13. Who was Constantine? What happened to her?
Constantine was ‘the help’ of the Phelan family. According to Skeeter, Constantine was more of a motherly figure to her, than her own mother was. As she grew older, Constantine became slow when completing her duties. One day, Charlotte decided to invite the Daughters’ of America to her house in honour of her promotion as part of the committee. A very important member, Gracie Higginbotham, becomes aware of Constantine’s incompetence. Rachel, Constantine’s daughter appears at the door, and is told by Charlotte to enter through the kitchen, to avoid the committee meeting. Rachel disobeys her and intrudes on the meeting, creating a scene in front of all the other women. Gracie is appalled that Charlotte would allow this behaviour in her household, forcing Charlotte to fire Constantine. Charlotte kept this from Skeeter, as she knew she would not receive approval from her daughter.

The Phelan family treated Constantine differently from the other southern families. She was welcomed as more of an equal, rather than just a slave. This was suggested through Charlotte’s response to her behavior while she retold the story to Skeeter. Charlotte had tears in her eyes after revealing her story, implying that she was regretful of her actions.
The way Charlotte interacted with Rachel and Constantine also hinted that they had a friendly relationship. Early in the scene, when Charlotte receives a badge in honour of her new appointment, she makes a visible wink towards Constantine. This shows that she was willing to share her achievement with Constantine, indicating that she was an important part of Charlotte’s

Many historians hail him as a good emperor because of his positive contributions to the Church. Before Constantine's reign the church was underground and was hardly recognized as a legitimate religion, in fact Christians were recognized as cannibals (because of the ordinance of the Lord's supper) or atheists because they didn't believe in Paganism. Christianity started off small, it was an offshoot of Judaism, but it slowly became bigger and bigger and when Constantine came to power it was the second biggest religion in the Roman empire. Christianity became so popular, even Constantine himself converted making the religion the religion of the state. This made Christianity very popular, suddenly high class people and the wealthy started converting,

The Byzantine Iconoclastic Controversy began in 726 CE when Emperor Leo III issued a decree against the worship of icons.1 This action resulted in the removal and destruction of icons in churches and monasteries.2 There had been tensions rising between the church and the state over the use of icons for some time, but the culmination of these tensions along with the pressure of Muslim armies attacking the borders of Byzantium lead to the explosive Iconoclastic Controversy. The iconoclasts ardently believed that the creation of images depicting holy people was making God angry. The iconophiles believed that these images were sacred and used them as a means of worshiping God. This theological battle lead to the meeting of several ecumenical councils in order to resolve the controversy between the church and the state. This paper will examine the arguments for and against the use of icons from iconoclasts and iconophiles in the Byzantine Empire.

While Constantine was praying for God to reveal himself to him, a great cross made of light appeared to him in the sky. The cross bore the words “conquer by this.” Constantine did not immediately understand what this meant. That night, while he was sleeping, Jesus Christ appeared to Constantine holding the very same cross, telling him to make a likeness of the cross and carry it with him for protection from his enemies. The next morning, when Constantine awoke, he became convinced that the Christian God was willing to aid him at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge.
