Hannah Basler Pellegrino Honors Humanities 9 27 October 2016 The Impeachment of Andrew Johnson April 15, 1865 changed America for the worst. Andrew Johnson was sworn into presidency right after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. Andrew Johnson grew up in a family that had little education and money. He worked as a tailor, and did not have a formal education. Andrew Johnson was the Senator of Tennessee and during the Civil War, he was the only Southern Senator to stay with the Union. Abraham Lincoln chose Andrew Johnson as his Vice President for 45t5ihis second term, and Johnson became President only six weeks later. He was a democrat unlike Lincoln, and he believed that the United States of America was a country for white men. The difference …show more content…
Andrew Johnson tried to take the Secretary of War Edwin Stanton out of office. Andrew Johnson wanted Edwin Stanton removed because he was the only member on his cabinet that was a Republican. Andrew Johnson replaced Edwin Stanton with Ulysses S. Grant on February 21, 1868. Therefore, the act was created to prevent the President from aiming to discard government officials without Senate consent (Ross, 98). Andrew Johnson disregarded the act, knowing the risks, and tried once again to replace Edwin Stanton with General Lorenzo Thomas (“Tenure of Office Act”). After his second attempt, it created more of a problem for President Johnson because nine of his eleven articles of impeachment were caused by his unlawful breaking of the Tenure of Office Act. Andrew Johnson believed that the Tenure of Office Act was unconstitutional and was not fair to the rights of an American citizen. After looking over the act, the Senate decided that it was not unconstitutional at the time. Years after Andrew Johnson’s term, Senate did rule the act unconstitutional, but it could not contribute to the case against Andrew …show more content…
Reconstruction was a policy made to grant all southern states that succeeded, access back in the union as quickly as possible. Radical Republicans knew the Reconstruction plan would fail with Andrew Johnson in office. The Freedmen’s Bureau Bill and the Civil Rights Bill both were created to protect the rights of newly freed African Americans and Andrew Johnson vetoed the bills. Johnson was a democrat, so he believed that white men were superior to african american men. He stated at a speech, “This is a country for white men and as long as I am President, it shall be a Government for white men.” Andrew Johnson made this statement and many citizens of the United States became angry. America fought in the Civil War and this statement disagreed with what America had fought through to get to the spot they were at. The newly formed union wanted to get back to sea to shining sea, with every person having the same chance of equal rights. Slaves were now freed and continued to feel subjugated because non-colored citizens kept taking away the rights to the slaves newly freed world. By law, anyone could now do anything they would like as long as it followed the laws, and it was not just a white man's
Harper’s Weekly wrote, “If, as General Butler says, the Tenure bill was leveled at Andrew Johnson alone, and was passed upon no general considerations whatever, then it ought to be repealed.” 2. The act that led to Johnson’s trial would be repealed in 1887 when President Grover Cleveland—during his first term in office—challenged the constitutionality of the act. a. Eventually, in 1926, an act similar to the Tenure of Office Act was passed, but the Supreme Court ruled that it was unconstitutional. C. Should Johnson be impeached?
After the reading of the preface, chapter one, six and nine, I learned a lot about how the revolution took place in the southern society. The author who's Eric Forner, gave a lot of details about each event and important date in the revolution process. Forner, wrote the story of the slave revolution in the United States. Sumter noticed a restructuring of American social and political life so revolutionary that the very idea of reconstruction is impossible without the Civil War. The emancipation proclamation of 1863 is taken as Eric’s point of beginning, with the persuasive reasoning that it “represented a turning point in national policy as well as the character of the war.”
Andrew Johnson Jense Mercado Andrew Johnson was born in december 29,1808 in Raleigh,NC.He later then died in July 31, 1875 in Elizabethton TN.His political party was democratic, his presidential term was from April 15, 1864 to March 4 ,1868.Bill Clinton was the only other president to get impeached, he was impeached by the House Of Representative but acquitted by the Senate. Richard Nixon resigned before he could be impeached. Bill Clinton was impeached on two charges perjury and obstruction of justice. Clinton lied under oath about his affair with Monica Lewinsky but that was not the ground of the impeachment. Impeachment is a formal process in wich an official are accused of unlawful activity, the outcome of which depending on the country.
Chap 8: The Presidency Why did the Articles of Confederation intentionally have a weak Executive Branch? There was no executive branch under the articles of confederation. There were 18 men who served as the presidents of the continental congress. They had no actual authority in the government. What Amendment “prevents a President from serving more than two terms / 10 years if he comes into office via death or impeachment”?
