The Article “Institutional betrayal makes violence more toxic” and the play Hamlet share the idea that betrayal can cause pain. The article points out the institutional betrayal of the police, especially the Michael Brown ordeal. The article tells us that police should be a source of protection and security, not the perpetrators of racially motivated violence. The article goes in depth on how betrayal is seen when it is committed by people we trust or depend on. In addition it explains that when betrayal is openly acknowledged, people have the opportunity to heal and prevent further betrayal.

Also, Hamlet displays his anguish at the Queen for dishonouring his dead father since “Almost as bad, good mother, as killing a king and marrying his brother” (Shakespeare, pg. 121). In this statement, Hamlet expresses how, through the marriage to her husband’s murderer, Gertrude is a symbol of dishonor and damaging her relationship with the prince. Hamlet is disgusted by Gertrude’s actions and recognizes her not as his mother but the queen and wife of Claudius, the murderer. The respect revered by children to their mother is not evident between Hamlet and Gertrude. In Gertrude’s death scene, Hamlet screams to his mother “Wretched Queen, adieu!”

Corruption in Hamlet and 1984 Comparing William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet to George Orwell’s novel 1984 may seem like a difficult task on the surface, however, through further analysis, the theme of corruption links these two texts together. In the play Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, the main character, Hamlet, claims and perceives women to be treacherous, heartless, and untrustworthy. The root of Hamlet's hatred for women seems to have began with his mother, Gertrude, and is then taken out on the fragile, young Ophelia. His father’s mysterious, unnatural death is also a possible cause of his beliefs and actions. Throughout the scenes, Hamlet’s mental state worsens and we can see a clear pattern of misogyny in his communication and actions with the female characters in the play. Hamlet’s deep-rooted hatred and confusion of love is much more complex than just the simple fact of misogyny or his dislike for women.

The question of whether or not Hamlet was insane is of a never-ending debate. Was he always crazy? Was he always faking it? Or was he somewhere in between? In this paper I will share three different views and provide my own interpretation of Hamlet’s sanity.

Deceit and deception are not the only themes in the story of The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, but it is also a way certain characters, mainly Hamlet himself, use to carry out their own personal gain. The focus will mainly be on the main character as he is the best example for a character using deception to his own ends. Hamlet is a very odd and curious character. Hamlet’s views on women is adulterous which pertains to the misogynistic tendencies in the play; thus, Hamlet’s mother, Gertrude, sparks up his misogynistic approaches. Hamlet is repulsed with Gertrude since she was quick to re-wed immediately following Old Hamlet’s death and cries: “She married. O, most wicked speed, to post / With such dexterity to incestuous sheets!” (1.2.156-157). Hamlet is shocked that his mother remarries to Claudius, Old Hamlet’s brother, before letting the tears on her cheek to dry.

In his play, Hamlet, Shakespeare uses themes of deception, greed, and revenge to showcase these recurring themes of human nature during the sixteenth century. Meanwhile, in present day the extent of these themes are still seen in a variety of ways. Hamlet is very relevant in today’s world. A key example would entail the parallels between current President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, and master manipulator, King Claudius.

In William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the protagonist, Hamlet, dies in an effort to revenge his father, the King of Denmark, who was murdered and usurped by Claudius, Hamlet’s uncle.
