science. Eventually, by accommodating other cultural beliefs it created a "core" center, which would bring other cultures together in peace and harmony. Finally, the "core" that Islam created developed into what is now called the Middle East.
After the death of Muhammad in 632 CE, a rift occurred within the Islamic community. There was a vacancy for leadership and a question of who was qualified to fill it. At that time the companions of the Prophet were elected to be central leaders and were known as Caliphs. The way in which Caliphs were elected, and who succeeded them, is where the difference between Sunni and Shia begins.
Islam is a religion that was established by a man named Muhammed and means ‘submission.’ As sources say, an angel approached Muhammad while he was meditating in a cave; and told him about the word of Allah, the only God. After Islam was born, and the word of the angel was the beginning of the Qur’an. Islam was established as a monotheistic religion, as Muslims would only believe in one God, and was first preached by Muhammad. Islam grew, and eventually, the first Muslim community was developed in Medina, a city in Saudi Arabia.

Shi’a also believes in a ongoing sequence of heirs amongst the children of Ali. The Shi’a is not accepting of the three Caliphs. The Sunni is the original Islam. Islam is one of the largest religions today and this is how Islam started. Muhammad was from Mecca which was a spiritual place for many religions. Mecca is where Muhammad began his preaching. Mount Hira was where Muhammad first realized their was one god, Allah in the year 610 CE. Muhammad was sent away in the year 622 CE and came back to Mecca in 628 CE with all of his new followers to continue preaching to other people.

By maintaining peace between these other religions, citizens of other faiths willingly contributed to the Islamic empire. They participated in the community like citizens of the Islamic faith, sharing ideas and partaking in trade. The religion was able to expand with the conversion of people from other religions, but more importantly the accepting nature of this religion made other Islamic innovations

Muhammad was a prophet who was sent to confirm the Islamic belief, addressed by previous prophets.
North Americans and Western Africans, although living in vastly different areas, share many cultural similarities with each other. In both areas, the people had similar views on trading, land, religion and the social constructs of their societies. The Western Africans, for centuries, used trade to be able to connect with the rest of the world. The trading network throughout Africa went all throughout the continent and allowed West Africans to deliver goods to the North African hubs and ports, as well as eventually going to Europe and Asia. The Native Americans had a similar trade network.

Geography was a major influence in the development of the river valley and classical civilizations of the Middle East, China and India. These early civilizations developed near river valleys because water was essential to survival and the growth of the the civilization. In the Middle East civilizations developed along the Tigris and Euphrates river. Water was used as a means of transportation, farming, and irrigation. In Egypt, The Nile River was a major influence in regards to the achievements of the ancient Egyptians.