There have been only two presidents throughout American History that have been impeached. These two presidents were William (Bill) Clinton and Andrew Johnson. Andrew Johnson was the vice president and shortly became the 17th president in 1865 after the assassination of Lincoln. Bill Clinton was elected the 42nd president in 1992, after being the governor of Arkansas. Both of these impeachments were different in several ways.
Andrew Jackson really liked power, some would say he is obsessed with it. Andrew Jackson had an idea called the Indian Removal Act and the Trail of Tears and what it did was that it kicked out the indians from west of the Mississippi. The indians felt very strongly about protecting their land because if you you think about it, what if you had just 1 day to pack up all of the things in your house and had to leave forever. Plus what if on that journey to find a new home, along the way you lost some people like family that you love and care about. That is what the indians had to go through and that changed their lives forever.
Andrew Johnson, former Vice President to President Abraham Lincoln, was sworn into office after the assassination of Lincoln in April of 1865. Andrew Johnson served as the 17th President of the United Stated from 1865-1869. Johnson, seemingly an honest and righteous man had every odd up against him including the Radical Republicans. He had no chance when up against the jurisdiction of the Radicals and fell short of dominion every time. Johnson’s reign was one of the few compelling presidency’s due to his continuous mix-ups and battles with the Radicals.
Johnson was impeached in 1868, near the end of his term, for violating a congressional law. Nixon faced impeachment in 1974, in his second term, for his role in the Watergate scandal. Clinton was impeached in 1998, in his second term, for his affair with Monica Lewinsky.
Ronald Reagan could have definitely been impeached by the standards used on the governors governors (malfeasance, misfeasance or nonfeasance) mainly because of the many things that he had done during his presidency. There were were reports from Beirut that the Reagan administration approached Iran with an arms for hostage deal but President Ronald Reagan denied it. Days later he did admit that arms had been shipped to Iran to forge a better relationship but denied they were arms for hostages. He negotiated with terrosists! If that does not scream impeachment then I do not know what does.
Andrew Johnsons impeachment wasn’t as special because he wasn't elected, he had to take over for Abraham Lincoln, who was assassinated. The impeachment of Former President Clinton was difficult on the government as impeachment is a long process. Part of the process was a trial against FormerPresident Clinton. Along with a trial was a vote in the Senate. In this vote, two charges were brought up against him.
“It is to be regretted the rich and powerful too often bend the acts of government to their own selfish purposes.” Andrew Jackson was a self-made man. He came from a poor family and had a difficult childhood. Andrew Jackson joined the militia when he was young. He won the Battle of New Orleans because he had skills.
Consistency in rulings is important because it ensures fairness. In other words, consistency means holding every individual accountable and subjecting them to the same legal standards. The ambiguity of the impeachment terms and the political nature of the process create possibilities of two presidents being differently subjected to impeachment. Of course, no two reasons for impeachment can be similar but consequences should be commensurate with offenses. For instance, Bill Clinton was impeached for obstruction of justice, and dishonesty, in a way that should not reflect presidential character, non-withstanding the fact that many other presidents epitomized the same substandard behavior, and even worse at times.
President William Clinton faced impeachment by the House of the Representatives on two charges including obstruction of justice and perjury. His impeachment saga originated from a lawsuit filed against him by Paula Jones for sexual harassment while she worked as a state employee in 1991 in Arkansas. During this time, Clinton served as a governor of Arkansas.
President Andrew Jackson was a president who had done many things during his presidency. From the rotating of government jobs to the indian removal act president Andrew Jackson was the kind of president who had a purpose for everything that he did and mostly it was for the people. Andrew Jackson was not the kind of guy that you want to be on your bad side, if he said they he was going to “hang you by the nearest tree that he could find” he was going to do it. He also stuck up for what and who he believed in family, friend, pure stranger syou name it. Andrew Jackson Letter to Congress on rotating government jobs.
Abraham Lincoln’s vs Andrew Johnson’s Reconstruction Plan Lincoln shared the uncommon belief that the confederate states could still be part of the union and that the cause of the rebellion was only a few within the states which lead him to begin the reconstruction in December of 1863. This resulted in plans with lenient guidelines and although they were challenged by Wade-Davis Bill, Lincoln still rejected his ideas and kept his policies in place. Lincoln also allowed land to be given the newly freed slave or homeless white by distributing the land that had been confiscated from former land owners however this fell through once Johnson took office. After Lincoln’s death when Johnson was elected many things started to turn away from giving blacks equal rights and resulted in many things such a black codes which kept newly freed slaves from having the same rights as whites. When Lincoln first acted after the civil war, he offered policies that would allow the confederate slaves to become part of the union again and would allow a pardon for those states.
