Many actions played out during the Holocaust and World War II were not humane, and still remind us like a scream behind closed doors: hidden but still heard. While hearing the horrid stories and seeing the ghoulish photos of times not to be forgotten, we see the tragedy that is the mistreatment of human lives. Our identities are lost little by little, but those victims had theirs ripped from their bodies. After losing everything and then becoming a nearly empty vessel, it is amazing that we attempt to comprehend the cruelty of the Holocaust. The loss of identity and self might have started with Adolf Hitler’s reign, for the Holocaust legacies, but we are all losing bits of ourselves constantly.

The book Night by Elie Wiesel offers a harrowing account of the atrocities that were inflicted on Jews during the Holocaust. The Jews were subjected to inhumane treatment, such as being forcefully deported to concentration camps, starved, worked until exhaustion, and routinely beaten, among other forms of cruelty. The brutalization of Jews reached its peak with their systematic extermination in gas chambers and crematoria. These events offer insight into the dehumanization of Jews under Nazi rule. The book offers a reminder of the horrors of the Holocaust and the need to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future Jews were subjected to inhumane treatment in concentration camps during the Holocaust.

“Meir Katz was moaning: Why don't they just shoot us now?” (Wiesel 103). This shows how the harsh conditions and punishment of the Nazi officers dehumanize the jewish prisoners in concentration camps. It is the process of dehumanization that made possible the evils of the Holocaust and makes possible the smaller evils that occur on a daily basis. The Nazi guards, as revealed in the Elie Wiesel memoir, Night, were able to victimize their prisoners because the process of dehumanization desensitized them to the evils they inflicted.

The terrifying encounters and portrayal of genocide, witnessed and experienced, during the holocaust were traumatizing and life changing. The Jewish prisoners, in the memoir, “Night” written by Eliezer Wiesel, were treated more like filthy animals than the human beings they were. The concentration camps were just a birthplace for a series of hellish physical and mental torture, as well as constant dehumanization. Years in malicious concentration camps, such as Auschwitz, Buna, and Buchenwald, result in detrimental physical and mental repercussions as prisoners are deprived of the most basic human rights.

The holocaust is considered one of the worst tragedies in modern history. It claimed the lives of many people and it left a dark mark on the world’s history. Today, we remember the lives lost in many different ways. There are countless accounts written regarding life in concentration camps. Two of these accounts are Elie Wiesel’s Night and On the Bottom by Primo Levi.

Thousands of Jewish prisoners were killed per day in concentration camps. The way the Nazis succeeded in killing this much Jews was by creating gas chambers and crematoriums. First, in the novel night, Elie Wiesel described how he witnessed dozens of “children being thrown into the flames.” Wiesel was told when he arrived to Auschwitz that “Here, you must work. If you don’t you will go straight to the chimney.

The severely cruel conditions of concentration camps had a profound impact on everyone who had the misfortune of experiencing them. For Elie Wiesel, the author of Night and a survivor of Auschwitz, one aspect of himself that was greatly impacted was his view of humanity. During his time before, during, and after the holocaust, Elie changed from being a boy with a relatively average outlook on mankind, to a shadow of a man with no faith in the goodness of society, before regaining confidence in humanity once again later in his life. For the first 13 years of his life, Elie seemed to have a normal outlook on humanity.

Throughout one’s experiences in life, one has endured so much pain, so many hardships, that it is nearly incomprehensible to not lose hope. In the book, Night, by Elie Wiesel, Elie himself experiences the most horrific idea of the century, the bane of Jewish society; the holocaust. The holocaust was a rigorous attempt made by Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany to eliminate the entirety of the Jewish people, who he blamed for his country’s misfortune and poor condition. Elie depicts his entire journey as he struggles to survive throughout his book, and at the same time shows the agony of his and the other prisoners. This was such a tragic time in history and we should all be thankful that our world isn 't like this. The Concentration Camps were made because Hitler hated the jews and wanted to kill all and they were kind of brainwashing them to tell them it is a wonderful place to live. When they were making the camps the Nazis would go around just shooting people for no reason. So Hitler and the Nazis captured the majority of the Jews and put them into these camps saying they should be here and that they deserve to died and it is all their fault.

Since no doctors, lots of diseases got passed around throughout the camps. The life of Jews controlled by Nazi’s was no life to live. Nazi’s treated Jews with the most ruthless, and often quite refined, cruelty. The Jews would not get fed good and did not get many clothes. As they arrived at camp they got there clothes taken and then received the striped pajamas.
