Medical professionals constantly face patients’ deaths, and become desensitized to it (Robbins, 2012). This helps emergency medical workers deal with many traumatic incidents without negatively responding to each one, but responders still encounter countertransference (Rothchild & Rand, 2006). There are many factors in the lives of responders and the incidents they respond to that can make them more susceptible to traumatic stress reactions. These reactions affect responders in many ways, and responders should learn how to cope with this stress. Emergency responders will react more to incidents that have traumatic

A disaster affects both the survivors of and the responders to the events as well as posing long-term psychological effects to both the survivors and responders. When people think of accidents and misfortune they tend to think of the person being saved, not the person doing the saving. Ever since I can remember I have always wanted to make a difference and help anyone in need that I possibly could. From the start of my childhood, I can recall helping my mother care for my great grandparents, so they would be able to live out the rest of their lives from their home, instead of in a nursing home.
