When you hear the word “Lincoln” what is the first thought to come to your mind? Many would say a symbolization of honesty, integrity, freedom and even humanity. From 1861-1865 America was blessed with one of the greatest presidents we have ever had the 16th president of the United States of America, Abraham Lincoln. At the time of his presidency the country was divided into two regions the north and south regions in which they both had withdrawn from the union. Lincoln led the United States to defeat the confederacy which followed the famous Emancipation Proclamation, which was put in place to abolish slavery.

In many ways, Jefferson Davis and Abraham Lincoln compared and contrasted amongst many ideals, the most decisive being the issue of slavery. Lincoln would compare with Davis over the defense of slavery and the inferiority of African-Americans . Regardless, the two presidents would differ amongst slave rights (liberty) and expansion of the institution. While this party was established there were only four presidents who made office during this time and they were Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, and Quincy Adams. What the Democrats-Republicans job was to go against the Federalist Party when elections came around. After the war in 1812 the Federalist Party lost most of its supporters and ended up disbanding.

The country was in shambles and needed a plan to heal, so under Abraham Lincoln he began to do just that. He gave the hope of peace and prosperity to the entire nation, under which it would slowly rebuild. Though the Radical Republicans had to take over this project it clearly became a bright spot in American history for the changes made to help freedmen. Throughout the country the Lincoln’s idea of reconstruction had been signal of hope for many of its people, but because of his assassination the hope steadily diminished.

Through the eyes of Hofstader, Abraham Lincoln was a man who was inconsistent with his beliefs not only as a president but a politician as well. Abraham Lincoln would lead the Republican Party even though he did not win the south over in the election. He promised that he would save the Union no matter what the cost. This disconnect in policy would later lay the basis for the Civil War, which started in 1861. He never envisioned a proclamation or ending slavery but he was ultimately committed to saving the Union from the succeeding south. Lincoln gave into the antislavery Republicans toward the end of the war and finally decided to make slavery the true basis of the war.
