Levels of Conformity The way one carries thierself and behaves in the society they adapted to is very similar to conformity and nonconformity. The ultimate meaning to conform is to “comply with rules, standards, or laws” while to nonconform is the opposite. Two opposing characters from different books experience the ability to conform or to not conform. An allegorical novel called Animal Farm written by George Orwell expresses many different unique characters, one conformist being named “Squealer.” The debut novel of American novelist Veronica Roth is called Divergent, which in differentiation explores a nonconformist character named “Beatrice Prior(Tris).” Both characters behaved in their societies differently resulting in a change of outcome in their lives. Squealer and Tris’ nature of conformity is different with completely opposite consequences; Squealer conforms to his society in Animal Farm giving him a more superior role in the society, however, Tris non conforms to her society in Chicago giving her a more detestable role in society. Unlike the other animals on the farm, Squealer was treated with more importance. “You do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in spite of selfishness and privilege?”(George Orwell, 35). Squealer and other pigs of conformity have the consequence of being selfish in which their affected positively by caring for themselves, however, affected negatively because their needs are impacting other lives badly. “Milk and apples contain substances absolutely necessary to the well-being of a pig”(George Orwell, 36). Animals other than pigs on the farm are treated unjustly due to most of the food supply being distributed to pigs. Squealer being one of those pigs faced the consequence of feeling guilty as well as fed. Conformity comes with two sides that can stab one in the
In a speech given by Squealer to justify this claim, he uses rhetorical questions, juxtaposition, and ideas far beyond most animals to strengthen his pathos and logos; his argument that defines that pigs are the most adept animals and deserve only the best. As the animals find out that the pigs have been stockpiling and enjoying luxuries that the other animals have not, they rightfully feel gulled. Squealer addresses this early on in his speech, “You do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege?”. This is the hook that intrigues the animals and lures them into the argument through curiosity. He then states that, “Many of us actually dislike milk and apples.
Squealer says that “No one believes more firmly than Comrade Napoleon that all animals are equal. ”(Orwell 55). Squealer is persuading the other animals that Napoleon is the model citizen and does more for the farm than anyone else. This use of rhetoric creates the idea that the other animals aren't contributing as much as Napoleon and makes them feel ungrateful. The citizens of the Animal Farm are consistently manipulated by Squealer throughout the story and do whatever is asked of them, even as conditions worsen.
In the novel written by George Orwell, the presence of narcissism amongst the pigs results in unjust control of the animals, as well as deprivation of their freedom and the ability to interact with the natural world. The use of propaganda within Animal Farm shows a great example of how media controls citizens in a dystopia. In order for the pigs to maintain total control of the farm’s society, they manipulate the other animals. The author presents, “he announced that, by a special decree of Comrade Napoleon, Beasts of England had been abolished” (Orwell 88).
In Animal Farm, Squealer, chief propagandist, attempts to convince the animals that their lives under the regime of the animals is better than that of the humans. Squealer tries to convey this message, for example, by telling the animals that the animals would better off if Napoleon made decisions for them. Squealer says, “No one believes more firmly than Comrade Napoleon that all animals are equal. He would be only too happy to let you make your decisions for yourselves.
Through the novel, George Orwell uses Squealer character to help display the egotistical traits that human carry. Although it was not bluntly shown, he did nothing to stop how the farm was being run because he enjoyed having power over the animals. Squealer was extremely good at manipulating the animals to gain this power. Squealer had managed to convince the animals that Boxer was being brought to a hospital, even though the animals had proof that he was being brought to be butchered. “ I was at his bedside at the very last.
What would you do if you were given absolute control over a nation- Make it a place people will be happy to call home or strip the land to support yourself? The allegorical story Animal Farm (1944) by George Orwell, written at a time of great social change and totalitarianism ideas, explores the idea of human nature and also the positive and negative ways it can be expressed through people. Two characters that reveal some truth about human nature and existence are Napoleon, the manipulative pig, and Boxer, the naïve horse. Napoleon and Boxer are polar opposite examples within the spectrum of human nature. the former showing …and the latter… (just short summaries of your overall points here.
This relates to the theme because, throughout the story, the pigs have been in charge because they have more knowledge than the other animals. They were also really clever and could think of a way around every difficulty the farm experienced. ( Orwell 13) In the middle of the story, some crucial rules were being changed and the animals did not do anything about it. “ … pigs not only took their meals in the kitchen and used the drawing-room as a recreation room, but also slept in the beds.”
In Animal Farm, we see the sinister theme of abuse of power and corruption displayed throughout the story. The epitome on how the pigs abused the power was how they manipulated the 7 commandments to their own benefit. The 7 commandments were inscribed on the wall and they would form “an unalterable law by which all animals on Animal Farm must live for ever after”. Ironically, the 7 commandments were changed one by one to suit the benefit of the pigs. For example, when the pigs discovered a case of whiskey and got drunk, they got attracted to the taste of alcohol.
Animal Farm illustrates how leaders become corrupt when they abuse their power, treat the population differently based on their status, and the leaders manipulate and oppress the working class. Over the course of the book, Napoleon and the pigs abused their power. After an announcement about trading with the humans for supplies, Squealer
In addition, Squealer often threatens the animals that Mr. Jones will return if they did not follow as instructed by Napoleon to manipulate the farm animals. For instance, pigs decided that the milk and windfall as well as the main crops of apples should be reserved for the pigs alone. Ostensibly, pigs need to be in healthy state as they claimed to be the Einstein of the welfare of the farm. Here also, Squealer threatens the animals that Jones would return if they oppose the idea. Therefore, the animals agreed with
Stalin, the leader of the Communist army in Russia and the most powerful man in the past uses violence to the ones that go against him. He has a style of dictatorship where many people suffer. Gunshots going across, people dying out, outcry, burst in tears with bruises all over the body, killing in harsh condition all occurs during Russian Revolution. The historical background of George Orwell’s Animal Farm is also the Russian Revolution. In the book, Napoleon uses dictatorship to order other animals, uses accuration, and give harsh punishment who block his way.
The pigs, who are more intelligent, tricked the animals into thinking they have a choice when in reality they do not. Even more, as the story progressed, the animals lost their voice in debates. Every Sunday, the animals held Meetings in the farmhouse to discuss the work and plans for the week.
“All animals are equal.” This is the foundation for the novel Animal Farm in which farm animals rebel against a drunken, abusive farmer and create their own society which they think is flawless. Can everyone be equal while societal structure remains operational? The characters in Animal Farm by George Orwell show that every person is different and that societal structure is based on factors such as intelligence, power, influence, and strength with leadership and power as a constant struggle between multiple forces. Every animal in the book had a different role and a relationship with other animals in the farm that affected his/her societal position and power.
He makes them believe everything he and the pigs are doing is for the greater good of the whole farm despite the fact that it is not. Squealer controls them in many ways but the strongest or most apparent are telling the other animals Mr. Jones their neglective abusive owner will come back, lying about Boxer the horse’s death, and finally changing the unalterable commandments into one that reads “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others”. One of the very first and most used techniques Squealer uses is instilling fear in the animals. He does this by threatening Jones’s return.
In this process, Squealer plays a significant role in comforting the animals and keeping the farm in peace. Squealer does this by persuading the animals through his persuasive speeches. In this novel, George Orwell illustrates the huge influence a speech can have on the society’s mind and on individuals. Old Major’s speech about how all animals are equal and they should rebel against their oppressors influence the animals heavily. In the
