Perseus Vs. Percy Jackson Essay (Final Draft)
“No man who had ever set out to kill Medusa had come back, and the king was sure that now he was forever rid of Perseus.” Throughout the movie of “Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief” and throughout the original mythology of “Perseus”, there are obviously huge differences between the two stories-- but there are also huge similarities as well. “Percy Jackson” draws on the legend of “Perseus” by having quite a similar story/a similar concept, while the story of “Percy Jackson” also transforms the original story by making the film more modern -- by adding more different quests, and by changing some of the characters/adding more new characters. The hero archetypes that the two stories would share is the ‘Prodigy’ -- the hero theme being the ‘Underdog’ -- and lastly for the plot type being the ‘Quest’. To start, the hero archetypes in the movie -- and the original story would be both the ‘Misfit’ and the ‘Prodigy’. In the movie “Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief”, the main character Percy Jackson, son of Poseidon -- had things such as ADHD and dyslexia, and in camp Half-Blood Annabeth and many other of the people in the camp had their doubts about Percy, especially of the idea about Percy defeating Hades. (Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief) In the story “Danaus, Perseus, and The Gorgon” -- when Perseus’ mother Danae is taken ‘hostage’ by the evil king of the island that they were sent to, Perseus is sent on a quest in order to kill Medusa. The king of that island would’ve never expected Perseus to win against Medusa, therefore he sent him on the quest -- so Perseus would never return. “Medusa was one of the three horrible Gorgon sisters, so
Percy jackson and the olympians lightning thief is the modern version of the Danus,Perseus and the gorgons using theme concepts,hero types and archetypes,hero's journey and plot structure. Having good vs evil and the prodigy. First,percy needed to find pearls to help get him self to the underworld to save his mom,He had to find all 3 pearls to get back or it would be hard getting back, In perseus he would do anything to help his mom. Percy was searching for the pears he ran into enemies like medusa,Perseus had to go find her because he didn't have a present to give her.
A good leader should respect the people they’re working with, take ownership of their mistakes, and be trustworthy. Odysseus didn’t show most of these traits, Odysseus didn’t care about his crew as much as he should have. Percy Jackson showed great respect to his crew, he was close friends with the people he was working with which made it easier for them to get along and complete tasks together. Odysseus’ men betrayed him when they opened the bag of wind that blew them back home, if Odysseus had a good relationship with his crewmates, that wouldn’t have happened. Odysseus shouldn’t have treated his men the way that he did, Percy Jackson is a better leader than Odysseus in many ways.
What if you're whole world was all the sudden turned upside down, and you are the only hope? Would you take action, or be a bystander in your own fate? In both stories, the characters take action, and their life is better because of it. Peter, a boy from Jumanji, and Odysseus from the Odyssey have to take quick action. Both characters have to make many sacrifices, and go through many hardships to make it home.
Rick Riordan 's novel, The Lightning Thief, can be effectively interpreted through Joseph Campbell 's Hero Cycle analytical tool. In utilizing this tool, the theme of Percy 's evolving leadership capabilities is brought to attention. In the preliminary events of the novel, Percy is clearly uncomfortable and uncertain of his newfound leadership position. But, as he and his friends, Annabeth and Grover, endure the trials that they encounter, Percy becomes increasingly a more effective and all around better leader. By applying the Hero Cycle, we can understand The Lightning Thief as a description of the evident evolution of Percy 's, leadership through the tests and challenges he endures.
When you think of hero you may think about the Marvel or DC universes. But Joseph Cambell made steps that people are following to become a hero. Percy Jackson in The Lightning theif follows the steps in the hero’s journey. The lightning theif aligns with the hero’s journey because There are many events in the Lightning theif that aligns with the Hero’s journey.
In the legend of Perseus to Percy Jackson Lightning Thief rendered new characters. First, Perseus had no allies, Percy Jackson had a few- Grover, Annabeth. Also, in the legend of Perseus Zeus was his father, but in Percy Jackson's case Poseidon was his father. Next, in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief the writers brought in other characters from different greek mythology like the lotus eaters, and Hades which was new as well and made it more interesting. Aa well speaking of Hades they added every god with their children, which are demi gods.
Percy Jackson, the main character in The Lightning Thief ,is following the path of the hero in “Hero’s journey” On Percy’s life a teacher has become his mentor. In the Lightning Thief Percy says “But Mr.Brunner expected me to be as good as everybody else, despite the fact that I have dyslexia and attention deficit disorder and I had never made above a C- in my life” In this quote, percy expresses his feelings on how he is frustrated with himself and his teacher. In hero's journey a quote shows about mentors, “Heroes are almost started on their journey by a character who has mastered the laws of the outside world and come back to bestow this wisdom upon them.” That is how The Lightning Thief is compared to hero's journey.
"The Sea of Monsters" by Rick Riordan is the second book in the "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" arrangement. In this book, Percy Jackson goes up against a mission to spare his dearest Camp Half Blood. Percy Jackson is seen nearing the finish of his seventh grade year and even though amped up for being finished with the school, and going to Camp Half Blood for the late spring, Percy is worried about a nightmare dream he has had in regards to his companion Grover. Percy doesn't know what the fantasy has implied but rather at last chooses he needs to concentrate on school. At the point when Percy touches base at school he and his companion, Tyson, are tormented by a gathering of new young men that have arrived.
Odysseus in the Odyssey fighting Polyphemus let many of his men die and got them trapped to die. He mainly focused on himself during the whole encounter and also at the end told the cyclops his name. while Percy Jackson he had a quick plan that he executed and worked. He also did not let any of his friends die from Polyphemus. That's one reason why he was the better leader.

In the book, The Lightning Thief, Percy Jackson shows great acts of perseverance. A coincidence is that Percy is short for the Greek hero Perseus. Perseus went out of the Underworld, killed the Hydra, and impressed his father. Percy Jackson is probably the most persevere character I've ever read about. He was persevere during his camp game of capture the flag.
Hercules and Theseus, two great heroes from mythology, seem to be similar in many ways. Both extremely brave and noble; with a love of danger and adventure mixed with compassion, creates the perfect heroes. Their stories intertwine with one another’s when Hercules has to save Theseus from the chair of forgetfulness in Hades. Theseus saved Hercules when he was distraught with intent to kill himself. In a similar way, they both stood by their friends no matter the cost.
Odysseus is cruel and quick to anger, arrogant, and does not truly win in the end. Along with the Hero’s journey, there is another journey that is not talked about. The villain’s journey is a parallel to the hero’s journey but usually ends the inverse of the Hero’s journey. Both hero and villain experience a call to adventure with guidance along the way.
Still however the characters are very alike in both their motivations. Odysseus and Percy Jackson define as being epic heroes because of their bravery, and the strength they find within themselves. Their reaction to their world define their different values and attitudes is they start to learn about them. They find what the gods like or dislike. The relationships with their mother and wife shaped them as the men they are because they helped motivate them to do the right thing and get back to their world.
All throughout history, occurrences of oppression and invasion have happened all around the world. The rights and freedom of innocent lives have been taken. The people with power have abused it and become tyrannical and self-centered. The innocent begin to rise against the malicious leaders trying to control their lives. Even through times of downfall and nonsuccess, humanity continues to fight back.
