A quality that I believe matters the most in a character is courage. Courage is normally what it takes to do something that you're afraid to do. In the story “Freedom Walkers” Claudette Colvin decides to not give away her seat on the bus and risks being arrested. The thing that Claudette did is something many people aren't willing to do because there may be severe consequences after doing them. In the text “Priscilla and the wimps” Priscilla also portrays courage. She portrays this quality by standing up for herself and others by putting a bully in their place. The reason I chose these two texts to nominate is because I feel like they have a good amount of stuff I can compare between both of them. Another reason I chose them is because they were both my favorite texts that we read in this unit and both of the main …show more content…
Claudette Colvin was only 15 years old when she decided that she was going to stand up against discrimination against black people. Claudette chose not to give up her bus seat and was confronted by the bus driver. After she was still refusing to give up her seat the bus driver called the police on her and she was charged with battery and assault. This story was very inspiring and shows that you should not let anyone tell you not to do something you have a right to do. The story “Priscilla and wimps” is about a gang at a school that likes to bully kids that are weaker than them. None of the kids do anything about it until something happens to Melvin. Priscilla decides to stand up for Melvin by karate chopping the bullys arm when they grab Melvin. Priscilla could have gotten hurt by one of the kobras but she didn't and ended up helping her friend. Priscilla standing up for her friend was a great example of courage because a lot of people never stand up for themselves when something bad happens to them or someone around
During a crowded afternoon bus ride, "I decided I wasn't gonna take it anymore… After the other students got up, there were three empty seats in my row, but that white woman still wouldn't sit down-not even across the aisle from me…blacks had to be behind whites… 'Why are you still sittin' there?'"(Hoose 32). Initiating the Civil Rights Movement, Claudette Colvin refused to stand for a white lady when there was an empty row next to her. Claudette's bravery sparked a fire within the black community, & they attempted to keep her name in the papers. Through the short bout of fame, “The news that a schoolgirl had been arrested for refusing to surrender her bus seat to a white passenger flashed through Montgomery’s black community and traveled far beyond,”(Hoose 39).
The veterans of the Bonus March, 1932 were awarded with “bonuses” for their bravery in the war by the government to be paid at a later date. Many of these soldiers were unable to support themselves and their families because of the depression and requested the American government to pre-pone their bonus. Their hopes were shattered when the senate did not pass the bill and in turn their retaliated and assaulted the police with brutality. The author is trying to explain how a politically influenced approach can sometimes have consequences but lead to a positive outcome. Through her reading the author Barbara shows her readers that taking a stand and fighting for the greater good is not an easy task.
The bus driver demanded her to get up from the seat and she still refused, saying she paid her fare and it was her constitutional right. The NAACP received a large number of letters saying how brave Colvin was to refuse her seat. Secretary of the NAACP Rosa Parks reviewed the letters and incepted by the NAACP to become the spokesperson of the NAACP's bus boycott and Anti-Segregation movement. I honestly had never heard of Claudette Colvin until watching the Drunk History video. The added humor

Teddy Roosevelt once said, “Courage is not having the strength to go on; it is going on when you don’t have the strength.” Throughout the whole novel of The Things They Carried, there are continuous examples of courage and what courage means to different soldiers. Tim O’Brien, the author of The Things They Carried, tells multiple war stories throughout the novel all with different morals. However, one thing that all of these war stories have in common is that each displays an example of great courage. One war story that we read about in the novel, is the story of Norman Bowker and Kiowa.
All Sarah ’s life she was taught that slaves are not equal to whites, but she still fought for them. She stood up to anyone that was against her even her family. Sarah went out way of her and sacrificed things to save others. Throughout the novel courage helps the characters get through difficult situations.
She showed her true level of courage the night she left knowing her grandmother was trying to buy her and her children. After she left her grandmothers she knew she needed to continue without the help of others because she would put herself and her family at great risk. The fact that she left on her own with little to no help from others shows that she had great courage to get what she deserved as a person that was educated and had the ability to work. Along with her gaining and showing a high level of courage, she showed that she was not going to let her fear to control her.
This story is similar to the short story “Priscilla and the Wimps” because they both center around the theme of bullying and standing up for others. In “Priscilla and the Wimps”, Priscilla uses violence to stand up for Melvin, who is getting bullied by Monk. Priscilla is similar to the character, Jack, from “Wonder” and Melvin is similar to the character, Auggie, from “Wonder”. In both stories, Melvin and Auggie are frequently bullied. Though, in “Priscilla and the Wimps” it was never stated that Melvin was frequently bullied, I can make the assumption that he is a very easy target for the Klutter Kobra’s due to his small stature.
By standing up for what is right, even in the face of danger, these characters can overcome their guilt and inspire others to do the same. Point 3 Transition + Claim (Topic Sentence): we should maintain courage because it stays true to morals and beliefs. Evidence A3: In Act 2, Elizabeth Proctor demonstrates courage by refusing to lie and incriminate others to save her life. She values honesty and integrity over self-preservation, even though it means potentially facing execution.
In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout, Calpurnia, and Atticus stand out when courage comes to mind. These characters show courage in many unique ways with different situations. In the early 1930s, in the deep south, racial discrimination was a huge conflict, for example, the Jim Crows Laws were in play, and it legalized segregation between blacks and whites. Courage isn’t always shown in situations, but simply throughout growing up.
