Malcolm Gladwell and John Steinbeck are two amazing authors who's writing styles are unique and similar in many ways. Gladwell's bestseller, "The Tipping Point", teaches the reader how little things can make a big difference, while Steinbeck's bestseller, "The Pearl", teaches the reader that materialistic items are not the most important things in this world. In both, "The Tipping Point" and "The Pearl", Gladwell and Steinbeck are similar in their styles of writing by the way they can grab your attention on any given subject, the way their storylines are meaningful in many ways, and how they have the same moral for their readers to understand. "Why is it that some ideas or behaviors or products start epidemics and others don't? And what can we do to deliberately start and control positive epidemics of our own?" Steinbeck is more of a fictional story writer but can get the readers attention in a way that if different from any other writer which is amazing. The way he writes is that he makes up a story but puts some type of life lesson into it. Most writers do this as well but the way Steinbeck puts it is in a completely different way. In his book, "The Pearl", Steinbeck writes a fictional story on poor people and their daily lives. The main character finds a Pearl and that material item becomes his life. The way it grabs your attention is that some readers might relate this to their daily lives and how much they think that material items mean the most when they don't. The two writers also have bad writing styles in them. In Gladwell's book he stayed on one topic for several chapters which gets boring after awhile. Steinbeck made his main character's struggle with the Pearl last forever. "And, as with all retold tales that are in people's hearts, there are only good and bad things and black and white things and good and evil things and no in-between" ( The Pearl
It takes many other, intrinsic forms (that often happen by chance) for that individual to grasp the top of his field. Gladwell utilize a mix of research and anecdotes in order to precisely bring his point to his readers. His simple and straightforward style of writing propose that he and the reader are good buddies, tempting to pathos to help the reader relate to Gladwell and see his point of view. (Hauk, 2009) This mellow style of writing also appeals to a regular reader: it not only cause the book clear to discern, dissimilar to scholarly nonfiction books on the market, but also makes the reader more interested in the topic because he doesn’t have to toil through the entire academic vocabulary found in other nonfiction works.
Gladwell acts almost conceited in getting his concern across to his audience, the over confidence one receives as if he holds all the cards. As his audience trusts him since he gives out the evidence as if he is doing the audience a favor, he displays his thesis through an emotional lens. He uses the hopes and concerns of his audience to manipulate their to view success through his thesis. As we all hope success to be a result of our effort, Gladwell demonstrates how it is not our effort alone, our success is from a mixture of our background, time, and location. (Gladwell, 119)
Walter Cronkite, a famous American broadcast journalist, once said, “In seeking truth you have to get both sides of a story.” John Steinbeck, a famous American author, further proves this idea in his novel, East of Eden. The novel follows the lives of two very different families, the Hamiltons and the Trasks, in correlation to the history of the United States. Major ideas regarding the free will of an individual and predestined or chosen morals are continuously argued throughout the story. Critics, such as Peter Lisca in his article The Wide World of John Steinbeck, state that these contradictory messages along with a variety of other factors play into the “distracting” and “unintegrated” aspect of the members of the Hamilton family.
This in time influenced his type of writing to become more successful. Most of Steinbeck book dealt with friendships with men. He valued that kind of relationship. By 1933 Steinbeck had found his prose style that was more naturalistic and less

The author, John Steinbeck used this method often to allow his readers to notice these connections. In the novel Of Mice and Men and the short story Tularecito, Steinbeck uses similar plots, themes, topics, and symbolism to give readers an opportunity to notice and compare these cohesive writings. Both these pieces by John Steinbeck have many facets in the personality of their main character.

John Steinbeck: A Literary Light in the Great Depression " The ancient commission of the writer has not changed. He is charged with exposing our many grievous faults and failures, with dredging up to the light our dark and dangerous dreams for the purpose of improvement"(“John Ernst Steinbeck”). Said by John Steinbeck as he accepted the Nobel Prize for Literature, this quote illustrates perfectly the goals and ideals Steinbeck held himself to in his writing. Steinbeck pursued above all to give the common folk of the Great Depression a voice; an endeavor that grants him a place with the great writers of America.
After reading Of Mice and Men, I felt the need to research the author. After researching the author, I realized that he based this book off of his experiences. Steinbeck grew up in Salinas, California and that is where the book takes place. Due to John Steinbeck growing up and experiencing the Great Depression, I think his inspiration to write this book came from the social and economic issues that he had witnessed. He worked closely with migrants and itinerants and that deepened the empathy for workers as well as deepening his love for writing.
Harper Lee and Truman Capote first met in 1928. Neglected by his parents, Capote spent most of his childhood in Monroeville with his aunts, who were neighbors with the Lees. Despite their opposite personalities, the two became friends. Capote, a sensitive child who wore “fancy clothes” was picked on by other boys. Lee, on the other hand, was a tomboy that was “tougher than many of the boys” (“Harper Lee Biography”).
John Steinbeck has a style of writing unparalleled in history and in the modern world. In the same way, his philosophies are also unparalleled, with his focus in socialism not extending to communism or abnegation of spiritualism. His ideal world is utopian, holding the dust bowl migrant at the same level as the yeoman farmer was held in Jeffersonian times. In The Grapes of Wrath Steinbeck Steinbeck, who posses impregnable technique, conveys his message of a group working tirelessly for the betterment of the community.
The novellas Of Mice and Men and The Pearl are both often noted as social criticisms. The author, John Steinbeck addresses real-life issues that society is facing. Whether through direct statements and comments, or through a fictional characters’ situation, Steinbeck criticizes just some of the problems of society. He shows the way people are discriminated against, and why. He shows the issues society faces.
Through the many stories in Cannery Row involving Mack and the boys, Steinbeck is able to portray Mack and the boys in different ways. Depending on the story and the reader’s interpretation, Mack and the boys can be viewed as a lazy or troublesome group of men or misunderstood misfits with good intentions. One can argue that Mack and the boys’ actions throughout Cannery Row are actions of those who are troublesome. Specifically at the start of Cannery Row, when readers are introduced to Mack. He comes into Lee Chong’s grocery store, and suddenly Lee Chong “stiffened” (9).
Many themes in popular literature back then and today include a type of betrayal to others. In Sir Launcelot du Lake written by Sir Thomas Malory and The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights written by John Steinbeck, they both achieve remarkably similar feats. Sir Lancelot was portrayed numerous ways by these two authors . Lancelot was portrayed as not loyal, emotional and deceiving by the author John Steinbeck in The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights. On the other hand, Sir Launcelot du Lake by Sir Thomas Malory made Launcelot appear as honest, disrespectful, and trustworthy.
The pearl is a novella written by John Steinbeck and published in 1947. John Steinbeck was inspired by Mexican folk tale from La Paz where was full of pearl before, so he researched it and wrote this novella. Many people think that this novella is about human being’s greed and its tragic ending, but I intend to write how the protagonist Kino’s sense for nature was blinded and what factors have affected to modern people. Summary As I said previously, the story is based on Mexican folk tale, but the author created own characters and details.
