Comparing Conrad's Rebellion In Star Wars And Ordinary People

Throughout the stories one sees how each author portrays the use of a collectivist society though uniqueness, equality, and transgression. There are many similarities between the novella Anthem by Ayn Rand and the story “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. In Anthem and “Harrison Bergeron” one could see that a similar theme is that going against the grain causes consequences. According to “Harrison Bergeron” a ballerina states that “ ‘Harrison Bergeron age fourteen,’ she said in a grackle squawk, ‘has just escaped from jail, where he was held on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the government.

1. A rebel, by definition, is a person who rises in opposition or armed resistance against an established government or ruler. As opposed to a patriot who is a person who enthusiastically supports their country and is prepared to defend it against enemies or detractors. By definition, they are complete opposites in both their motives and beliefs. Prime examples of each would be Roger Williams and the thirteen colonies.

As the fourth section progresses we are introduced to a variety of characteristics that define a rebel. My personal take was that you know you are truly rebel when you cannot be easily defined by stereotypes of a rebel. In addition, a rebellious person may rebel against multiple ideals but in rebelling against those ideals they support different ideals. Chris McCandless is a paragon of a rebel seen in his rebellion against societal norms but also his rebellion against characteristics of individuals that rebel against societal norms.

A rebel is the act of an individual refusing to listen or follow authority. Rebels are characters who fight for their own ideals. They will do anything almost being malevolent to destroy the limits set up against them. There are three characters that established themselves as “rebels”, from the short story unit. Captain Torres from “Just Lather and Nothing Else” , The group of children from “Green Gulch”, and Nick from ‘Let It Ride” are characters that refused to follow vital human morals.

This government is very much the opposite. Everyone is very blind and obedient in Anthem. Despite following different ideas, the book and movie possess many similarities. Where both stories create symbolism and a corrupt government, Rand promotes individuality, but Moore promotes unity as a means to seek change.
