Structural-functionalism Structural-functionalism is the idea that society is build by different structures, residing within it, making the cohesion of society stronger. Not all structures are perceivable by the individual - for example the time a certain culture/society eats. In Danish educational institutions, it is common to eat lunch at 11-12am, since one arrives at about 8am - this in turn means that the average time a family dines is usually between 6 and 7pm, whereas in Spain, where work begins later, subsequently lunch is eaten later as a result, which in turn means that the average dinnertime is later as well (between 8 and 10 pm). One of the most influential factor is definitely the media. First of all, we need to understand what cultivation means. Cultivation is how media in general affects the individual, in their view of their social reality. By only showing certain points of view, television today has enough power to affect the public discourse and therefore the individuals train of thoughts (Shanahan and Morgan 1999, p.4). This may cause certain misconceptions about different aspects of life, than one’s own aspects, thus altering their opinions but that is not all it causes. For example; statistics and therefore the media show that the amount people living alone in big cities have never been this high before, which might encourage potential hikikomoris towards reclusion. Researchers also call television the “cultural river” and saying that everyone is somehow carried by it (Shanahan and Morgan 1999, p.12). Fandom is usually about the shared interest in a certain area, while they still keep in touch with the society around them, where hikikomori takes it a step further, because they do not want to be seen and confronted by the society, even by their own peers. Hikikomori is an extreme form of Otaku (Japanese term for a geek devoted to a subject, most often Animes, Mangas or computer games).
